Pac 10 Game of the Week

Boise State 37 … Oregon 32
Boise State exploded with a 24-point second quarter with Kellen Moore throwing for two short scores and Ian Johnson running for a six-yard touchdown. Oregon tried to answer on the first drive of the second half with an 18-yard Jeremiah Johnson scoring run, but the Broncos answered with a 73-yard Vinny Perretta touchdown catch and two of Kyle Brotzman’s three field goals for a 37-13 lead. Oregon lost quarterback Jeremy Masoli to a concussion, and freshman Darron Thomas came in to throw three fourth quarter touchdown passes with two to Ed Dickson to pull within five with less than two minutes to play, but the Broncos recovered the onside kick.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
Arizona QB Willie Tuitama completed 16-of-29 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the win over UCLA.

Conference
Roundup

Arizona … The offense didn’t exactly blow up against UCLA, but it was effective. It was obvious early on that the Bruin attack wasn’t going to do much of anything, and all Arizona had to do was not screw up on offense and to keep moving the ball. Willie Tuitama did that. Eventually, the Wildcat attack will have to blow up in a firefight, but at 3-1 with Washington and Cal up next, the same formula that worked this week should be effective over the next few games.
Arizona State … ASU has to learn how to deal with power, and it needs an offensive line that can hit someone. Georgia came into town and shoved its way to a win with a great ground game and tough defense. The Sun Devil attack didn't even pretend to run the ball mainly because it couldn't. That's fine, but Rudy Carpenter has to pick up the slack. He missed too many open receivers when he had time, and he struggled to make the right plays when he didn't have time. Over the off-week, the team has to get ready for a Cal team that'll be sure to try to pound the ball.
California … Didn’t Play This Week
Oregon … Much will be made about the Oregon quarterback situation and how the injuries were the reason for the loss to Boise State, but the quarterbacks don’t play defense. Boise State came up with too many big plays through the air against the Oregon secondary, and while the Duck D line was great against the run, it didn’t generate its expected pass rush. The Duck running game was fine, with LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Johnson running well, and while Chris Harper was awful when he got his chance under center, Darron Thomas became a playmaker in the fourth quarter.
Oregon State … Didn’t Play This Week
Stanford … Stanford’s defense stepped up in a big way in the second half against San Jose State, especially in the fourth quarter with a pass rush that turned out to be unstoppable. The offense was fine, but nothing special, outside of another great day from Toby Gerhard. He carried the attack, while Tavita Pritchard struggled way too much throwing the ball consistently. The next two road games against Washington and Notre Dame are winnable, but the passing game has to do more and the pass rushing production has to continue.
UCLA … UCLA’s offense needs options and it needs to get healthy. Not having top RB Kahlil Bell hurts, Chane Moline isn’t strong enough to carry the running game, while Kevin Craft didn’t do enough throwing the ball down the field to loosen up the Arizona defense. Craft averaged a horrendous 2.6 yards per pass. Until the offense comes around, the defense has to be a rock. Against Fresno State next week, the offensive line needs to get the running game moving.
USC  … Didn’t Play This Week
Washington … Didn’t Play This Week
Washington State … The run defense stuffed Portland State while the pass rush was solid. Most importantly, for the first time all year, the offense finally showed up. Head coach Paul Wulff might have gotten his first win for the Cougars, but he lost his quarterbacks with Kevin Lopina and Gary Rogers each getting knocked out. Marshall Lobbestael was terrific, but is he ready for Oregon next week? Expect more and more of Dwight Tardy running the ball until the quarterback situation is settled.
