Pac 10 Game of the Week

USC 17 … Arizona 10
In a tough battle for the Trojans, Mark Sanchez threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Stanley Havili midway through the third quarter for the 17-10 lead, and the defense did the rest, hanging on time and again. Arizona had its chances in the fourth quarter, but the offense couldn’t get anything going with the Trojans forcing four punts down the stretch. Mike Thomas made it very interesting on a last-gasp punt return, but was stopped at the USC 34 as time ran out. The Trojans scored on a two-yard Stafon Johnson run in the second quarter, while the Wildcats answered with a five-yard Nic Grigsby run early in the third.

Pac 10 Player of the Week
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli completed 17-of-26 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown with an interception, and he ran eight times for 85 yards and a score in the win over Arizona State.

Conference
Roundup

Arizona … What happened to the Air Raid offense, or whatever Texas Tech, oops, er, Arizona was calling its spread-like attack? Credit USC’s defense for erasing Rob Gronkowski and Mike Thomas, allowing just 88 passing yards, but Willie Tuitama has been around too long to struggle as much as he did. The star of the show was punter Keenan Crier, who had a whale of a game pinning the Trojans deep time and again. With Washington State up next, after an off-week, the Wildcats will be bowl eligible, but it would’ve been nice to have come up with a signature win over the Trojans.
Arizona State … It’s not even that ASU isn’t winning, currently on a five-game losing streak, it’s that it isn’t even close. The defense didn’t have a prayer of slowing down the Oregon running game, while the offense was woefully ill-equipped to keep up the pace. The three turnovers didn’t help and the inability to keep drives going, and the Oregon offense off the field, was a huge problem. Rudy Carpenter is trying to make plays and he’s trying to get things going, but defense aren’t allowing anything deep and the receivers aren’t making things happen after the catch. After the trip to Oregon State, things ease up against Washington, Washington State and UCLA, so if the Sun Devils can come up with a win in Corvallis could lead to a turnaround.
California … Kevin Riley was hardly special against UCLA, but he got the job done in the fourth quarter to help put the game away. Jahvid Best showed once again that he’s one of the Pac 10’s premier difference makers, even if he isn’t 100% healthy, while Shane Vereen had a nice game, too, with 99 yards on 14 carries. The defense came up with one of its better games of the year, especially against the run, and now comes the big test against the high-powered Oregon ground attack. The defensive front has to make the plays it came up with against the Bruins.
Oregon … The running game is making up for the potential problems with the passing game. The offensive line crushed Arizona State and owned the game from the start. The Sun Devils were never in it. The coaching staff held out on the starting quarterback situation until the last second with Jeremiah Masoli getting the nod over Justin Roper, and while the passing game didn’t roll, Masoli ran well. Still tied for the Pac 10 lead, the Ducks can make a major statement if they can beat California next week. The Rose Bowl is still a possibility with a few breaks.
Oregon State … Didn’t Play This Week
Stanford … Didn’t Play This Week
UCLA … UCLA is still going to be a work in progress, especially against the better teams. There wasn’t any running game against Cal, and the four interceptions, with two pick-sixes, and the 10 penalties weren’t a plus. Kevin Craft has to be more consistent and he can’t keep making big mistakes. With USC to finish up, the Bruins have to win their next three games, Oregon State, at Washington and at Arizona State, to go to a bowl.
USC  … Is the Arizona offense that mediocre or is the USC defense really that strong? It seems to be a little bit of both. The Trojans held time and again when its own offense couldn’t put the game away. Stafon Johnson was fine, but Joe McKnight was held under wraps as the USC running game was fine, but nothing special gaining 151 yards. Mark Sanchez is an elite talent, but he tries to gun it too much; he’s fearless with that arm.
Washington … Washington is just flat-out woeful. Losing Jake Locker shouldn’t be an excuse for this part of the season. The defense wasn’t remotely close to making a key stop against Notre Dame, the offense under Ronnie Fouch didn’t go anywhere, and at times, it looked like an Irish scrimmage. With a trip to USC up next, there’s no real chance of pulling off the win, or even making it close, unless the team can come up with one thing it does well. There was nothing to build on from the loss to the Irish.
Washington State … Didn’t Play This Week
