Navy 74 ... North Texas 62
In one of the wildest games in college football history, the two
teams set a D-I record with 136 points with 1,315 yards of total
offense. North Texas QB Giovanni Vizza threw eight touchdown
passes including five to Casey Fitzgerald from nine, nine, 24,
29 and 17 yards out and a 75-yarder to Sam Dibrell, but Navy was
able to roll up 572 yards of rushing offense to keep up. Down
49-31, Navy scored 27 straight points to take control of the
game helped by a 21-yard Reggie Campbell touchdown run and a
66-yard Zerbin Singleton dash, but it wasn't until Reggie
Campbell took a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown did the
Midshipmen finally take control. Navy averaged ten yards per
carry.

Player of the Week
In a losing cause against Navy, North Texas QB Giovanni Vizza
completed 40 of 50 passes for 478 yards and eight touchdowns
with two interceptions, and ran 13 times for 93 yards.

Arkansas State
… ASU got Corey Leonard back to handle
the offense against Florida Atlantic,
and while the offense was balanced,
there wasn't enough of it. The Indians
were able to take advantage of three
turnovers and make up for the
inconsistent attack early, but when they
needed a big drive late, Leonard
couldn't keep the chains moving. Even a
disappointing season, a 6-6 record is
still possible with a winnable game
against North Texas next, and a battle
with another disappointment, Southern
Miss, to close out the year.
FIU … Didn’t Play This Week
Florida Atlantic … The Owls kept
the Sun Belt title hopes alive with the
thrilling win over Arkansas State, and
not it just needs to get by FIU before
it can deal with Troy. First, they have
to play Florida in Gainesville, and
while it's an obvious mismatch, if Rusty
Smith can start bombing early on the
suspect Gator secondary, things could
get interesting. Smith had to take on
the offense with the running game
struggling yet again, but still FAU is
two Sun Belt wins away from going to New
Orleans.
Middle Tennessee … With
everything to play for, needing to get
by UL Lafayette on Senior Day to set up
a showdown for the Sun Belt title
against Troy, the defense couldn't stop
a running game for the second week in a
row, the offense couldn't come up with
the same magic from Joe Craddock or
Dwight Dasher, and now the bowl dreams
are gone. The offense wasn't bad, but
the passing game didn't work and the
defense didn't come through in the
second half.
North Texas … UNT has gotten
involved in two major shootouts this
year, once with SMU and now with Navy,
and lost them both because the defense
wasn't remotely close to coming through
with a clutch stop. Even so, cranking
out eight touchdown passes from
Gionvanni Vizza shows that the offense
is certainly headed in the right
direction, and eventually, the defense
will catch up enough to start winning.
Vizza is definitely one to build around.
Troy … The Trojans didn't need
the game against Western Kentucky, but
it kept the momentum going with its
seventh win in eight games. Omar
Haugabook had one of his worst games of
the year, and the run defense struggled,
but coming off the loss to Georgia, and
with the showdowns with Middle Tennessee
and Florida Atlantic ahead, the team can
be forgiven if the intensity wasn't
there. One win in the final two games
assures at least a tie for the Sun Belt
title.
UL Lafayette … The running game
controlled Middle Tennessee after
getting down early, with the team not
panicking after things didn't go
perfectly right away. Michael Desormeaux
was the main man keying the offense with
more than just his legs, keeping the
offense moving over the final three
quarters with efficient passing. Even
with 11 penalties and three turnovers,
the team played well enough to pull off
a stunner, and now can close out with a
big run with games against FIU and UL
Monroe ahead.
UL Monroe … After a brutally
painful loss to Middle Tennessee, the
WarHawks got back on track with a
stifling effort against Grambling State.
Calvin Dawson and Frank Goodin ran well
the defense never let the Tigers breath,
and ULM got a much-needed win before
going on the road to face Alabama and UL
Lafayette. To have any shot of keeping
it close against the Tide, there can't
be 11 penalties and four turnovers like
there were this week. The 30,101 fans
set a new school record.
