WAC Game of the Week

San Jose State 13 ... UC Davis 10
Kyle Reed connected with Kevin Jurovich from 17 yards out with eight seconds to play to avoid the upset and complete the comeback. UCD took a first quarter lead on a 20-yard field goal and a 54-yard Bakari Grant touchdown grab, but the Spartan defense stiffened over the final 45 minutes. Reed hit Terrance Williams on a three-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and engineered a seven play, 64-yard drive to come up with the win. The two teams combined to commit 17 penalties and six turnovers.

WAC Player of the Week
Fresno State RB Ryan Matthews ran 26 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns, and caught a pass for 20 yards in the win over Rutgers.

Conference
Roundup

Boise State … The Broncos needed nothing less than a great opening day performance from Kellen Moore to show that he was the right choice for the job, and he came through against Idaho State with an efficient, mistake-free day. Ian Johnson got limited work, and that's a major plus. Basically, the star of the show will be fresh for Bowling Green in two weeks. It's nitpicking, but hanging on to the ball longer would be nice after keeping it for just 22:53.
Fresno State … The defense did a great job of holding up when Rutgers tried to bomb away and keep bombing. The secondary did a nice job of keeping the great Scarlet Knight receivers in check, while the run defense was a brick wall. The one down side was the play of Tom Brandstater, who connected on some big plays thanks to Seyi Ajirotutu, but was hardly sharp. He'll have to be better against Wisconsin in two weeks.
Hawaii … There's no need to get too hung up about being blown away at Florida; the Gators could end up winning the national title. The problem is that this game created more questions, especially at quarterback. Inoke Funaki got garbage time work and looked great, for the most part, while Greg Alexander got Florida's A game and struggled. The Weber State game will be the better indicator of where the Warriors are at, but considering the problems in the Sugar Bowl, and all the turnover, getting blasted like they were by Florida isn't exactly what the team was hoping for.
Idaho … Nothing worked for the Vandals. The defense was helpless against the Arizona offense, the attack didn't get anything going, with Deonte Jackson being held in check from the start, and Nathan Enderle failing to move the offense. It was as poor a performance as the team could've come up with, but fortunately the one early chance at a win comes next week against Idaho State. Lose that, and right the season off.
Louisiana Tech … It's not like Tech played well in the win over Mississippi State. The running game was streaky, the passing game was off, and there were three turnovers, but the defense came up with the big plays when it had to and MSU screwed up worse. It's a win over a BCS conference team; it doesn't matter how it happened. Going into Kansas and with Boise State coming up soon, the Bulldogs needed to know they could play with a real team. This could be a program definer for the young Derek Dooley era.
Nevada … This is what tune up games are for. The running game was dominant against Grambling with 426 yards, but there were a few mistakes, some turnovers, but nothing to get worried about going into the Texas Tech showdown. Colin Kaepernick was the star, showing off his running ability as well as his passing skills, while Nick Graziano was fine in his time completing seven of 12 passes for 75 yards.
New Mexico State … Didn’t Play This Week
San Jose State … It took almost the entire game, but San Jose State finally got past UC Davis when Kyle Reed got hot. The former Cal transfer was razor sharp when he had to be, but the same can't be said for a ground game that was held to 42 yards. This was a strong comeback win that should help the team's mettle for down the road, but the firepower needs to be there next week to keep up with Nebraska.
Utah State… The offense simply wasn't effective enough against UNLV. The defense wasn't much of a prize, either, when it came to getting off the field and stopping drives, but the big issue was the lack of a consistent attack. Now there's even more of a quarterback issue than before after Sean Setzer struggled to make things happen. Playing Oregon next week isn't going to cure any ills, but the team has to find something early on it can work around or the season will go in the tank in a big hurry.
