ACC Game of the Week

Virginia Tech 20 … Georgia Tech 17
Virginia Tech was helped by two big penalties to keep a late drive going leading to the game-winning 21-yard Dustin Keys field goal. The two teams traded shots with Josh Nesbitt running for an 18-yard score and hitting Roddy Jones for a 41-yard touchdown to keep the Yellow Jackets alive, but three turnovers and eight penalties proved costly. Virginia Tech answered with an eight-yard Darren Evans touchdown run in the second quarter and a two-yard Tyrod Taylor run with ten seconds left in the first half. Georgia Tech only threw for 109 yards, but Virginia Tech only came up with 48.

ACC Player of the Week
Maryland RBs Da'Rel Scott and Davin Meggett combined for 169 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries in the win over Cal.

Conference Roundup
Boston College … Didn’t Play This Week
Clemson … Yeah, Clemson beat NC State rather easily, despite the 27-9 final score, and yeah, the Wolfpack has a good defense, but the Tiger offense isn’t humming quite like it should be. C.J. Spiller and James Davis are next-level backs, but they only combined for 95 yards. The offensive line did a decent job, but it wasn’t dominant. Soon, the skill players are going to need more time to work.
Duke … Duke wouldn’t have won this game against Navy last year. The Blue Devils got a tightly-efficient day from QB Thaddeus Lewis and a terrific performance from Eron Riley. However, there was nothing coming from the running backs. Lewis had 41 yards rushing, and the rest of the Blue Devils combined for 38. Defensively, outside of one big run, the Blue Devils did a great job of keeping the Navy running game under wraps.
Florida State … The schedule couldn’t work out better. With the academic suspensions and the new, young players being put into place, the Noles needed the time to work. Christian Ponder had a great game against Chattanooga, while D’Vontrey Richardson showed that he needs time on the field to add another dimension. Now the team needs to stay sharp against Wake Forest, but it might be ready. The tune-ups should’ve worked.
Georgia Tech
… The Virginia Tech loss was a game the Yellow Jackets will eventually win with a bit more experienced. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over, the Hokies didn’t. The Yellow Jackets committed the key penalties, the Hokies didn’t. The defense was fantastic, especially in the second half, and that’ll keep the team in most games. Get used to the close battles. There will be plenty more where this one came from.
Maryland … The win over Cal might not have just changed around the season, it might have changed the Maryland program. Head coach Ralph Friedgen had been saying he believes his Terp team has the talent and potential to be strong, and it showed it by taking advantage of a sleepy Bear team. The offense didn't explode through the air, but Chris Turner didn't make mistakes and was extremely efficient. The defense might have given up a ton of passing yards, 424, but it got off the field by allowing Cal to convert just 2-of-11 third down chances.
Miami … Didn’t Play This Week
North Carolina … Speed, explosion, and great play from the defense. North Carolina showed against Rutgers that it might be a major ACC player this year. Brandon Tate continues to be a do-it-all star, while the passing game showed the big play ability to put the game away. The defense swarmed all over the Rutgers running game and picked off Mike Teel four times, but most impressively, it didn't allow a third down conversion. This was a big win, but beating Virginia Tech and Miami over the next two weeks would really kick off a special season.
NC State … On the plus side, Russell Wilson was back at quarterback after the horrific-looking moment in the season-opener against South Carolina when he was carted off the field. However, Wilson was awful. He only completed 10-of-21 passes for 92 yards with an interception against Clemson. He ran for 26 yards, but he didn’t do nearly enough to get the offense moving, while Harrison Beck went a decent 5-of-8 for 60 yards. The offense just isn’t working, and while the defense has been strong, it’s not carrying the team.
Virginia
Connecticut has been a good defensive team that gets by offensively, but it busted out in a big way against Virginia with 382 rushing yards and 397 through the air. Tyler Lorenzen was nearly perfect, completing 13-of-15 passes, and Donald Brown had a special game running the ball. This might have been a watershed moment for the program. This might be when UConn goes from a nice Big East team that no one takes seriously to a real, live contender. It was that good a game.
Virginia Tech … Sean Glennon was nowhere to be found. In a close game against Georgia Tech that, not to be too dramatic, was make or break for the season, it was Tyrod Taylor who ran the show with Darren Evans doing the heavy lifting. There was no passing game, but Taylor kept his poise and didn’t come up with the costly, killing turnovers that Georgia Tech did. The defense did a relatively nice job against the Yellow Jacket running game, allowing 278 yards without losing control of the game. This might not have changed the season, but it provided hope that another ACC title might not be an unreachable dream.
Wake Forest
