Pac 10 Game of the Week
Arizona State 24 ... UCLA 20
Arizona State overcame an early 10-0 deficit and a late 89-yard kickoff return for a score from Matt Slater to hold on for the win. Rudy Carpenter connected with Kyle Williams for a nine-yard score, Dimitri Nance ran for an 11-yard touchdown, and Keegan Herring put the Sun Devils up for good with a 71-yard run midway through the third quarter. After a Thomas Weber punt pinned the Bruins deep with time for one last gasp try, a several lateral play helped get the ball past midfield, but the desperation play sputtered out and ASU pulled it out.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
USC RB Chauncey Washington ran 29 times for 220 yards and a touchdown in the win over Cal

Conference Roundup

Arizona … ASU needs to be much, much sharper against USC and Arizona to finish 11-1 and be in the Rose Bowl. Against UCLA, Rudy Carpenter got hit way too often, the running game was inconsistent and it took way too long to put a punchless team way. Carpenter won't be able to get away with a 16 of 31-day against the Bruins, but he needs help from an offensive line that's had a nightmare of a time in pass protection over the last few weeks. UCLA's six sacks kept the game close.

UCLA's six sacks kept the game close.
California … The rain can't be blamed for the three turnovers against USC, especially the two picks thrown by Nate Longshore. Cal ran extremely well, but couldn't handle the Trojan running game and offensive line. There was little pressure on John David Booty, few plays at the point of attack, and not enough game-changing moments on defense. Now the Bears have lost four of five, has seen their season crash and burn, and now needs to beat Washington and Stanford to get back up in the pecking order. Step one to turning things around is to get the receivers more involved. Justin Forsett running is nice, but DeSean Jackson has to get going.
Oregon … Didn’t Play This Week
Oregon State … Oregon State might be bowl eligible, but it had to claw its way against Washington to get there. The good news was Alexis Serna was on, hitting all five of his field goal attempts. The bad news was that Serna had five field goal attempts. OSU could've closed out Washington early on, but couldn't punch it in on several drives and had to settle for three. To win on the road at Washington State next week and to have a shot against Oregon, the Beavers will have to take advantage of every opportunity.
Stanford … The Cardinal isn't getting enough consistency on offense, and isn't getting the one big play needed on defense, to turn games around. The offense moved relatively well on Washington State, but this isn't a high-octane offense that can get into shootouts. Mark Bradford was tremendous in a losing caught, catching 12 passes for 141 yards, and proved once again that he's a playmaker who needs the ball thrown his way more often. Now things get really interesting with Notre Dame up in two weeks before the Cal showdown.
UCLA … UCLA isn't giving up without a fight. Karl Dorrell is under intense pressure, but to be fair, he doesn't have a real quarterback to work with and his top rushing options are out. Even so, his Bruins battled hard in the loss to Arizona State, mainly because the defense kept the game alive. Outside of allowing a big third quarter touchdown run, the D did a solid overall job. Now it'll have to generate even more pressure and create more big plays to have a shot at Oregon next week. With Osaar Rasshan under center, there simply isn't enough firepower to keep up with the Ducks.
USC  … For all the problems and all the issues, USC is still 8-2 with a chance for an at-large BCS bid still alive. The Pac 10 title dream is still there if Oregon crashes and burns, but first, the Trojans have to take the next two weeks to work on Arizona State for a nasty road game coming off the tough week at Cal. Chauncey Washington took his turn as the star of the running game, establishing himself worthy of getting more work. The defense struggled in the rain at Berkeley, but that's not going to be a problem in Tempe.
Washington … Fortunately, Jake Locker appears to be fine after suffering a scary hit against Oregon State. Now it's up to Carl Bonnell to get the offense moving, and while he did a good job coming up with big yards against the Beavers, he struggled to keep the chains moving. Louis Rankin and the running game need to contribute more, and more big plays from the defense would be a big help to bust out of an ugly season. With home games against Cal and Washington State up next, this is a vital two-week stretch in the Ty Willingham era. He should be safe with a young team that's expected to come back strong next year, but his team needs to show a sign of life.
Washington State … Alex Brink bombed the Cougars back into bowl contention with the win over Stanford, but again, way too many drives ended with field goals instead of touchdowns. As good as Brink was, he struggled to get the offense to come up with the one big play needed here and there to make the game a laugher. Now Wazzu needs to keep the offensive production rolling against Oregon State to make the Apple Cup a battle for a 13th game.
