Mountain West Game of
the Week
Colorado State 42 ... Georgia Southern
34
Gartrell Johnson opened up the scoring three times in the
first half, and Luke Roberts caught a 21-yard touchdown pass, as the Rams got up
28-3 and the rout appeared to be on. Georgia Southern made it very interesting
thanks to QB Jayson Foster, who ran for scores from 33, 12 and 19 yards out,
while Lamar Lewis sparked a run of 17 unanswered points with a 19-yard dash.
After Jesse Hartley's second 35-yad field goal of the game, the Rams recovered
the onsides kick and ran out the clock.

Conference Roundup
Air
Force
… Is
there a hotter running game in America right now? All
the parts were working against San Diego State with a
devastating mix of speed and power from all the weapons.
Three Falcons went over 100 yards allowing Shaun Carney
to continue to relax and take the throws that are there
rather than forcing anything big. With the win, Troy
Calhoun got his program to the number two spot in the
Mountain West. That's not bad for a first season.
BYU … Wyoming, even when it's struggling, it
tough at home, and BYU went into Laramie and won without
breathing hard. The run defense has stepped its play up
a few notches over the last few weeks, and now it gets
its biggest test in weeks needing to deal with a hot
Utah ground game. The win clinched at least a share of
the Mountain West title with the potential to win it
outright against either Utah or San Diego State. With
the offense operating effectively, and Max Hall quietly
cranking out big game after big game, getting one more
win won't be a problem.
Colorado State … Colorado State sure likes to
make things interesting as Georgia Southern tore off 349
rushing yards to almost pull off the upset. Caleb Hanie
had his second straight strong performance throwing the
ball, but it helps when Gartrell Johnson and the running
game can carry the attack for stretches. Now a brutally
ugly year has the potential to end on a big high note
with a win over Wyoming giving the Rams a two-game
winning streak going into the off-season.
New Mexico… The schizophrenic season continues
for the Lobos playing well off and on and not being
consistent from one week to the next. Rodney Ferguson
and the running game has to work to beat teams like
Utah, and there can't be the turnovers to kill drives
like there were this week. Donovan Porterie has to be
more efficient and needs to handle a pass rush a little
better at this point in the season. This is a far better
team than UNLV, but the playing field will be evened
next week if the mistakes continue.
San Diego State … The run defense is simply
non-existent at the moment, at least against spread
attacks. The Aztec offense was fine against Air Force,
but Kevin O'Connell and the boys didn't have a prayer
with the way the defense was getting gouged time and
again. With two other heavyweights, TCU and BYU, still
to play, it'll be vital to generate a few key stops
early to stay in the game for a few quarters. O'Connell
has been great, but he'll have to be flawless and more
is needed from the running backs.
TCU … The defense is humming. It might not have
been great against BYU, but it completely shut down UNLV
and New Mexico over the last three weeks, while the
offense is doing just enough to get by. Chase Ortiz had
a huge game against the Rebels, and safety Stephen Hodge
managed to stuff the running game all day long. For all
the disappointments this season, a win over San Diego
State to close out, for three wins in four weeks leading
to a bowl game, would be a nice turnaround.
UNLV … It's late November. There's no reason the
UNLV offense, at this point in the year, should only be
gaining 12 rushing yards. TCU's defense might be great,
but the spread should dictate the action, not the other
way around. Travis Dixon failed to stretch things out
with the passing game, while the offensive line never
got a push. With seven straight losses, this has been
another disastrous season with a trip to New Mexico to
close things out. There needs to be some hope for next
year coming out of the trip to Albuquerque.
Utah … The momentum continues as the Utes win
their seventh straight be taking advantage of New Mexico
screw ups and getting just enough offense to get by.
Brian Johnson continues to take a bit of a backseat role
in the offense as he's letting the running game and
defense win games, but to beat BYU, he's going to have
to air it out a bit more and he'll have to be better on
third downs than he was this week.
Wyoming … What happened to the offense? The
defense has struggled to come up with any sort of
meaningful stop lately, but the offense has gone MIA for
the entire Mountain West season. This was supposed to be
a balanced attack with Karsten Sween growing into a
playmaker of a passer, but it hasn't happened, and now
things have gone from bad to worse getting just one
touchdown in the last two games. Even so, a 6-6 season
is still possible with a win over Colorado State. All
things considered in this disastrous collapse, that
wouldn't be that bad a final result.
