Best Terrapin
Bowl Moment:
In what is still the biggest win in Maryland history, the Terps
shocked No. 1 and regular season national champ Tennessee in the
1952 Sugar Bowl. The upset, led by Ed Modzelewski’s 153 yards
rushing and Ed Fullerton’s two scores, one on offense and one on
defense, sealed the only perfect season in Maryland history.
Best Beaver Bowl Moment: Oregon State has been to three Rose
Bowls over the last 60 years, but even those trips to Pasadena paled
in comparison to the 2001 Fiesta Bowl. Pac-10 laughingstocks no
more, the Beavers rode a 29-point third quarter outburst to
embarrass No. 10 Notre Dame, 41-9. Few victories in school history
carried more clout for the OSU program.
Oregon State's best win ...
Oregon State 31 ... California 28
Down ten in the final minutes, the Bears came up with a
thriller of an ending as Lavelle Hawkins took a Kevin Riley pass 64 yards for a
touchdown to pull within three, and after the D held, they got the ball on their
own six with 1:27 to play. Riley almost got sacked for a safety, and almost got
stopped several other times on the drive, but he got the ball deep into OSU
territory helped by a 37-yard pass to Robert Jordan and a pass interference call
to get it down to the 12. But with no timeouts left, Riley tried to run, got
stopped at the eight, and time ran out. It was a see-saw game for the first 50
minutes, highlighted by a ten-yard Hawkins touchdown catch, and for Oregon
State, field goals from 22, 52 and 33 yards out and two one-yard Yvenson Bernard
touchdown runs.

Oregon State's worst loss ...
UCLA 40 ... Oregon State 14
Oregon State appeared to be on its way to an easy win, taking
a 14-0 first quarter lead on an Al Afalavia 33-yard fumble return
for a score, and a one-yard Yvenson Bernard touchdown run. The then
came the self-destruction. UCLA managed two Kai Forbath field goals
in the second quarter, and took advantage of two fumbled kickoff
returns from Gerard Lawson to get two short Kahlil Bell scoring
runs. Brandon Breazell scored from 69 and 30 yards out, with the
first score coming after a personal foul call, and Chris Markey ran
it in from two yards away as part of a 28-0 fourth quarter Bruin

quarter, along with a 23-yarder, and Hakeem Nicks caught a 30-yard
touchdown pass as North Carolina shocked Maryland. The Terps
struggled offensively all game long, but rallied from a 16-3 deficit
to get a five-yard Keon Lattimore touchdown run and a 29-yard Obi

Florida State 44 ... UCLA 27
Florida State broke open a close game with 21 second half
points with a 30-yard jump ball to Greg Carr for a touchdown, a three-yard
Lorenzo Booker dash, and closed out with an 86-yard interception return for a
score from Tony Carter. UCLA cranked out 434 yards of total offense while
seemingly having control of the game with a 78-yard touchdown catch from Brandon
Breazell on a perfect strike from Patrick Cowan, and a seven-yard scoring pass
to Junior Taylor while Florida State could only manage field goals for a long
stretch with Gary Cismesia connecting from 39, 21 and 36. Down 20-16 midway
through the third quarter, FSU's Lawrence Timmons took a blocked punt 25 yards
for a touchdown after UCLA got flagged for a penalty following a successful
