Pac 10 Game of the Week

Utah 31 ... Oregon State 28
Utah stunned Oregon State with a 11 points in the final 1:29. Bradon Godfrey caught a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Brian Johnson tied it at 28 with a run for a two-point conversion. The defense forced a three-and-out, and Utah took advantage going 35 yards in six plays setting up a 37-yard Louie Sakoda field goal as time ran out. The Beavers got two Lyle Moevao touchdown passes and a 26-yard interception return for a score from Al Afalava, while Utah kept pace with two Louie Sakoda field goals before the game-winner, a 14-yard touchdown catch from Freddie Brown and a 12-yard Brent Casteel scoring run. OSU outgained the Utes 405 yards to 337.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
USC QB Mark Sanchez completed 19-of-28 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Oregon.

Conference
Roundup

Arizona … Arizona did exactly what it was supposed to do with a miserable Washington team. Willie Tuitama was nearly perfect, there was a good balance with the running game coming up with 256 yards, the was only one penalty, no turnovers, and the team held on to the ball for over 36 minutes. Basically, it was a near-perfect performance with a trip to Stanford up next. Just two wins away from being bowl eligible, it might be a must to get next weeks with Cal and USC up next. The last thing the Wildcats need is to go on any sort of a losing streak.
Arizona State … What happened to the Arizona State offense? The running game was supposed to be average, and it was against Cal, and the defense was supposed to struggle, and was strong this week, but the passing game was mediocre. There was no pop, little happening down the field, and not nearly enough big plays on third downs. And now, to make matters worse with a trip to USC next week, QB Rudy Carpenter is banged up with a dinged up ankle.
California … Cal didn’t exactly get more offensive pop against Arizona State with Nate Longshore at the helm as opposed to Kevin Riley, but Longshore got the win. The offense, without star RB Jahvid Best, who’s scheduled to return next week after suffering a dislocated elbow a few weeks ago, only managed 277 yards and converted a mere 2-of-10 third down chances. The defense didn’t allow ASU to breathe and despite the relatively low score, the outcome was never really in doubt. Next up is Arizona. The Cal offense will have to start doing far more.
Oregon … The secondary is an issue. Fine, so USC’s passing game is going to get moving from time to time, but the Duck defensive backs allowed way too many big plays and made it too easy for Mark Sanchez. After getting ripped up by Boise State and USC in losses, the Ducks have to use the UCLA game next week to stiffen up before dealing with Arizona State and Cal on the road. Jeremy Masoli was fine, but he didn’t get his usual help from the running game. LeGarrette Blount ran for no yards on nine carries.
Oregon State Why was Oregon State trying to throw the ball in the final minute against Utah? Lyle Moevao was hot, but on their own 20, the Beavers should've just tried to run the clock out and get to overtime. Instead, Utah got the ball back with 1:06 to play and marched for the game-winning field goal. Granted, Utah could've used two of its timeouts had OSU tried to pound the ball, which didn't work all night, but the Ute offense wouldn't have been able to go on its final march with no timeouts left. This was a disastrous ending to a great game and a nice showing from the passing game. Fortunately, Washington State and Washington are up next to ease the pain.
Stanford … Stanford made too many mistakes early on and struggled too much to get the offense moving until it was too late against Notre Dame. Tavita Pritchard was awful in the early going, but he showed in the fourth quarter that he can get the offense moving. Toby Gerhart continues to be the team’s offensive star. He needs the ball more than his hands. He only carried the ball 13 times. Even with the loss, if the Cardinal can win at home against Arizona next week, a bowl game is there for the taking with winnable games against UCLA and Washington Stat to follow.
UCLA … This isn’t exactly a juggernaut of an offensive attack, but it’s moving the ball a little bit. After a three-game losing streak, the Bruins needed a confidence booster, and it got it against a horrendous Washington State team. Kevin Craft was solid, if not spectacular, and while the running game didn’t work, there was never any threat of being challenged. The Bruins need to show they can play on the road, with the lone road trip a 59-0 loss to BYU. Next week they go to Oregon.
USC  … No one feeds off positive momentum like USC. Once the ball gets rolling, it’s over. Oregon played well for about 20 minutes, but once Mark Sanchez got into a groove, the beleaguered Duck secondary didn’t have a chance. There were too many penalties for both sides, but USC was the bigger sinner with 12 for 114 yards to go along with two turnovers. With a wounded and punchless Arizona State up next, the only thing that can trip up the Trojans would be mistakes.
Washington … Not only is Washington 0-5, it’s not even close. It only lost to Stanford by a touchdown, and it battled with BYU in early September, but that was with Jake Locker. At the moment, nothing is working. It’s not Ronnie Fouch’s fault, he doesn’t have a great cast around him, and the defense didn’t help the cause in the loss to Arizona. With four home games in the next five, and Oregon State up in two weeks, the team needs to rest up, regroup, and see if it can find something it can count on going through the vital midseason stretch. But first, just getting a win would be nice.
Washington State … What a mess. UCLA’s offense isn’t doing much of anything this year, but it was able to move without too much of a problem early on. The one-time great Wazzu attack is long gone, doing nothing on the ground against the Bruins and getting little passing game to keep things moving. Marshall Lobbenstael is trying, but he’s not able to come up with the big throws needed to keep the chains moving. At the moment, it’s going to take a major miracle to come close to pulling off a win until the season ending trip to Hawaii.
