ACC Game of the Week

NC State 30 ... East Carolina 24 OT
In a wild finish, NC State got a five-yard touchdown catch from George Bryan, which was originally ruled incomplete, and then reversed after a lengthy review. In overtime, State's Shane McKeen forced a Patrick Pinkney fumble, and the Wolfpack offense took advantage almost immediately with a 10-yard Andre Brown scoring run to win the game. Brown caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson, who threw three touchdown passes on the day. East Carolina traded scores, but never led, getting a 39-yard scoring play off a short catch from Jarvis Williams in the third and a 42-yard Norman Whitely touchdown dash in the third from the offense, and started out the scoring with a 23-yard Van Eskridge interception return for a score in the first.

ACC Player of the Week
Georgia Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer ran nine times for 141 yards and a touchdown, catching a pass for 20 yards in the 38-7 win over Mississippi State

Conference Roundup
Boston College … Chris Crane isn’t Matt Ryan. In fact, there might not be a quarterback in college football who is. Crane struggled early on against UCF, but he eventually found his groove and got the offense moving. Montel Harris had a strong game running the ball to help take the pressure off, and the defense was dominant holding UCF to 123 rushing yards and picking off four Michael Greco passes. With Rhode Island up next, the offense needs to open things up for Crane a little bit. That has to be a tune-up game before dealing with NC State.
Clemson … Considering it was an easy blowout over South Carolina State, there has to be some concern that the passing game isn’t quite clicking as well as it should be. Cullen Harper threw two interceptions and didn’t produce enough on the deep balls. Eventually, C.J. Spiller has to break out. He was fine, but it was James Davis who came up with the big early runs to end the game. Now the team has to be prepared for a shootout with a confident Maryland coming up next.
Duke … Didn’t Play This Week
Florida State … Before going into full-blown panic mode after turning it over seven times, committing 12 penalties, and cranking out just 220 yards in the loss to Wake Forest, remember that this is still a very, very young FSU team that's just starting to figure out what it has with all the returning players from suspension. That's not to excuse the horrific offensive game, but wait one more game, with Colorado coming to Jacksonville next week, before it's time to get scared. The defense played well as it had to hold time and again after the offense put it in a horrible position with all the turnovers. Now there needs to be some semblance of a running game again, and the mistakes have to stop.
Georgia Tech… Mississippi State has an aggressive, solid run defense that stuffed Auburn the week before, but it wasn't even close to figuring out what Georgia Tech was trying to do. With Josh Nesbitt getting hurt early on with a hamstring injury, the offense became even more reliant on running the ball with no threat of a passing game whatsoever. Whatever. Tech only completed 4-of-9 passes for 69 yards, but it didn't matter as the running game was averaging 8.1 yards per carry.
Maryland … Maryland’s offense finally seemed to have found its confidence. Eastern Michigan might not have the greatest defense, but the Terps still did what they needed to do to rip it apart and keep the chains moving. Chris Turner was fantastic helping the offense convert 8-of-13 third down chances. This was a strong confidence booster for the offense going into the showdown against Clemson next week, but the defense has to do a better job against short to midrange passing game.
Miami … All of a sudden, Miami looked very fast, very sharp, and very dominant as it exploded on Texas A&M with a big run to put away a tight game. Robert Mavre had his breakout game with a great passing day, while Graig Cooper took over the running game with Javarris James out. The defense softened late, but when it mattered, it gave up one big play early to Mike Goodson for a touchdown, and that was it. The team appeared to be playing with confidence, but most importantly, it was playing well on the lines. That was missing over the last few years. Next week's game against North Carolina will show if Miami really is on the rise, or if A&M is just awful.
North Carolina … North Carolina has only itself to blame for the loss to Virginia Tech. It didn't help that T.J. Yates was lost for the game with an ankle injury and Mike Paulus completed just 3-of-8 passes for 23 yards with two interceptions, but the entire team made mistakes. Virginia Tech wasn't playing well enough to win unless the Tar Heels screwed up, and there were 14 penalties for 121 yards and four turnovers. Considering Miami is starting to play better, next week's trip for Butch Davis and his crew is far more vital now than it looked halfway through the third quarter against the Hokies.
NC State … East Carolina had everything to play for, and NC State was just trying to get the season going, but sound coaching and a solid performance from Russell Wilson get the Wolfpack on track. Harrison Beck got his chance to shine, but he threw a pick six in the first quarter and it was Wilson who made the offense go. Andre Brown was effective when needed, and the return of Jamelle Eugene provided a nice weapon as both a receiver and a runner. This still isn't an ACC title contender, but as this game showed, things are quickly improving.
Virginia … Didn’t Play This Week
Virginia Tech … The Hokies look lousy, there's no passing game, and the defense has been mediocre by its own high standards, but they got through two tough ACC games against Georgia Tech and North Carolina and are a missed block on the late punt against East Carolina from being 4-0. This is hardly a pretty team, but it knows how to win and it pounces on every mistake. North Carolina gave the Hokies several opportunities, and the Tar Heel offense took advantage. The defense destroyed UNC backup QB Mike Paulus, and it'll have to be even more aggressive at Nebraska next week.
Wake Forest
… Florida State might be having problems, but give credit to Wake Forest for taking advantage of all the mistakes, and forcing several of them, with seven turnovers on the way to yet another win over the Noles. The Demon Deacons didn't play well, Sam Swank missed three field goals, the offense couldn't get into the end zone, and there were two turnovers, but this was still a good win over a team looking to make a statement, and now if Wake can beat Navy, it'll be 4-0 with an off-week before dealing with Clemson.
