WAC Game of the Week
Boise State 69 ... Nevada 67 4OT
In the highest scoring game in recent D-I college football history (going back to 1930 when the official records starting being kept), Boise State won in the fourth overtime on a defensive play, Nevada tried for a two point conversion after a seven-yard Luke Lippencott touchdown run, but QB Colin Kaepernick was tripped up. Boise State forced overtime with a 27-yard Kyle Brotzman field goal as time ran out, and that's when the fun began. Lippencott ran for a 25-yard score, and then Boise answered witha 25-yard Sherm Blaser catch on its first play. Jeremy Childs gave the Broncos the lead on a 25-yard Jeremy Childs score on the next play, and then the Pack answered with a weaving Kaepernick 25-yard touchdown run. The two teams traded field goals in the third OT, and then Boise took the lead for good on a one-yard Ian Johnson run and a Jeremy Avery catch on the two point conversion. The statistics are ridiculous. 1,266 total yards of offense, 58 first downs.21 of 34 on third down conversions. Nevada averaged 7.6 yards per carry and 22.1 yards per completion, while Boise State cranked out 353 passing yards.

WAC Player of the Week
Boise State RB Ian Johnson ran 28 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns, and caught four passes for 51 yards and a scorea.

Conference Roundup

Boise State … Boise State can breathe a sigh of relief after beating Nevada in one of the wildest games ever, and now the coaching staff can go to work trying to revamp the defense after it couldn't tackle the Luke Lippincott or Colin Kaepernick. Taylor Tharp had a third straight great game to take the pressure off of Ian Johnson, while the offense came through with every play needed to pull it off. Now it's time to hit the road with three away games in the next four, including the showdown with Fresno State.
Fresno State … The run defense struggled against Idaho, but it didn't matter. Ryan Mathews, Lonyae Miller, and the FSU running game were way too much for the Vandals to deal with, but the real key was the play of QB Tom Brandstater. He wasn't anything special, but he completed 17 of 22 passes and didn't make any mistakes, while the Idaho passing game couldn't consistently move the ball. Very quietly, the Bulldogs are looking like real WAC contenders.
Hawaii … Hawaii might not have come up with the performance it wanted on national TV against San Jose State, but the team showed great heart in being able to comeback in the clutch on a muddy field. Even though Colt Brennan didn't go lights out, he showed Heisman-worth with his play in the final five minute and in overtime, and along the way, set the D-I record for the most career touchdown passes. Any time you beat Ty Detmer for an all-time record, you're doing something amazing.
Idaho … Deonte Jackson and the Vandal ground game ran extremely well against Fresno State, but the inefficiency from QB Brian Nooy, who only completed nine of 22 passes, proved to be a killer. He couldn't bomb his way back into the game after the Bulldogs got up to a big lead, and had to rely on the ground game just to get any yards. It's about getting better every week for the Vandals, and right now, it's about finding some offensive balance to help out Jackson.
Louisiana Tech … On two late drives, Tech might have turned its season around with the touchdowns and the win over New Mexico State. For most of the game, the offense didn't do much of anything, needing to settle for field goals, but the defense kept the high-powered Aggies from pulling away too far. This was a key home win before dealing with Boise State, but things up a bit ahead, even though the Bulldogs have to go on the road to play Utah State and Idaho.
Nevada … The Wolf Pack needed the win over Boise State to have any hope of winning a WAC title, and now, after the painful four overtime loss, the team is playing for a possible bowl slot. As tough as it might have been to lose this game, the emergence of Colin Kaepernick as a playmaking quarterback might change the team. He didn't throw well, but he ran like Vince Young, while the O line did a phenomenal job opening holes for Luke Lippencott. Now it's on to Utah State, Idaho and New Mexico State for what has to be a three-game winning streak before facing Hawaii.
New Mexico State … J.J. McDermott wasn't Chase Holbrook against Louisiana Tech, but he wasn't bad. He didn't make a slew of mistakes, and he put the team in a position to win, but the defense that played so well for about 53 minutes collapsed at the end. The Aggies lost last week in a blowout, and lost this week in a heartbreaker, and now they need to beat Idaho to turn things back around before dealing with a trip to Hawaii.
San Jose State … The Spartans did a good job of keeping up the apace in a firefight with Hawaii, but once the momentum shifted late, it didn't appear as if the offense had any answered. Once again, there wasn't much of a running game, with Adam Tafralis taking over the game early on with his arm, while Dwight Lowery cemented a spot on the All-WAC team with a strong game, even if the Warrior passing attack went nuts. The team has to quickly get over this loss with road games at Fresno State and Boise State ahead.
