ACC Game of the Week

Florida State 41 … Miami 39
In a wild game, Florida State appeared to be on its way to an easy win with a 24-0 first half helped by two of Antone Smith’s four rushing touchdowns and a 15-yard Greg Carr scoring grab. Midway through the third quarter it was 31-10 on Smith’s third scoring run, and then things got weird. Miami scored 12 points in just over two minutes on a field goal, a blown punt snap for a safety, and a 51-yard Travis Benjamin touchdown catch on a halfback option pass from Graig Cooper. Off a bad pass from Christian Ponder, Sean Spence took an interception seven yards for a Miami score to get within five, and Matt Bosher made it 34-32 with a 24-yard field goal. FSU finally pulled away with a 20-yard Smith touchdown run with less than four minutes to play. Miami scored with 14 seconds to play, but couldn’t get the onside kick. In the driving rain, there were seven turnovers and 22 penalties between the two teams. Florida State didn’t punt.

ACC Player of the Week
North Carolina LB Bruce Carter made seven tackles, made two tackles for loss, and blocked three punts in the win over Connecticut.

Conference Roundup
Boston College … Boston College learned a valuable lesson. It can’t make mistakes. It dominated NC State with 578 yards of total offense, but three turnovers, a special teams breakdown, and six penalties proved costly. The defense wasn’t bad, allowing just 35 yards rushing, and DT B.J. Raji was unstoppable. Most importantly, QB Chris Crane proved he could lead the offense in a tough game. This was his win.
Clemson … Didn’t Play This Week
Duke … There are going to be games when Duke is simply beaten on talent. The offensive line couldn't do anything to slow down all the future NFL starters on the Tech defensive front, while the defense held tough for three quarters and simply broke down after not getting any help from the offense. Overall, the D did a nice job, but with only 35 rushing yards and no big plays from the passing game, this was a long day. Now comes a week off before dealing with Miami.
Florida State … Florida State dominated Miami in every way except for strange plays. Christian Ponder ran for 144 yards, but he looked like a rookie quarterback at times throwing the ball. However, he was a major-league playmaker with his legs. Antone Smith continued to be the Antone Smith Seminole fans have been hoping for, helping the Noles run for 281 yards and four touchdowns. The four turnovers will be chalked up to the rain and lousy conditions, somewhat, but Ponder made one horrendous throw for a pick six. The 12 penalties were way too many.
Georgia Tech… It's never a positive to be totally reliant on one or two players, but Georgia Tech is getting by with Jonathan Dwyer running it and Demaryius Thomas catching it. The defense was more than just rock-solid against Duke; it didn't allow the Blue Devils to do a thing. The offense wasn't always clicking in the first half, but it kicked in when it mattered in the second half and didn't make any big mistakes, losing just one fumble. With Gardner-Webb up next, the offense gets another shot to work on the timing before dealing with Clemson. If the defense plays like it did against Duke, it'll be a big win for the Yellow Jackets.
Maryland … There was a little bit of inside talk that the Terps were due for a clunker. After playing so well on a three-game winning streak, the offense fell flat against Virginia, the defense got run over, and now, a great-looking season is in question with Wake Forest up next and several tough games left to deal with. The Terps have to get back to what worked, and that’s running the ball, forcing mistakes on defense, and keeping the chains moving with the passing game.
Miami … Miami committed 10 penalties against Florida State, held on to the ball for 19:44, and converted 2-of-15 third down chances, and even with everything going wrong, the team still fought its way back into the game late. It was a wild game, but even though the defense and special teams found a way to get back into it, the offense can’t be ignored. The passing game was awful, the running game was worse, and Robert Mavre was miserable on third downs. Miami is close to being decent, but first it has to be more consistent.
North Carolina … Bruce Carter has turned into a special punt blocker with a block against Miami last week before the three this week against Connecticut. The Tar Heel offense wasn’t anything special, but it didn’t have to be. The defense and special teams took care of things, but it’s not as if Cam Sexton and the offense didn’t do anything. Sexton was able to connect on a few big plays and Shaun Draughn ran for 109 yards and a 39-yard score. This was a nice win with Notre Dame coming to town this week.
NC State … NC State got dominated by the Boston College offense, but it was a battle throughout because Russell Wilson kept making plays. The team found ways to get back in the game in the fourth quarter, but the defense couldn’t hold. This will be the problem going forward. The offense isn’t going to special, so if the defense isn’t great, the Pack will be in trouble.
Virginia
… Where did that come from? Virginia was awful in losses to Connecticut and Duke, and all of a sudden, it came up with a ground game in the blowout win over Maryland and the defense started swarming again like it did last year. This could be the type of win that turns the whole season around, and while the next two games against East Carolina and North Carolina aren’t going to be easy, they’re at home. If QB Marc Verica keeps improving, wins are possible.
Virginia Tech Virginia Tech might have beaten Western Kentucky for its fifth straight victory, but it was hardly impressive. The Hokie offense went into the tank after getting out to a decent lead, finishing with just 293 total yards, but Tyrod Taylor wasn't bad and Sean Glennon completed all three of his passes. Chalk this 27-13 win as a case of a team letting up. Tech obviously had things in hand, even though WKU made things interesting late, but now the team has to gear it up to another level with road dates at Boston College and Florida State.
Wake Forest
… Didn’t Play This Week
