ACC Game of the Week

Wake Forest 30 ... Ole Miss 28
In a fantastic game. Wake Forest won on a 41-yard Sam Swank field goal with three seconds to play. The Demon Deacons had to go 57 yards in less than a minute to get into position after Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead gave the Rebels the lead on a terrific, scrambling five-yard touchdown pass to Cordera Eason with 1:01 to play. In the seesaw game, Swank kept Wake Forest alive with two field goals and Riley Skinner came up with two touchdown passes to keep pace with Snead, who threw for four scores to four different receivers.

ACC Player of the Week
Wake Forest PK Sam Swank hit three field goals from 21, 27, and the game-winner from 41 yards out in the win over Ole Miss

Conference Roundup
Boston College … The Georgia Tech game could've gone either way, but the BC offense sputtered late while the Yellow Jackets came through when they had to. Chris Crane struggled under the constant pressure of the Tech defensive front, and while he only took the one big sack for a safety, he was hurried. Several backs rotated in the running game with Jeff Smith and Josh Haden each struggling to get going with Smith held to 2.5 yards per carry. With a week off, three winnable games against UCF, Rhode Island and at NC State, followed by another off week before the real schedule kicks in, there's time to tune up.
Clemson … Blowing away Citadel will hardly make up for the loss to Alabama, but it was a necessary blasting to show that yes, the offense really does work. While the outcome was never in doubt, it would've been nice if the defense had played better, giving up 427 yards and 338 through the air. Granted, most of the yards were meaningless, but for everyone's sake, the bigger the blowouts right now, the better. Another big win is needed next week against NC State to keep moving forward.
Duke … Duke is going to be kicking itself. The Northwestern game was there for the taking, but the Wildcats came through with the big stop and the big play and the Blue Devils didn’t. The offense moved the ball well with a good ground attack and a nice day from the quarterbacks, Zack Asack did a good job completing all five of his passes for 38 yards, and the offense controlled the ball, holding on to it for 39:15. But nothing came of the late fourth quarter drives and a winnable game got away.
Florida State … Western Carolina is hardly a proper test to see where the Noles might be at, but considering the suspensions and the debut of newly anointed starting quarterback Christian Ponder, a 69-0 blasting is exactly what the team needed. That’s what these types of games are for. Young teams need tune-ups, and the Seminoles got theirs in. Backup D’Vontrey Richardson also looked strong in relief completing five of six passes for 57 yards and a score, while running for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
Georgia Tech… It wasn't pretty, but considering Boston College has the type of defense perfectly set up to slow down the Georgia Tech offense, getting the big win to start the ACC season was good now matter how it looked. The running game only came up with 162 yards, and there wasn't a passing game, but the offense, for the most part, took advantage of its opportunities and the defense stiffened when it had to. If the Yellow Jackets can win at Virginia Tech next week, then it'll truly be time to get fired up.
Maryland … The loss to Middle Tennessee goes beyond disastrous for Maryland. The offense simply isn’t working right when 143 of your 357 yards come on two plays, and while there were chances late, the O simply wasn’t good enough to take advantage of the opportunities. Da’Rel Scott is a weapon and Darrius Heyward-Bey is an NFL starter hanging around the college game, but until a quarterback emerges, the Terps are going to be in big trouble. Chris Turner isn’t getting the job done. It might be time to sink or swim with Josh Portis.
Miami … Miami was too young and too inexperienced to beat a team like Florida. The running game was stuffed from the start, Robert Marve, moxie and all, couldn't get the ball down the field, and it took a 50-yard bomb of a field goal to avoid the shutout. However, the defense, until the fourth quarter, played extremely well, hit very hard, and confused and frustrated Tim Tebow and the Gator attack. While the Canes appear to be a year away from making some serious noise, in a year when the ACC stinks, the defense alone could put them in the conference title hunt.
North Carolina … Didn’t Play This Week
NC State … NC State got up early on William & Mary and was never in any sort of trouble, but it was an ugly performance with only 11 first downs, 2-of-16 on third down conversions, seven penalties and two turnovers. Harrison Beck has to be the starter after playing far better than Daniel Evans, who only completed 4-of-11 passes. The offense is going to be a work in progress all season long. The running game only came up with 67 yards.
Virginia
… There’s a lot of work to do. A lot. It’s one thing to struggle offensively against USC, but the Cavaliers couldn’t get anything going against Richmond with little rushing offense, just 81 yards, and not enough consistent passing production. Two turnovers and nine penalties didn’t help, but the defense was tremendous throughout. The D will have to carry things for a while.
Virginia Tech … The offense showed just how desperately it needs Tyrod Taylor. Sean Glennon only completed 3-of-8 passes for 42 yards with a touchdown and an interception against Furman, and while Darren Evans and Kenny Lewis ran well, Taylor provides the desperately needed playmaking spark. The defense is playing well, it held Furman to 34 rushing yards and helped out the struggling Hokie attack, but more will be needed from the passing game to get by Georgia Tech next week.
Wake Forest
A win over an SEC team, even it was over Ole Miss is one thing, but to do it with a razor-sharp last-gasp drive in the final minute of the game shows just how good this team can be. Riley Skinner wasn't great, but he was fantastic when he had to be, and Sam Swank showed once again why he's one of the best in college football as he coolly and calmly hit the game-winner. Now comes a week off before the ACC opener at Florida State, and in those two weeks the Demon Deacons have to find a more consistent running game. They struggled was too much against a depleted Rebel defensive front.
