SEC Game of the Week
LSU 28 ... Florida 24
In one of the year's most thrilling games, LSU chose to go for it on fourth down deep in Florida territory, rather than kick the field goal that would've tied it, got it, and finished off the drive with a two-yard Jacob Hester touchdown run with just over a minute to play. Tim Tebow's last gasp Hail Mary was batted down in the end zone. Florida jumped out to a 10-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal and a two-yard touchdown catch from Kestahn Moore, and took a 17-7 lead into halftime on a one-yard Tebow run. LSU dominated the second half, controlling things on the ground, with Keiland Williams scoring from four yards out and Demetrius Byrd catching a four-yard scoring pass, but a 37-yard Cornelius Ingram scoring play helped Florida stay ahead until the final moments.

SEC Player of the Week
LSU S Craig Steltz made 16 tackles, and Florida DE/LB Jermaine Cunningham made 17 tackles and broke up two passes in LSU's 28-24 win.

Conference Roundup

Alabama … Talk about sweating it out. Alabama will get hollered at all week long for almost blowing a late lead and needing a last second interception to get past Houston. Glen Coffee did a terrific job of carrying the offense, but the defense gave up too many big plays and couldn't get a stop late until the final interception. Now it's back to the SEC play, needing to be far more consistent in all phases of the offense to build up to the LSU showdown in early November.
Arkansas … Arkansas struggled a little too much with Chattanooga, but the running game did what it had to do, cranking out 257 yards and three scores. This should've been a game to work on the passing game, but Casey Dick only completed 13 of 22 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown with an interception. At least UTC's passing was worse, completing four of 22 passes. This was a game for Felix Jones. Darren McFadden was fine, but Jones took over and effectively ended the game. Now the intensity has to crank up against for Auburn.
Auburn … So much for a letdown after beating Florida. Even in the overall struggles in the losses, the defense was never that bad, and now it's dominating against the run. Vandy had no chance to move the ball, and struggled to get things moving on third downs. Offensively, the addition of Brad Lester was a nice boost to the depth and running back rotation, but the biggest help in the turnaround has been the play of Brandon Cox, who has settled down, isn't forcing his passes, and isn't making mistakes. He'll have to be even sharper at Arkansas and LSU over the next two weeks.
Florida … What happened to the Florida run defense? In the second half, the Gators couldn't get LSU off the field, but were still in the game until the end. It took LSU converting all five first down chances, and it took several gut-check calls to pull it off. Florida played well in the first half, found ways to get points on the board, played tough defense early, and did a great job in a hostile setting, but this was a game about the defensive line. It did its best, but couldn't get the one big stop despite having several chances.
Georgia … Call the Tennessee loss a learning experience for a big step forward. Eventually. The Vols got on an early roll, Georgia couldn't answer, and all of a sudden it was 28-0. Matthew Stafford couldn't bomb his way back into it, and the running game failed, coming off an amazing performance against Ole Miss. Now the Dawgs have to gear it back up again, avoid losing to Vanderbilt for a second year in a row, and then take the time off for Florida. This is still a dangerous team that might still get its shot to win the East, but it can't afford a mistake the rest of the way.
Kentucky … The UK offense went on some excellent drives against South Carolina, but the four turnovers, and the two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, were too much to overcome. The Gamecocks allowed Woodson to hit almost everything short, but they didn't let him push the ball deep often enough. Basically, Woodson took what was given to him, and even though the offense fought back late, it wasn't enough. The defense failed to get USC offense off the field late, and now UK faces the daunting task of facing LSU and Florida in an attempt to avoid falling out of the SEC race.
LSU
… LSU was already in a driver's seat to get to the national title game, and now it has cemented its spot as the number one team in the nation with a tough, gutty win over Florida. The passing game wasn't really working, and the defense didn't dominate, but the offensive line came through when it had to, and Jacob Hester did a fantastic job of getting the hard yards. Holding on to the ball for 12:09 in the fourth quarter, and close to 22 minutes of the second half, helped keep the defense off the field. That's what great power teams do, and that's what teams who aren't afraid of going for it on fourth down in key situations can come up with.
Ole Miss … 232 yards of total offense?! Against LSU or Florida, fine, but Louisiana Tech? The offensive line didn't do anything to get BenJarvus Green--Ellis room to move, while Seth Adams and hit three interceptions almost proved costly, except for the play of the defense to save the day. The Rebels simply aren't good enough to have a letdown, but it won, and now it can focus on Alabama.
Miss State … The offense was hardly a machine against UAB, gaining just 284 yards and getting nothing from the passing game. Wesley Carroll isn't going to bomb away, with the gameplan being Anthony Dixon, Anthony Dixon, Anthony Dixon, and then hoping from key plays from the defense. UAB wasn't going to do much on the Bulldogs, so the O didn't take any chances. Against Tennessee next week, the offense will have to do far, far more.
South Carolina … Against Kentucky, the offensive line got Chris Smelley hit time and again, and the running game only managed 86 net yards, but those were the only big issues. The defense did a great job of swarming over the Wildcat receivers, not allowing QB Andre Woodson to find anything deep. He was able to dink and dunk, but USC was able to keep the yards after catch to a minimum. Smelley, even under pressure, was excellent, keeping the chains moving on four excellent scoring drives, but the real story was a defense that kept the high-powered Cats under wraps. With North Carolina and Vandy ahead, being 7-1 is a must.
Tennessee … Where has this Tennessee team been all season long? It ripped apart Georgia with the speed, efficiency, and execution everyone was waiting to see against California and Florida. Instead of the game being put on Erik Ainge's shoulders, there was balance and creativity to the playcalling, keeping the Dawgs on their heels throughout the first half. Now, despite a 3-2 start, the Vols are with South Carolina as the lead dogs in the East race. The Gamecocks come to Knoxville on October 27th.
Vanderbilt … Vandy has to win all the games they're supposed to if it wants to stay in the bowl hunt, and Auburn wasn't one of those games. However, there has to be more against the better teams at this point. The offense didn't do anything in the passing game, and the defense didn't have a prayer against a Tiger ground game that ripped off yards in chunks. Auburn was able to get a big-yard play when it wanted to, and Vanderbilt didn't. Completing 12 of 31 passes won't work against anyone in the SEC.
