Pac 10 Game of the Week

UCLA 27 ... Tennessee 24 OT
A wild finish ended when Tennessee PK Daniel Lincoln missed a 34-yard field goal in overtime after UCLA's Kai Forbath nailed a 42-yards on the Bruins' possession. Both offenses struggled through most of the game with UCLA getting its first touchdown on a blocked punt for a touchdown from Sean Westgate, while Tennessee picked off Kevin Craft four times with Nevin McKenzie returning a pick 61 yards for a touchdown with 23 seconds left in the first half. And then the quarterbacks got hot in the final eight minutes with UCLA marching 70 yards in nine plays with Ryan Moya catching a three-yard touchdown pass for a three-point UCLA lead with 27 seconds to play. But Tennessee would come back with Daniel Lincoln nailing a 47-yard field goal to force overtime.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
California QB Kevin Riley completed 17 of 24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Michigan State

Conference
Roundup

Arizona … Idaho might not be USC, but Arizona has to be doing cartwheels over a near-perfect performance in the win over the Vandals. Everything worked with an explosive offense that didn't make a mistake, an opportunistic defense that set things up in the first half, and even some big plays on special teams. Willie Tuitama was flawless, and Nic Grigsby ran wild. Now the goal will be consistency. Hang 500+ yards on Toledo and New Mexico State over the next two weeks, and then it'll be time to get excited.
Arizona State … One sack. For all the good things that happened for Arizona State in the win over Northern Arizona, the biggest key was the one sack. NAU might not be LSU when it comes to rushing the passer, but it was still a good start for an offensive line that did nothing in pass protection last year. Now the running game has to be more effective. There will be problems any time Rudy Carpenter is the leading rusher.
California … Cal showed the balance and explosiveness needed to get by Michigan State, but the defense struggled to come up with the big stops to put the game away. Even so, this was a strong win, with Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen each running well, while Kevin Riley pulled away from Nate Longshore in the quarterback controversy. One of the other stars was punter Bryan Anger, who had a bad late punt, but had three bombs that changed the game early on.
Oregon … And the quarterback problems continue. With Nate Costa already lost for the year with a knee injury, it didn't help to get Justin Roper knocked out against Washington with an apparent concussion. Jeremiah Masoli was strong in relief, and he should be fine if he's the main man against Utah State, but the Ducks can't afford any more QB problems. The running game was a plus cranking out 256 yards against the Huskies. Jeremiah Johnson was fantastic as the new No. 1 back.
Oregon State … The Stanford loss will stick in the Beavers' craw for a long time. This was the type of game OSU would win in a few weeks after getting some of the kinks worked out, and on the plus side, QB Lyle Moevao was effective throwing the ball and receivers Shane Morales and Sammie Stroughter were tremendous. Now the Beavers have to stop the mistakes early on and not let them be a part of their season, like last year. 12 penalties for 100 yards, two interceptions, and five fumbles, losing a big one at the end, proved to be a killer. Unfortunately, Penn State next week isn't a team to get everything right against.
Stanford … A running game? Stanford? Oregon State might be rebuilding a bit, but the run defense was still supposed to be excellent after being so strong last year. The Cardinal ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns and took advantage of all the Beaver mistakes. This might not be a complete Stanford team, but it showed in the huge opening day win that it'll be more physical, a lot tougher, and few more competitive than in the past. As good as this win was, Stanford now has to work on doing far more against teams working on the outside. Arizona State is almost certain to work the perimeter throughout next week.
UCLA … The key will be to keep the emotion of the win over Tennessee and carry it into the key date with BYU two weeks later. The team needs to get healthy, but too many key players are going down. The other big issue is the running game, which was non-existent against the Volunteers. This is going to be a work in progress, and although this was a big win that'll get the fan base and the program fired up, there will be plenty of ups and downs with so many injuries and so many holes.
USC   The Trojans aced their only test before the showdown with Ohio State in a couple of weeks. Sure, Virginia is down, but any time you trek across the country and obliterate an opponent in front of its fans, it’s impressive. QB Mark Sanchez showed no ill-effects from the kneecap injury he suffered in practice, and WR Damian Williams was outstanding in his first game since transferring from Arkansas. Sanchez started out safe, and then he started bombing away showing a nice deep arm with great touch. The defense was as surly as expected, allowing just 187 yards and an early touchdown.
Washington … And it doesn't get any easier. Washington played like a young, inexperienced team against Oregon, and while Jake Locker is a superior talent, he can't do it all himself. The defense held up for about a half before struggling with the Duck O line, while the offense failed to generate anything through the air to keep up in the fight. Things aren't going to get any easier with BYU and Oklahoma ahead. If UW plays like this, it won't just start out 0-3 before a week off, it'll be 0-3 without coming remotely close to being competitive.
Washington State The Paul Wulff era in Pullman got off to a sour note in the rout by Oklahoma State. There were breakdowns in all three facets of the game, but the inability to move the ball on a suspect Cowboy defense was the biggest concern. Gary Rogers was a disappointment in his first game as the starting quarterback and Wazzu didn’t get on the board until midway through the third quarter. The defense played better than the numbers indicate, doing its part until things got out of control in the final quarter
