WAC Game of
the Week
Wisconsin 13 ... Fresno
State 10
In a defensive slugfest, Wisconsin forced an first quarter turnover with DeAndre
Levy picking off a tipped pass leading to a two-yard Garrett Graham touchdown
catch. Philip Welch added field goals from 38 and 23 yards to keep the Badgers
ahead, but it would be a battle. Fresno State relied on the big play,
highlighted by a 47-yard Devon Wylie touchdown catch, but Kevin Goessling missed
three field goals to stall potential momentum-stealing drives. The Badgers were
pinned on their one-yard line in the final minutes, but powered their way to a
first down and the win.
WAC
Player of the Week
San Jose State RB Yonus Davis ran 18 times for
143 yards and a touchdown in the win
over San Diego State

Roundup
Boise State
… The Boise
State offense is lacking explosion. It
was solid against Bowling Green with Ian
Johnson running well and Kellen Moore
hitting the short to midrange passes,
but there weren’t any second half points
and there was next to nothing big
happening outside of a 53-yard Johnson
run in the first half. It was a decent
win over a solid MAC team, but Boise
State has yet to play like Boise State
with Moore at the helm.
Fresno State … Fresno State hung
punch for punch with Wisconsin, and did
a good job of standing up to the Badger
power running game, but couldn't come up
with the points needed off of big
drives. The speed and athleticism came
through on several big plays, but many
went for naught with Kevin Goessling's
three missed field goals proving to be
critical. Now the key is for the
Bulldogs to refocus and not let this
painful loss put them in the tank. This
was a tough loss, but respectable. A
loss at Toledo would put the program in
the tank going into a road date at UCLA.
Hawaii … Hawaii has always had
problems away from home, and now that
the team is in a transition period there
will be more problems against teams like
Oregon State. Tyler Graunke wasn’t
exactly setting the world on fire, but
he was the best of the quarterback
options before hurting his wrist against
the Beavers. Inoke Funaki only completed
4-of-8 passes for 36 yards with an
interception. Soon, the offense had
better get moving or this will be a
long, ugly season.
Idaho … Idaho might have lost big
to Western Michigan, and the defense
will be an issue all year, but the
offense showed a spark of life with
Nathan Enderle coming up with a great
day and Eddie Williams coming through as
a No. 1 target. Deonte Jackson had his
2008 breakthrough game running the ball,
but sacks and too many runs stuffed at
the line were a problem. The Idaho
offensive line has to start playing
better.
Louisiana Tech … Didn’t Play This
Week
Nevada … Missouri's offense is on
fire, so there's no reason to get too
upset about getting blown away. However,
there has to be a worry that in game one
without RB Luke Lippincott, the offense
struggled. Colin Kaepernick was the most
effective rushing weapon, but the game
got out of hand so there wasn't much of
a chance for the backs to get involved.
The passing game wasn't able to keep up
the pace. Now the team has a week off
before dealing with UNLV.
New Mexico State … The New Mexico
State offense has had all off-season,
and a few more weeks, to prepare for
this game against Nebraska. It had game
film on a Husker team that should be
looking a little bit ahead to a battle
with Virginia Tech. The offense still
didn’t work. There are too many veterans
and too much talent to come up with just
225 passing yards. The O line didn’t do
a good job, and the O struggled to keep
things moving.
San Jose State …
The addition
of Yonus Davis might not make San Jose
State a power, but he certainly adds
more pop to the running game. After
being out of the mix over the last two
years, he showed against San Diego State
that there can be more to the Spartan
offense than Kyle Reed, who came up with
an ultra-efficient 20-of-25 passing day.
If San Jose State can hold on to the
ball for 40:10 every game, it’ll be in
great shape.
Utah State…
Utah might be
a BCS buster, so there’s no reason to
get too upset about a blowup blowout
loss, but Utah State needs to be far
more competitive. 2-of-12 on third down
conversions, seven penalties, and three
turnovers proved to be too costly, while
the mere 27 rushing yards didn’t help.
The offense has to be far more explosive
and there have to be a few chances and
shots taken down the field, but that’s
been a problem for the last few years.
