Air Force | BYU | Colorado State | New Mexico
San Diego State | TCU | UNLV | Utah | Wyoming

Mountain West Game of the Week
BYU 17 ... Utah 10
Down 10-9, BYU needed a 49-yard catch by Austin Collie on fourth-and-18, a few pass interference calls and a personal foul, and an 11-yard touchdown run from Harvey Unga with 38 seconds to play to break Utah's heart for a second straight season. Utah had taken the lead with 1:34 to play on a one-yard Darrell Mack run and got a 35-yard Louie Sakoda field goal in the third quarter, but couldn't move the ball on a last gasp drive. Mitch Payne nailed three field goals for the Cougars before their final drive.

Mountain West Player of the Week
TCU RB Joseph Turner ran 33 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns in the win over San Diego State

Conference Roundup

Air Force … Didn’t Play This Week
BYU … BYU moved the ball well against Utah and the defense did a great job, but it struggled to close on three key drives forcing the miraculous final march to yet another tough win in the rivalry. Max Hall struggled way too much, as he didn't appear to always be on quite the same page with his receivers, but he was great when he had to be. All Cougar and Ute fans will remember is the fourth and 18 throw to Austin Collie to keep the game alive. Now with a second straight Mountain West title in hand, a second straight 11-win season is possible.
Colorado State … An awful season finishes up with a high note by rallying to beat Wyoming with the type of performance the team was hoping to get throughout the year. Caleb Hanie had an efficient passing day, the running game rumbled with Gartrell Johnson, with Michael Myers doing a great job in relief, and the defensive coming through with three late stops. If nothing else, the Rams were competitive over the final month even when they had nothing to play for.
New Mexico… Against UNLV, the Lobos didn't do anything special offensively and made a slew of mistakes, but the defense pitched a near perfect game making it a blowout over the final 40 minutes. Now it's a case of watching and waiting for a possible bowl bid. At 8-4, the Lobos certainly have a strong enough record to find its way into a 13th game, but it can't go to the New Mexico Bowl after playing in it last year, and it has to hope some other openings could be there with six wins teams certain to be nervous about being bounced out.
San Diego State … Kevin O'Connell was once again a one man gang able keep the Aztecs alive against TCU, but the run defense proved to be the downfall yet again. Getting help from someone in the backfield is a must as there's almost no running game outside of O'Connell, and while that's partly due to getting down so early, it'll be important to try to establish a running attack early against BYU. The Cougars don't have anything to play for, and SDSU has to take advantage of that right away.
TCU … It's good to know the offense can bomb away if it has to. The Horned Frogs might not have had the season they wanted, and the defense wasn't as dominant as it was supposed to be, but considering the problems over the first half of the year, finishing with three wins in the final four games isn't bad. Unearthing Joseph Turner running the ball was the real find as the big sophomore ripped apart San Diego State. Now if he can be a consistent threat, and the rest of the parts can continue to produce, there might be reason to get excited about a bounceback 2008. The bowl game should be an interesting indicator.
UNLV … The offense simply didn't improve a lick over the second half of the season. The offensive line's struggles led to a lousy game against New Mexico, and not enough of a passing threat allowed the Lobo D to load up against the run. The key to the offseason will be getting the quarterback situation settled. Someone has to step up and be consistent of 2008 won't be any better. LB Beau Bell is a terror. He put on a highlight reel for the NFL scouts against the Lobos.
Utah  … How much more can Utah fans take after the last two games against BYU? An all-timer of a final Cougar drive meant a second straight brutal loss made happen on an all-timer of a pass play, but the offensive ineffectiveness had something to do with that. Only 244 yards of total offense with two interceptions and ten penalties allowed the Cougars to stay in the game. Brian Johnson never got the passing game going and Darrell Mack was held in check. Even so, after the start of the season, 8-4 isn't bad.
Wyoming … Considering the start to the season, is there a more disappointing team over the final month? Losing to Utah and BYU is one thing, but blowing chances to become bowl eligible in losses to San Diego State and Colorado State is unacceptable. From penalties to brutal inefficiency on third downs, the Cowboys blew it against the Rams to close out the year with a four-game losing streak. This is a better team than it showed over the final month.
