Pac 10 Game of the Week

BYU 28 ... Washington 27
Washington QB Jake Locker ran for a three-yard touchdown with two seconds left to pull the Huskies within one, but in his excitement he threw the ball over his head and got flagged with a questionable celebration penalty. BYU blocked the 35-yard extra point attempt and sealed the win. The Cougars got three touchdown passes from Max Hall including a 15-yarder to Dennis Pitta with 3:31 to play to take the lead for good. Locker also ran for a 14-yard touchdown and threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
Arizona RB Nicholas Grigsby ran 20 times for 135 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Toledo.

Conference
Roundup

Arizona … If Nicholas Grigsby really can run on a consistent basis like he did over the first two weeks, the offense will be unstoppable. Toledo has a dangerous offense and the Wildcat defense all but shut it down, while offensively, Willie Tuitama remained sharp. Considering the problems in the Mike Stoops era, a 2-0 start by a total score of 111 to 16 is nothing to sneeze at. If the team keeps playing like this, New Mexico won't be an issue next week, and then comes the trip to UCLA.
Arizona State … Rudy Carpenter was able to produce despite getting hit all game long by the Stanford defense. Considering Georgia is up in a few weeks, that's not a good thing. The defense did a good job of limiting the big play and the running game did what it could to provide some balance, but the 41-17 final score makes it look like it was an easier win than it was. The Sun Devils had a bit of a fight for three quarters despite staying ahead. It's about improving each week and getting the first Pac 10 win out of the way is a plus. Now it's tune-up time against UNLV before the Georgia showdown.
California … The offensive line has been tremendous over the first two games. Jahvid Best has been running well, and the team cranked out 391 rushing yards against Washington State. The defense also played well allowing the Cougars to convert just one of 13 third down chances, picking off four passes, and generating consistent pressure into the backfield. If the Bears play this well over the next two games, Maryland and Colorado State don't stand a chance.
Oregon … Didn’t Play This Week
Oregon State … Uh oh. All of a sudden, the run defense that was so impressive last season has gone bye-bye, and the offense isn't nearly consistent enough to play with a team like Penn State. Lyle Moevao has to cut down on his interceptions, and the running game has to be more effective. Jacquizz Rodgers is good, and he's too explosive to be held in check for so many plays. Basically, the lines have to play better. That's what the Hawaii game is for next week. USC and Utah are to follow, and this Beaver team is nowhere near ready to beat either one.
Stanford … The Cardinal hung around with the high-powered Arizona State attack for three quarters, but it just couldn't get over the hump and get the one big defensive stop needed to change the game. There wasn't much explosion, but Tavita Pritchard was accurate on his short-range passes. The problem going forward will be the quarterback shuffle. Jason Forcier and Alex Loukas each got time, but none of the three did too much to take the job by the horns.
UCLA … Didn’t Play This Week
USC  … Didn’t Play This Week
Washington … All anyone will talk about is the controversy at the end of the BYU game with the celebration penalty on Jake Locker, but the bigger issue for Washington is how Jake Locker is the only one doing much of anything for the offense. He ran for 62 of the team's 133 yards on the ground, and while his receivers were fine, they weren't anything special. With Oklahoma up next, it doesn't get any easier. Defensively, the Huskies couldn't get off the field struggling way too much on third downs.
Washington State … After two games, Washington State hasn't been close. The Paul Wulff era couldn't get off to a worse start with no defense and absolutely nothing happening on offense. If nothing else, the Cougars are supposed to be able to bomb away, and they can't do it with the offensive line not providing any time. California will hang big numbers on everyone, but if Wazzu loses at Baylor and struggles against Portland State, pack in the season.
