Mountain West Game of
the Week
Wyoming 34
... Ohio 33
Down 30-20 in the fourth quarter after a
Jameson Hartke interception return for a
touchdown, Wyoming got a four-yard Wynel
Seldon touchdown run and answered a
field goal with a five-yard Michael Ford
touchdown catch with just over two
minutes to play. Ohio's final drive
never got going, and UW had held. The
Bobcats got four Michael Braunstein
field goals and a 94-yard kickoff return
from Chris Garrett to make up for an
offense that was held to 37 rushing
yards. The Wyoming offense rolled for
441 yards and got two Karsten Sween
touchdown passes along with two second
half touchdown runs from Devin Moore,
but turned the ball over seven times.
Mountain
West
Player of
the Week
UNLV RB Frank
Summers ran 29 times for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a pass for a
29-yard score in the 27-0 win over Utah.
Conference Roundup
Air
Force
…
For the first time all year, the Air Force offense
struggled to get something going. This isn't an offense
built on making big comebacks, and with the
ineffectiveness of the passing game against BYU, the
running game needed to crank out long drives to take
time off the clock, and couldn't. Three of 13 third down
conversions, 22:50 time of possession and 133 rushing
yards aren't going to cut it against the better teams on
the schedule. To change that up against Navy next week,
someone has to get the hot hand running the ball.
BYU … After the way the BYU defense was
obliterated by Tulsa, a blowout was much needed. Getting
it in the Mountain West opener was even sweeter, as the
Cougar D stuffed the Air Force offense all game long,
while the offense was balanced and effective. Max Hall
had a nice game to keep the ball moving, but it was the
defense that starred, especially on third downs. Air
Force only had the ball for 22:50, and wore down. This
game didn't establish BYU as the class of the Mountain
West, but it was a good step forward.
Colorado State … It should've been set up so
perfectly for CSU against Houston. It got up early,
could run Kyle Bell, and get out with the win, but Bell
next got going, QB Caleb Hanie struggled in the second
half, and now the record is 0-3 with a date at TCU
ahead. That's three straight games the Rams have had a
shot to win, and three straight times it couldn't close.
All the parts aren't coming together, and at the moment,
the biggest problem is an offensive line that's not
being physical enough. Bell isn't getting any room to
move.
New Mexico… Does New Mexico feel better about
itself now? Coming off the big win over Arizona, the
Lobos had the layup against Sacramento State, and they
took full advantage of the situation by getting all the
parts working, and getting the backups some good time in
the fourth quarter. The offensive line dominated, and
now it needs to continue the momentum into the big game
with BYU. If the offense is as balanced as it was this
week, the Lobos could actually pull off the win and
become a major factor in the Mountain West title race.
San Diego State … Finally, after not getting much
pop in the first two weeks, Kevin O'Connell and the
passing game broke out in the win over Portland State.
Brett Swain had the kind of massive game everyone was
expecting of him as a number one target, and now he'll
be the main focus of Cincinnati. O'Connell will have to
be just as sharp next week against Cincinnati, and the
offense even more explosive with the Aztec defense not
showing much in the way of pass defense, allowing 445
yards.
TCU … Now the offense is looking for any sort of
a spark. To only come up with 250 yards against a woeful
SMU defense shows how bad things are, and to do it with
Aaron Brown back at tailback, albeit at less than 100%,
is a real problem. Rotating quarterbacks was inevitable.
Marcus Jackson has to do something to give the team a
spark, but until then, the defense will have to continue
to carry things.
UNLV … It might not have been the prettiest
offensive performance against Utah, but the running of
Frank Summers got the job done, while the defense played
a whale of a game in the shutout. LB Beau Bell cleaned
up everything against the run, and Mil'von James broke
up almost every pass that came his way as the defense
showed that the good performance against Wisconsin a few
weeks ago wasn't a fluke. The passing of Travis Dixon
wasn't there, but with the way Summers ran made up for
it. Yes, UNLV is in first place in the Mountain West.
Utah … Not even the hurried return of Brian
Johnson could save the Utah offense against UNLV. Tommy
Grady couldn't build on the good game against UCLA, and
even with Darrell Mack running well, and Johnson
throwing relatively well when he entered in the second
half, the Utes couldn't overcome a slew of mistakes and
misfires. The offense simply isn't working right now,
and if things don't pick up against Utah State next
week, they never will. The O has to do a far, far better
job of keeping the chains moving.
Wyoming … It's safe to say Wyoming isn't going to
win a whole bunch of games when it turns it over seven
times, with five interceptions, and gets sacked four
times. Throw in seven penalties for 102 yards in the win
over Ohio, and the Cowboys came up with as sloppy a game
as it could crank out and still win. Give credit to the
Cowboy defense for coming up with stop after stop, led
by six sacks, to win. The team will have to be much,
much sharper, with a far more effective game from QB
Karsten Sween, to get by TCU.
