Game of the Week
Texas 45 … Oklahoma 35
In a wildly fun game with each offense
throwing haymaker after haymaker, Texas
overcame an early 14-3 deficit thanks to
a 96-yard kickoff return for a score and
a 25-7 second half run to close out the
game. Cody Johnson ran for three short
scores and Shipley caught a two-yard
touchdown pass for the Longhorns, while
Sam Bradford threw five touchdown passes
including three to Manuel Johnson and a
52-yarder to Jermaine Gresham. The 80
combined points were the most ever in
the 103 times the two teams have played.
Big 12
Player of the Week
Baylor QB Robert Griffin completed 21-of-24
passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for a score in the
win over Iowa State, and
Texas WR Jordan Shipley caught 11 passes for 112 yards
and a touchdown, and he returned two kickoffs for 112 yards and a score in the
win over Oklahoma.

Roundup
Baylor
… Robert Griffin is a tremendous runner,
but the offense goes to another level
when he’s comfortable throwing the ball.
He picked apart the Iowa State secondary
with big plays, short throws, and
everything in between. Jay Finley is
providing a little bit of a running
game, and the defense came through with
a nice performance against the Cyclones.
With three road games in the next four,
starting at Oklahoma State, the offense
will have to ramp things up to a whole
other level. If Griffin plays like he
did this week, it’s possible.
Colorado … Cody Hawkins isn’t
getting the job done. He had a few good
moments against Kansas, but he has to be
far more accurate than 8-of-22 for 90
yards, His two interceptions weren’t a
plus, either. The team needs to be able
to rely more on the running game, but
the team only averaged 2.3 yards per
carry and had to go away from Rodney
Stewart. Next up is Kansas State, which
is a must-win for bowl hopes with a date
at Missouri to follow.
Iowa State … Did the drama over
the loss of backup quarterback Phillip
Bates matter to the team’s psyche going
into the Baylor game? Probably not all
that much, but it was still the team’s
worst overall performance of the year.
The defense didn’t do nearly enough to
throw BU QB Robert Griffin off his game,
there wasn’t any running game, and
Austen Arnaud didn’t keep the attack
moving. The 10 penalties didn’t help.
Now on a four-game losing streak, the
Cyclones have to take advantage of
winnable home games against Nebraska and
Texas A&M coming up.
Kansas … With nothing happening
in the running game, KU has to go with
Jake Sharp. He’s not the right type of
back for the KU offense, but he’s a
quick, shifty playmaker who wants to
take the ball and be a workhorse. He
showed against Colorado that he can be
effective if he’s put in the right
situations. If he’s asked to pound the
ball between the tackles, that’s not
him. Now the real schedule starts to
kick in with a trip to Oklahoma next
week followed up by a showdown against
Texas Tech.
Kansas State … Kansas State had
been slumping, and it did what it had to
do to bust out of the doldrums by coming
out roaring against Texas A&M. Josh
Freeman was razor sharp throwing the
ball, and he was unstoppable around the
goal line. The defense was hardly
anything special, and the secondary
couldn’t put the clamps down on Jerrod
Johnson and the A&M comeback attempt,
but it was still a key road win for a
team that needed something positive.
Missouri … Three Chase Daniel
interceptions, although one wasn’t his
fault, a missed field goal, a blocked
kick, and eight penalties … Mizzou could
play this game against Oklahoma State
ten times and it wouldn’t have made the
same mistakes. Give the Cowboys credit
for getting to Daniel, but Daniel also
did his part with some major screw ups
and misfires. It was as if the team was
waiting for Daniel to pull the game out
of a hat, and he couldn’t do it. As
crushing as this loss might be, things
could quickly change around with a win
at Texas next week.
Nebraska … Nebraska not only
showed some signs of life, it showed it
could play with a team as good as Texas
Tech. The Huskers outgained the Red
Raiders 471 yards to 421 and held on to
the ball for a whopping 40:12 while the
defense did a great job of keeping
Graham Harrell and the passing game from
exploding. Yeah, it was a loss, but it
was a positive loss. However, the
pressure is now on, with a three game
losing streak to bust, to beat Iowa
State and Baylor over the next two
weeks.
Oklahoma … Sam Bradford was
brilliant with 387 yards and five
touchdown passes against Texas, but he
made a few mistakes under pressure.
There weren’t may, but there were just
enough to stop some key drives to allow
the Longhorns to get back in the game.
The officials can’t be blamed for the
loss, but Sooner fans are almost
certainly going to be grouchy over some
questionable penalties and for getting
flagged 10 times for 73 yards. The loss
will gloss over a fantastic day from
Travis Lewis, who made 18 tackles and
two tackles for loss, but the defense
suffered a major blow when it lost LB
Ryan Reynolds. As soon as Reynolds went
out with a knee injury, Colt McCoy and
the Texas offense picked on the middle
of the field the rest of the day.
Oklahoma State … Welcome to the
big-time. Missouri made its share of
mistakes, but OSU did its part by
finding a pass rush for the first time
all season long. When the Tigers were
imploding, Zac Robinson and the Cowboys
were calm and cool. There were turnovers
and seven penalties, it was hardly a
clean game for OSU, but it doesn’t
matter. This was the program’s most
important win in decades.
Texas … The knock on Texas going
into the OU game was a potential lack of
playmakers compared to the diversified
Sooners. While Colt McCoy was terrific,
his supporting cast more than helped the
cause. OU finished with just 48 rushing
yards, while Chris Ogbonnaya ran for 127
of UT’s 161 yards on the ground. Jordan
Shipley and Quan Cosby were every bit as
good as the OU receivers. Defensively
the pass rush was fantastic and the run
defense was better. Now the expectations
have been upped. This is now a national
title or bust season.
Texas A&M … On the down side,
A&M’s defense was miserable yet again as
Kansas State did whatever it wanted to,
but offensively, Jerrod Johnson once
again showed why he’s the future and a
playmaker to build the program around.
Unfortunately, the running game
continues to be non-existent as Mike
Goodson and Jorvorskie Lane combined for
a mere 38 yards on nine carries. Johnson
was the ground game. With Texas Tech up
next, Johnson has to be ready for a
shootout.
Texas Tech… The offense has been
fine, but it’s lacking that certain
explosive element to put teams away. The
Red Raiders should’ve put the Nebraska
game well out of reach in the third
quarter. The running game was working
and Graham Harrell averaged an
impressive 11.4 yards per pass, but when
it came time to come up with the big
plays in the fourth quarter, the
offense, outside of Michael Crabtree,
struggled a bit. With a bad Texas A&M
defense up next, the offense has to have
everything working perfectly with the
big boys (Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma State
and Oklahoma) to follow.
