Pac 10 Game of
the Week
Stanford 24 … Arizona
23
Alex Loukas stepped in and hit a big 21-yard pass and ran for 39 yards leading
the way to a one-yard Toby Gerhart touchdown run with 25 seconds to play to tie
the score, and Aaron Zagory hit the extra point for the win. The Cardinal ran
for 286 yards with Gerhart and Anthony Kimble leading the attack, but it was the
defense that came through in the second half allowing just two Jason Bondzio
field goals. Arizona’s offense only managed one touchdown, a 25-yard Nicholas
Grigsby run, and the defense got in the act with a 75-yard interception return
for a touchdown from Nate Ness. But the offense struggled from then on as the
Cardinal outscored the Cats 17-6 over the final 31 minutes.
Pac 10
Player of the Week
Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers ran 23 times for 168
yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for seven yards in the win over
Washington State

Roundup
Arizona
… Arizona’s defense isn’t going to be a
rock, and there can’t be too much
hand-wringing over the way Stanford was
able to dominate on the offensive line,
but the Cat offense needs to be stronger
game-on-and-game-out. Willie Tuitama was
fine against the Cardinal, but he didn’t
make enough plays happen in the second
half and Nic Grigsby wasn’t able to find
the room to keep the ground game moving.
Now come the real tests against Cal and
USC, and while losing to Stanford isn’t
a plus, the defeat might mean Arizona
won’t be taken seriously.
Arizona State … USC might have
one of the nation’s best defenses, but
ASU’s offense is supposed to be
effective against everyone, no matter
what. Rudy Carpenter isn’t getting hit
like he did last year, but he’s still
struggling a bit under pressure. As much
as he’s struggling, backup Danny
Sullivan isn’t doing anything to provide
a challenge completing just 4-of-17
passes for 28 yards with two
interceptions. With a week off before
dealing with Oregon, the offense has to
come up with a few new wrinkles.
California … Didn’t Play This
Week
Oregon … Thanks to all the
quarterback issues, Oregon is going to
be hit-or-miss offensively. Jeremiah
Masoli struggled way too much throwing
against UCLA, and while his running was
able to save the day, he’ll need to be
far more efficient. The secondary
continues to be a major problem, and
it’ll likely continue to be an issue
with ASU and Cal ahead. The running game
that leads the Pac 10 has to keep on
rolling. LeGarrette Blount has the
potential to be a special runner. He
makes big things happen.
Oregon State … Everyone’s getting
fat on Washington State at the moment,
and Oregon State did its part with an
explosion to overcome a four
interception day from Lyle Moevao. The
defense was tremendous, holding Wazzu to
132 yards and 1.3 yards per carry.
Outside of Moevao’s weird day,
everything else went right, and now the
momentum needs to continue against the
relatively easy part of the schedule.
Washington, Arizona State and UCLA are
all beatable. This is when the Beavers
have to make their move.
Stanford … With Tavita Pritchard
hurt and Jason Forcier struggling, Alex
Loukas started to show why such a big
deal was made about him leading the way
to the win over Arizona. He’s a terrific
athlete, and while Pritchard was
fantastic before getting hurt, the team
might want to start building around.
However, he’ll make mistakes. The O line
was terrific against the Wildcats and
will have to keep on shining to keep
Toby Gerhart, Anthony Kimble and the
running game rolling. With UCLA and
Washington State up next, Stanford has a
realistic shot now of getting bowl
eligible. With at Oregon, USC and at Cal
to finish up, winning the next two games
could be a must.
UCLA … UCLA kept on fighting even
when Oregon kept coming up with the
plays needed to stay ahead. The problem
is a running game that’s doing next to
nothing, averaging just 1.7 yards per
carry against the Ducks. Kahlil Bell
isn’t healthy, and while he’s trying,
defenses aren’t going to give the Bruins
any room to move until Kevin Craft
starts to do more. He threw for 288
yards, Oregon’s pass defense is lousy,
but unless the drives are going for
points, they don’t matter. Next week’s
game against a solid Stanford team is a
must-win to have any bowl hopes.
USC … USC turned it over five
times and committed 10 penalties against
Arizona State, and it was still an easy
win. The Trojans aren’t going to be able
to get away with a sloppy performance
like this against Cal or even Arizona
down the road, but give credit to the
defense for not letting the Sun Devils
breathe. Mark Sanchez struggled with his
consistency and made a few too many
mistakes, but again, 28-0. If you don’t
come close to bringing your A game and
you win 28-0, you’re doing something
right.
Washington … Didn’t Play This
Week
Washington State … Oregon State
handed Washington State four turnovers,
all on interceptions, and it still
didn’t matter. The Cougars are getting
nothing, absolutely nothing, out of
Marshall Lobbestael and the passing
game. The running game isn’t a prize,
either, but this loss is on the defense.
The offense is going to struggle for a
while in a rebuilding mode, and the
defense has to pick up the slack. It
didn’t come remotely close against OSU.
12 penalties weren’t a plus. Yippee, USC
is up next.
