Big 12 Game of the Week

Virginia Tech 35 … Nebraska 30
Virginia Tech seemingly had the game in hand thanks to four Dustin Keyes field goals and two scoring runs from Darren Evans, but Nebraska didn’t quit. Down 28-10, the Huskers got a 12-yard Roy Helu touchdown run on the last play of the third quarter and an 88-yard punt return for a score from Nate Swift in the fourth, but Tyrod Taylor put the Hokies up for good with a two-yard scoring dash. Nebraska wasn’t done fighting with Todd Peterson catching a 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:32 remaining. Virginia Tech recovered the on-side kick but couldn’t run out the clock. Nebraska wasn’t able to do anything with the ball in the final seconds.

Big 12 Player of the Week
Texas QB Colt McCoy completed 17-of-19 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran nine times for 84 yards and two scores in the win over Akransas.

Conference
Roundup

Baylor … Didn’t Play This Week
Colorado … Where was the defense? After stuffing West Virginia’s running game, the Buffs couldn’t handle a Florida State running game that hasn’t shown up in years. Worse yet, there was nothing offensively to rely on until the fourth quarter. Rodney Stewart ran 107 yards, but Darrell Scott was limited and Josh Smith didn’t come up with a big play until late. The team needs to be far tighter on both sides of the ball to have any shot against Texas. The defensive line has to play like it did against the Mountaineers and not the Noles.
Iowa State  … Didn’t Play This Week
Kansas … Didn’t Play This Week
Kansas State … Kansas State might have beaten UL Lafayette, but the run defense has become a major problem. After getting ripped up by Louisville, the Wildcats couldn’t deal with Tyrell Fenroy, who tore off 183 yards, and struggled to come up with a big play on third downs. The KSU attack was balanced and Josh Freeman was solid, but it the defense isn’t far better, the Big 12 season will get ugly early. There’s no worry about the run defense next week against Texas Tech, but Texas A&M and Colorado could go nuts.
Missouri … Didn’t Play This Week
Nebraska Nebraska wasn’t able to move the ball on Virginia Tech until it was way too late. The offense failed on third down after third down allowing the Hokies to control the ball and the clock, but the biggest problem was a lack of running game. Marlon Lucky was held to 17 yards on eight carries and the team gained just 55 yards on 25 tries. Meanwhile, the Hokies ran for 206 yards with three scores. If the offense couldn’t keep up with Virginia Tech, how is it going to handle Missouri?
Oklahoma This is one coldly efficient team. The offensive line had its worst game of the year in the win over TCU, there was no running game and the pass protection was spotty, but Sam Bradford and Manuel Johnson went ballistic with the big plays to put the game away early. TCU couldn't get anything going against a Sooner defense that forced four turnovers and came up with all the big stops when needed. There's one more tune-up, at Baylor, before the showdown against Texas. While things are going fine, it would be nice if the running game could start working again before facing the Longhorns.
Oklahoma State There’s no stopping the OSU offense at the moment. Troy isn’t just some Sun Belt team. This is a nasty defensive team with the athletes to do far more than it showed against the Cowboys, but once again, the Cowboy O line was tremendous and the skill players had room to roam. The offense hasn’t been tested yet and it hasn’t needed to come through with a clutch drive, but it’s no t necessarily a bad thing that it’s been in so many blowouts. Dez Bryant has been uncoverable and Kendall Hunter is running extremely well. OSU held on to the ball for 40:35.
Texas Colt McCoy has to be the front runner for the Heisman. It's early, way early, but no one in America is coming close to doing what No. 12 is. He still has yet to be tested by a real team, Arkansas hardly counts, but he's been stunningly accurate and consistent. It helps that the offensive line is giving him time to throw. Meanwhile, the defense deserves credit for being a brick wall. The secondary came up with a fantastic game as Arkansas didn't get anything going deep and failed to come up with a meaningful third down play. Now the real fun begins: at Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri.
Texas A&M … The team needs some sort of a spark. It struggled to come up with a big stop against the Army running game, while the offense had problems finding anything to rely on. Stephen McGee might need to be shut down for a while until his shoulder is fully healed, but Jerrod Johnson has been fine in his place. The big problem is the lack of a running game. There's no reason Texas A&M should be running for 133 yards against Army. That's inexcusable. Something has to change in a big hurry or next week's Oklahoma State game won't be pretty.
Texas Tech… Didn’t Play This Week
