Roundup
Cincinnati
… 12
penalties, nine punts and 0-for-11 on
third downs ... and a win?! Cincinnati
is going to struggle with its
consistency for the rest of the year,
but as the Rutgers game showed, the
defense can help pick up the slack when
the offense is struggling to get going.
The offensive line had its toughest game
since the Oklahoma loss, struggling in
pass and getting nothing for the running
game. Even so, QB Chazz Anderson had a
solid, efficient game. There's no
beefing with a 5-1 start going into an
off-week.
Connecticut … Didn’t Play This
Week
Louisville …
The win over
Memphis shouldn't overshadow the
continued problems the offense is having
with its consistency and production.
Hunter Cantwell couldn't keep the chains
moving, struggling mightily on third
downs, while the running game wasn't
used enough. Victor Anderson was
excellent and Brock Bolen ran well, but
there were only 30 carries. With Middle
Tennessee up next, the team has one more
warm up before the meat of the Big East
schedule kicks in starting with South
Florida. Cantwell has to be better, and
has the Memphis game showed, Trent Guy
needs the ball in his hands more in a
variety of ways.
Pitt … Didn’t Play This Week.
Rutgers … The running game hasn't
shown up so far this season, and it's
obviously not going to be a factor all
year long. It was nowhere to be found
against Cincinnati, and Mike Teel and
the passing game couldn't pick up the
slack. It hasn't been able to get the
job done all season long. Even at 1-5,
the team has to try to make something
positive happen quickly to turn things
around. There are tough road games at
Pitt and South Florida ahead, but there
isn't any one game that's a sure-thing
loss for a team whose last three losses
have come by seven points or fewer.
South Florida … Didn’t Play This
Week
Syracuse … Syracuse had a chance
to beat West Virginia. It had several
chances. But the offense couldn’t
convert yards and drives into points,
while the defense that had been so
strong for the entire game missed on the
one big play in the final minutes when
Noel Devine tore off his big
game-clinching touchdown run. Cameron
Dantley will eventually be a strong
playmaker, but he needs receiver help..
West Virginia… Fine, so West
Virginia isn’t blowing anyone’s doors
off, but it’s on a three-game winning
streak and is 2-0 in the Big East going
into a very winnable looking game
against Auburn in two weeks. The hope is
for Pat White to be healthy by then.
Jarrett Brown is a talent, but he’s just
not providing the spark the offense
needs. Noel Devine made up for it with
his big run in the end, and the defense
did a great job, but the offense only
gained 172 yards outside of Devine’s
clinching scoring dash.
