Big 12 Game of the Week

Colorado 31 … Eastern Washington 24
Colorado CB Cha’Pelle Brown returned a pick 27 yards for a touchdown with just under two minutes to play to cap a 17-point fourth quarter in the comeback. Eastern Washington had one last shot, but D.J. Dykes came up with a pick in the end zone to seal the win. The Buffs got three touchdown passes from Cody Hawkins including a two-yarder to Jake Behrens to tie it at 24 with just over two minutes to play, and then Brown came up with the game winner. CU finished with just 90 yards rushing, but held the Eagles to 47 on the ground.

Big 12 Player of the Week
Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant caught nine passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned three punts for 75 yards and a touchdown in the win over Houston

Conference
Roundup

Baylor … The Bears needed a blowout win over a team like Northwestern State just to get the offense moving with 537 yards while converting 8-of-11 third down chances. Robert Griffin was fantastic as he showed what he could do with time to operate. Blake Szymanski and Kirby Freeman weren’t bad either as the BU quarterbacks combined to complete 20-of-26 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns. The young team could use a few more of these tune-up games, but it’s time to hit the ground running.
Colorado … Uh oh. Colorado struggled way too much to get by an Eastern Washington team that might be good, but it’s still an FCS team. Give credit to the defense for coming through in the final few minutes, with Cha’Pelle Brown getting the pick-six for the game-winning score and D.J. Dykes sealing the win with a pick, but there has to be a concern that the running game didn’t work. Star back Darrell Scott only gained 39 yards on 13 carries, and the team ran for just 90 yards and a 2.7 per carry average.
Iowa State  … It wasn’t always pretty, and there’s a lot work needing to be done, but Iowa State cranked out 48 points against Kent State as the offense took advantage of its opportunities. The quarterback rotation of Austen Arnaud and Phillip Bates worked for the second game in a row as the two combined to complete 15-of-21 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Bates ran well and was the most dangerous ground option, but Arnaud showed he could run, too. Both will keep playing, and both need to be game-planned for.
Kansas Considering the weather conditions weren't perfect, the shutout win over Louisiana Tech was just about perfect. Todd Reesing was masterful as he mixed up his short throws with his big plays well enough to keep a good Bulldog defense on its heels, while the running game did just enough to help out. Tech doesn't have a juggernaut of an offense, but a shutout is a shutout. This was the type of performance needed going into the showdown at South Florida.
Kansas State … Josh Freeman is getting more and more comfortable. He was dominant against Montana State as he ran well and spread the ball around even better. While a win over a FCS team is hardly anything to chirp about, it was important for the team’s attitude on defense and special teams with two blocked punts for a score and a fumble return for a touchdown. Scoring like that, even in a game like this, sets a tone.
Missouri … It's never a bad thing to have a tune-up for the offense, and that's exactly what Missouri got against SE Missouri State. Even more important than the perfect statistical day from the first teamers was the time given to the backups to see some good work. Backup QB Chase Patton completed 7-of-8 passes and several reserve backs. Jeremy Maclin played despite suffering an ankle injury last week; he caught a touchdown pass. Now the momentum has to continue in a tougher-than-it-looks game against Nevada.
Nebraska … San Jose State might have played inspired football, but there's reason to be concerned. The offense struggled to get anything consistently going even though Joe Ganz threw the ball consistently. The running game was stuffed for 99 yards, but two turnovers and 12 penalties for 103 yards hurt. Call it a work in progress, but the Huskers are 2-0 going into a certain win against New Mexico State. Things are progressing, and the hope has to be for everything to be clicking by October 4th against Missouri.
Oklahoma … It took a little while to get the machine rolling against Cincinnati, but one things started to work, the attack was breathtaking. Sam Bradford might have thrown a few interceptions, but one was on a deep ball and he was razor-sharp when he had to be. There was a running game, too, with DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown each having strong games. Now the team has to show it can dominate on a regular basis on the road, unlike last year, with a trip to Washington next week. This team is national title good if it can be consistent.
Oklahoma State … Oklahoma State’s offense is humming on all cylinders. It ripped up Washington State last week and then came a yard short of hitting the 700-yard mark this week against Houston. Zac Robinson was impressive, but this game was all about Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter. Bryant was an unstoppable home run hitter, while Hunter averaged 9.5 yards per carry. Keith Toston averaged 9.6 yards per run. With all the big numbers, don’t forget about the offensive line. It’s one of the best in the country, and it’s playing like it.
Texas … It was another blowout win, but for the second week in a row the pass defense was less than tight. It didn't matter, UTEP's offense wasn't going to come up with the big numbers needed to be a threat to pull off the win, but soon the secondary will have to start producing with all the top quarterbacks coming up on the slate. Of course, at the moment, Colt McCoy is playing better than anyone. He's making everyone around him better despite the lack of a superstar back to take the pressure off.
Texas A&M … The Aggies wanted to get Jerrod Johnson under center, but they couldn’t come right out and make a quarterback change considering Stephen McGee is a team-leader. Now there might not be any choice as McGee hurt his shoulder against New Mexico. Johnson didn’t make any mistakes, and while he wasn’t dynamic, he won the game. The bigger loss could be Mike Goodson, the star running back who hurt his knee early on. He came back, but he might be less than 100% with some big games coming up. Considering Jorvorskie, who ran for 19 yards, has been banged up, Goodson needs to be healthy.
Texas Tech… Is it time to worry that it's only game two and the machine isn't firing on all cylinders? Chalk up the win over Nevada to a defense that bent, but rarely broke as it held the Wolf Pack offense to field goals instead of touchdowns until the fourth quarter. When the offense needed the big play, it got it from Michael Crabtree. In the end, it might be a good sign that the team didn't play well and still one, but the penalties are still a problem committing nine for 81 yards.
