ACC
Game of the Week
Georgia Tech 31 …
Florida State 28
Florida State appeared to be going in for the game winning score with under a
minute to play, but RB Marcus Sims got popped and he lost the ball. Georgia Tech
recovered to hang on to break a 12-game losing streak to the Noles. Jonathan
Dwyer helped Tech take a 24-10 lead with a 36-yard second quarter touchdown
dash, and he came up with what turned out to be the game-winning score on the
opening drive of the second half with a 66-yard touchdown dash. But the offense
would struggle from then on. Florida State hung around with a three-yard
Christian Ponder touchdown run to start the scoring and a four-yard pass to
Seddrick Holloway in the second, but it was D’Vontrey Richardson who sparked the
comeback late with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Preston Parker. Tech finished
343 yards of total offense with 288 coming on the ground.
ACC
Player of the Week
Georgia Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer ran 13 times for 145
yards and two touchdowns in the win over Florida State.

Roundup
Boston College
… BC needs to have a consistent
running game because the deep passing
attack isn’t there. Chris Crane wasn’t
awful against Clemson, but he didn’t
keep the chains moving and he struggled
to make the key throws when needed. Josh
Haden ran well, but he didn’t get
established with the passing game trying
to control things. However, there wasn’t
much in the way of yards after the
catch. Now on a two-game losing streak,
things don’t get much easier with Notre
Dame up next followed up by trips to
Florida State and Wake Forest.
Clemson … C.J. Spiller has become
everything for the Clemson offense.
James Davis is an NFL caliber back, and
Cullen Harper is a strong quarterback,
but without Spiller, the O falls flat.
Harper came through against Boston
College, despite throwing three
interceptions, while the defense held
firm when it absolutely had to and did a
good job of getting the BC offense off
the field. Now
the season is back on, but the momentum
has to continue against Florida State or
bowl hopes could be in trouble.
Duke … Duke got the big
game it needed from Thaddeus Lewis and
the passing game against Wake Forest,
and the defense did a nice job of
slowing down the run. But four
turnovers, including the one that sealed
the Wake win, proved to be the undoing.
While Lewis didn’t come up with enough
third down plays, he showed he can carry
the offense for stretches. There are
still chances to win two games and get
to a bowl, but this is a game that
could’ve easily been a needed win to get
closer to the six-win mark.
Florida
State … Florida State finally
got challenged by a good team, and it
blinked. There shouldn’t be too much
read into the loss to Georgia Tech with
the Marcus Sims fumble going to be the
highlight that gets replayed over and
over; this was a tough loss that should
be praised more for the Noles’ ability
to come back and make it a game. This is
still a young team trying to find its
way and trying to find the right
combination of players at the right
spots, but it’s still in the thick of
the ACC title chase and can’t screw up
now. There’s no reason to lose to a team
has flaky as Clemson is at the moment if
the FSU defense plays up to its ability.
At least it won’t be the Bowden Bowl
this week.
Georgia
Tech… It’s not luck if it
keeps happening. Georgia Tech is winning
games by the skin of its teeth, but
whether it’s Gardner-Webb or Clemson or
Florida State, the wins are coming.
At times, the
offense isn’t even pretending to have a
passing game, and why would it with
Jonathan Dwyer and the ground game
working so well, but the attack tends to
struggle for stretches against athletic
defense like FSU’s. That could be a
problem with North Carolina coming up
next and Miami to follow. Defensively,
considering all the NFL talent on the
front line, there needs to be more
production against the run.
Maryland
… Didn’t Play This Week
Miami
… Robert Marve was a gametime
call against Virginia with a leg injury,
but as it turned out, Jacory Harris
ended up saving the day with a brilliant
late drive showing cool and calm under
pressure. This wasn’t the team’s finest
hour as far as being sharp with 12
penalties for 81 yards and three
turnovers, but the running of Graig
Cooper and a good date from the defense,
holding UVa to 311 yards, made up for
it. In the end, the young Miami team
stepped up in the clutch, and Virginia
didn’t. The team is bowl eligible, so
now it’s time to use this off-week to
really concentrate on a tough finishing
kick and be in the hunt for the ACC
title.
North
Carolina … Didn’t Play This
Week
NC State
… Didn’t Play This Week
Virginia
… After losing in
rip-your-heart-out fashion against
Miami, the shoe is on the other foot for
Virginia team that has made its living
coming up with clutch wins. There just
wasn’t enough consistent offense to put
the game away, and the inability to stop
the run didn’t help. This is a dangerous
time for the Cavs. The team worked so
hard to get to this point, but at 5-4,
getting a win at Wake Forest next week
is a must to get bowl eligible with
Clemson and Virginia Tech to finish up.
Virginia
Tech … Didn’t Play This Week
Wake Forest… After the way
the Demon Deacons struggled in loses to
Maryland and Miami, they needed a win in
any way possible over Duke. The offense
continues to have problems, the running
game is struggling to find itself and
Riley Skinner remains a bit off, but the
team pulled off the win. The loss of Sam
Swank didn’t hurt in overtime as Shane
Popham came through with the key 28-yard
field goal while Alphonso Smith and the
defense that had struggled to come up
with a key stop late put it away. The
ACC title is almost certainly out of
reach, but a win over Virginia is a must
to get up higher in the bowl pecking
order, and to get bowl eligible in the
first place.
