It's time to readjust. Remembering the rankings are based on how good the teams are at the moment, there are some wild fluctuations in this week's list. Just because you win, that doesn't mean you were impressive. Check out the latest CFN ranking of all 119 teams, and check back Sunday afternoon as WE'LL HAVE THE FIRST ANALYSIS OF THE BCS RANKINGS found anywhere.

2008 CFN Rankings - Week 9

There's one very important distinction in the CFN rankings: these are based on how good the teams are and NOT how they're going to finish.

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7
Week 8

1.
Texas (8-0)  Last Week: 1
W, Oklahoma State 28-24
next game: at Texas Tech
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the Longhorns finally looked a bit vulnerable. Colt McCoy was strong, but the offense allowed Oklahoma State to get back into the game by not closing. Even so, at the moment, it's hard to argue for anyone else as the No. 1. Beating Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State in a three-week span is as impressive as it gets.

2. Florida (6-1)  Last Week: 5
W, Kentucky 63-5
next game: vs. Georgia
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … everything is working. The defense and special teams dominated Kentucky, while the offense ripped up the SEC's No. 1 scoring defense. In the last two games, Florida has thrown up a total of 114 points on the board against LSU and Kentucky. That's not bad.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
Kentucky was all banged up and didn't have the offense to come back, or even come close, to the Gators. There's still the matter of the Ole Miss loss, but if the rankings are going by who's playing the best at the moment, Florida has to be considered for the top three. This will be confirmed or denied by Georgia next week.

3. Oklahoma (7-1)  Last Week: 2
W, at Kansas State 58-35
next game: Nebraska
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because …the offense can turn it on whenever it wants to. The passing game struggled a bit against Kansas State, so DeMarco Murray stepped up. Manuel Johnson was out hurt, and everyone else tried to pick up the slack. Basically, OU didn't play all that well, and it still hunt 58 on the board.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
the defense has decided to not play anymore. It's getting bombed on by everyone, while the special teams finally came up with a big play last week. This is hardly a complete team at the moment.

4. Alabama (8-0)  Last Week: 4
W, at Tennessee 29-9
next game: Arkansas State
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the Tide was tight against Tennessee, in a good way. The running game was efficient, John Parker Wilson threw well, and the defense didn't allow a thing. This was the team's first dominant, 60-minute performance. The win at Georgia is looking better and better.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
... don't forget about the recent battles against Ole Miss and Kentucky. The Tide got pushed way too hard by two mediocre teams. How would the team do against someone with a living, breathing high-octane attack? Georgia's offense is close, but it's not playing as well as several Big 12 offenses.

5. Penn State (9-0)   Last Week: 3
W, at Ohio State 13-6
next game: at Iowa (Nov. 8)
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the team came up with its best win of the year and falls down two spots?! No matter how it happened, beating Ohio State in Columbus is impressive. The defense was way too quick for the extremely athletic Buckeyes, however ...
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because .. ...
th
e offense struggled way too much, and we still don't know if Daryll Clark can play late in tight games. In a one game shot, could the Nittany Lions beat anyone in America? Absolutely. However, the offense needs to prove it can blow up against a good defense.

6. Oklahoma State (7-1)  Last Week: 6
L,. at Texas 28-24
next game: Iowa State
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … if anything, the ranking show go up after battling Texas nearly dead-even in Austin. How would the game have gone in Stillwater? The Cowboys ran through the No. 1 team in the country and showed that yeah, this is the real deal.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
there's no reason to be. The win over Missouri is still impressive, and the performance against Texas is strong enough to consider OSU for a top five spot. There are still chances to prove itself against Oklahoma and Texas Tech after the date with Iowa State.

7. Georgia (7-1)  Last Week: 8
W, at LSU 52-38
next game: vs. Florida
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … 52 against LSU in Baton Rouge? Forgetting that Florida destroyed the Tigers a few weeks ago, this was still an impressive, dominant performance in a hostile environment. Call this a wait-and-see ranking. Beat Florida, move into the top three.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the defense was a bit too soft against the LSU running game. The offense exploded, and the D, particularly Darryl Gamble, made big plays, but it wasn't a good enough performance to inspire a lot of confidence.

8. Texas Tech (8-0)  Last Week: 11
W, at Kansas 63-21
next game: Texas
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the team is humming at just the right time. That wasn't just a blowout over Kansas; that was an utter domination. Now comes the real test. If the Red Raiders beat Texas, they'll be No. 1.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
it shouldn't be. Tech really should be in the top five. Call this a placeholder ranking until after next week.

9. USC (6-1)  Last Week: 9
W, at Arizona 17-10
next game:
Washington
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the Trojans probably won't get a lot of credit for beating a tough, fired up Arizona on its home turf. They showed that they could win a tough road game when things aren't going all that well. The defense played a whale of a game.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the Pac 10 stinks. Really, would USC be able to hang punch for punch with all the top Big 12 and SEC teams? In a one game shot, of course, but the Trojans are far too inconsistent and aren't getting nearly enough out of their skill stars.

10. Missouri (6-2)  Last Week: 12
W, Colorado 58-0
next game: at Baylor
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the offense is rolling again. Really, who wouldn't have problems at Texas and against Oklahoma State? This still might turn out to become the Big 12 champion.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
the defense still has to prove it can play against an offense with a pulse. Shutting out Colorado, with the Big 12's worst offense, is no big whoop. If Chase Daniel isn't bombing, Missouri isn't winning.

11. Ohio State (7-2)  Last Week: 10
L, Penn State 13-6
next game: at Northwestern (Nov. 8)
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … Ohio State had its one big chance to show what it could do, and it blew it. As good as Terrelle Pryor might be, he might not be quite ready for prime time against the elite of the elite.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the offense can't find its wide receivers. The defense might be fantastic, and the running game is going to dominate the mediocre, but the offense is too inconsistent for OSU to be considered a top ten team right now.

12. LSU (5-2)  Last Week: 7
L, Georgia 52-38
next game: Tulane
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … it's hard to argue Ohio State over LSU, even with all the Tigers' problems. The ranking can't be too much higher than this after struggling so much over the past few weeks.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
what happened to the defense? It went bu-bye in the last two big games against Florida and Georgia, giving up 103 points. There aren't any takeaways and the pass rush has been minimal considering the talent level.

13. TCU (8-1) Last Week: 13
W, Wyoming 54-7
next game: at UNLV
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because …everything is working for the defense. Yeah, Wyoming might stink, but the 54-7 win was yet another dominant beat down.  Outside of the Oklahoma loss, TCU has allowed 3,7, 14, 7, 7, 7,and 7 points.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
it shouldn't be. The defense would shut down just about anyone. The offense might not be able to hang with the top ten teams, but with the way the pass rush is working, no one will want to deal with the Horned Frogs in a bowl.

14. Utah (8-0)  Last Week: 14
Didn't Play This Week
next game: at New Mexico
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … with a week off, the potential is there to go on a big run to a BCS spot. The offense is jelling, the defense is fantastic, and Louie Sakoda might be America's best kicker.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
winning at New Mexico isn't going to inspire more than a yawn. Beat TCU and BYU and then it'll be time to get excited.

15. Michigan State (7-2)  Last Week: 15
W, at Michigan 35-21
next game: Wisconsin
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … Brian Hoyer is adding more to the passing game to complement Javon Ringer. The Spartans don't control their own Rose Bowl destiny, but if they win out against Wisconsin, Purdue and at Penn State, they're going to a BCS game.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
this is a good team, but not an elite one. The best road win was against Northwestern, while the best win overall was against Iowa. Whoopee.

16. Virginia (5-3)  Last Week: 46
W, at Georgia Tech 24-17
next game: Miami
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … this is the ACC's hottest team. On a four-game winning streak, showing the ability to mount comebacks when needed, the Cavaliers are on a roll. The losses to Duke and UConn are a distant memory.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
there still isn't much offensive production. Oh sure, the team is coming through in the clutch. Is the team really this good, or is it just finding ways to get by in a bad ACC? the final four games will show the truth.

17. North Carolina (6-2)  Last Week: 47
W, Boston College 45-24
next game: Georgia Tech (Nov. 8)
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … Butch Davis's team is going to deal with growing pains, but it's explosive, athletic, and dominant when it comes to picking off passes.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the team is just as likely to lose to a Duke as it is to beat a Boston College. This is a big riser in the rankings are part of the big ACC movement, but a win over Georgia Tech in two weeks is a must to stay up here.

18. Florida State (6-1)  Last Week: 32
W, Virginia Tech
next game: Georgia Tech
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the defense is playing as well as any in the country. Everette Brown and the defensive front are destroying offenses. Virginia Tech's quarterbacks didn't have a chance.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the one really decent win was over Virginia Tech this week, and the Hokies struggled without their quarterbacks. Christian Ponder is still learning the quarterbacking ropes.

19.  Boise State (6-0)  Last Week: 19
W, at San Jose State 33-16
next game: at New Mexico State
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the team wasn't all that impressive against San Jose State. The defense is the playing at a high level, while Kellen Moore and the passing game are ultra-efficient. There are real, live receiving weapons that can play with anyone.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
it's going to be hard to generate much of a buzz with at New Mexico State, Utah State, at Idaho, at Nevada, and Fresno State to go. This might be Dick Tomey's best Spartan team yet, but that win wasn't that big a deal, like winning at LSU or Ohio State.

20. Minnesota (7-1)  Last Week: 20
W, at Purdue 17-6
next game: Northwestern
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the Gophers keep on winning, and they're doing it with defense. The offense isn't making mistakes. Now, they're through the meat of the road schedule with only Wisconsin to play away from the Dome.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
the schedule has been awful. There's no Penn State or Michigan State ... Merry Christmas. The ranking is this low because it's still hard to believe the team is really that good. The only win of note is against Illinois.

21. Georgia Tech (6-2)  Last Week: 16
L, Virginia 24-17
next game: Florida State
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the offense is just good enough to beat anyone. No one wants to prepare for it, and it takes an extremely disciplined defense to keep it in check. Virginia did a superior job.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
this is sort of a gift ranking in the jumbled up ACC world. The 10-7 win over Gardner-Webb a few weeks ago is still a bit haunting. The Yellow Jackets are still a work in progress.

22. Iowa (5-3)  Last Week: 26
Didn't Play This Week
next game: at Illinois
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the defense has been playing as well as any in the Big Ten, and now it's rested. The three losses came by a total of nine points. This is one of the nation's most intriguing under-the-radar teams. It gets to show what it can to against Illinois, Penn State and Minnesota (along with Purdue) over the final month.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
there's a question about how good the team is on the road. Beating Indiana is no big deal and there were losses to Pitt and Michigan State. The Illinois game is in Champaign.

23. Kansas (5-3)  Last Week: 23
L, Texas Tech, 63-21
next game: Kansas State
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … there's no shame in losing to Oklahoma and Texas Tech over the last two weeks. Chalk the South Florida loss up to a bad second half; this KU team really might be top 15 good, and this still might be the North representative in the Big 12 title game.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
KU hasn't actually beaten anyone with a pulse. The best win is over Colorado. At some point, the decent wins have to come. Texas and Missouri finish up the season.

24. Boston College (5-2)  Last Week: 17
L, at North Carolina 45-24
next game: Clemson
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the defense really is good, despite what North Carolina did to it.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ...
that might not have been an aberration considering the last three weeks have been a struggle.

25. Virginia Tech (5-3)  Last Week: 18
L, at Florida State 30-20
next game: Maryland (Nov. 6)
The Ranking Should Be Higher Because … the team is dead even with the rest of the ACC. The loss to Florida State wasn't that awful considering the injury issues, while the loss at Boston College was heartbreaker. If those two games were in Blacksburg, it might be a different story. Four of the last five games were on the road.
The Ranking Should Be Lower Because ..
the freefall might come if Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon are both out for a significant length of time. The Maryland game will be a nice test.

26 BYU (7-1)
27 South Carolina (5-3)
28 Tulsa (7-0)
29 Maryland (6-2)
30 Pitt (5-2)
31 Wisconsin (4-4)
