Pac 10 Game of the Week

Oregon State 27 ... USC 21
Oregon State got out to a stunning 21-0 halftime lead thanks to two short James Rodgers touchdown catches, and a two-yard touchdown run from his brother, Jacquizz, but USC gave it a run in the second half. The Trojan offense roared out of the locker room with Mark Sanchez leading the way to two crisp seven-play drives hitting Ronald Johnson for a 26-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive and Damian Williams on a 29-yard scoring pass. Field position hurt USC over the rest of the half with Sanchez throwing an interception to Greg Laybourn, who took it to the one leading to a Jacquizz Rodgers touchdown run, but the extra point failed. A big kickoff return allowed Sanchez to lead the way to a quick touchdown drive hitting Patrick Turner for a 14-yard score with 1:19 to play, but Oregon State recovered the onside kick.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers ran 37 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 27 yards in the win over USC.

Arizona … Didn’t Play This Week
Arizona State For all the good things the Cal defense and special teams did against Colorado State, it would’ve been nice if the offense followed suit. Kevin Riley struggled a bit, but the running game was explosive, even without a home run, with Jahvid Best averaging 7.7 yards a pop and Shane Vereen running well. The special teams were flawless and the defense came up with its best game of the year just in time for a showdown against Arizona State.

Oregon Oregon’s running game is in high gear as LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Johnson are combining forced to stomp over everyone. Washington State didn’t have a prayer of slowing down anything the Duck offense wanted to do, while the Oregon defense dominated up front. There were 11 penalties, but that’s nitpicking in a near-perfect game. Considering the problems against the Boise State passing game, Oregon tightened up the pass defense. Now it has to be better at USC.
Oregon State
Where was this Oregon State against Penn State and Stanford? The Beaver offensive line that did such a great job of taking advantage of the overaggressive USC defense didn't do much of anything over the previous three games. Jacquizz Rodgers was a workhorse, proving able to handle a the ball close to 40 times and bouncing up time and again. Now this needs to be a springboard. This was a big win, and with Washington State and Washington up next on the Pac 10 schedule, after battling Utah next week, there's a chance to go on a nice conference run as long as the lines continue to play well and QB Lyle Moevao continues to play mistake-free.
Stanford At 3-2 and 2-1 in the Pac 10, Stanford can honestly dream about the possibility of a bowl game. Tavita Pritchard threw extremely well against Washington while Anthony Kimble was a surprise star with Toby Gerhart on the sidelines. The Cardinal took a little too long to put the Huskies away and committed 12 penalties, but overall this was a nice win before going off to Notre Dame. To nitpick further, UW was without Jake Locker and it was still a game deep into the fourth quarter. The defense needs to be a better job of stopping a limited attack like UW’s.
UCLA … UCLA might have stayed with Fresno State using smoke and mirrors, but a fact is a fact: the Bruins lost to yet another non-BCS conference team. The running game worked better than it did over the first few games and Kevin Craft was mistake-free. The effort is there and the coaches are doing what they can, but this Bruin team has a long way to go. A bowl game is still possible, but there’s little margin for error. Next week’s game against Washington State is for the season.
USC  … Where was the tackling? Where were the wide receivers? Before getting knocked out for the game with an apparent knee injury, Rey Maualuga made 12 tackles, but the USC defenders struggled to tackle Jacquizz Rodgers as well as the Oregon State receivers. Damian Williams had a nice game catching six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, but Patrick Turner and Ronald Johnson had a hard time breaking free, especially on third downs. Now that the national title dream is all but sunk, the Trojans have to gear it back up in a big hurry with road trips to Oregon and Arizona State up next.
Washington And there goes the Washington season. As if an 0-4 start wasn’t bad enough, the loss of QB Jake Locker to a broken thumb should be a devastating blow to the offense that relied on him for everything. Ronnie Fouch isn’t nearly the same runner and he struggled with his passing accuracy. Now it’ll be up to the rest of the offense to pick up the slack, but it might not matter. Beating Stanford at home was a must-have to save Ty Willingham’s job. This was supposed to be the breather.
Washington State The Cougars are a long way off before they’ll be competitive against the better teams. Marshall Lobbestael threw the ball relatively well against Oregon, but there wasn’t much of a running game and there were too many penalties and turnovers. The lines got whipped and beaten up on both sides, while the offense did nothing to slow down the momentum once the game got out of hand. The UCLA game next week is winnable, but the team has to be much sharper and it has to find at least one thing offensively it can count on.
