Pac 10 Game of
the Week
Oregon State 27 …
Arizona State 25
Arizona State rallied with a three-yard Andrew Pettes touchdown catch with just
21 seconds to play, but Rudy Carpenter’s two-point conversion attempt was picked
off and Oregon State held on. Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 133 yards, but it was
Sean Canfield who came through big, stepping in for an injured Lyle Moevao, with
two short touchdown passes to Shane Morales and Sammie Stroughter. But Canfield
also threw an interception for a score, with Troy Nolan giving ASU a 13-7 lead
with a 41-yard pick six. The Beavers couldn’t pull away, but they got up eight
with a 41-yard Justin Kahut field goal late, only to have Carpenter and the Sun
Devils drive to make it close. ASU committed 10 penalties to OSU’s two.
Pac 10
Player of the Week
Stanford RB Toby Gerhart ran 22 times for 132 yards
and four touchdowns in the first half of the win over Washington State

Roundup
Arizona
… Didn’t Play This Week
Arizona State … This was supposed
to be the week the Sun Devils turned
things around, and with a good late run
against Oregon State, the chances were
there. But penalties were a problem and
pass protection was a big issue; Rudy
Carpenter didn’t get enough time to
work. Now come the breathers against
Washington and Washington State. If the
Sun Devils can beat UCLA, the showdown
against Arizona might be for a bowl.
California … Cal made a ton of
errors, Oregon made more, and Oregon’s
proved to be more costly. With five
turnovers, nine penalties, and a slew of
mistakes, Cal had a hard time putting
the game away, but the defense was able
to keep the Duck running game in check
and the secondary didn’t let much happen
through the air. Now it’ll be
interesting to see how the Bear
quarterback situation plays out. Kevin
Riley will still be the starter if
healthy, but Nate Longshore played well
enough to get the call against USC. As
long as Jahvid Best is healthy, the
Bears have a shot.
Oregon … Oregon couldn’t seem to
handle the lousy weather conditions
against Cal. There were too many slips,
too many mistakes, and no passing game
whatsoever when the Bears were able to
slow down the running game. Jeremy
Masoli was bad throwing the ball, but
Justin Roper was worse. Now that the Pac
10 title is out of reach, it’s about
trying to secure the No. 3 spot, or
maybe even the two, by winning out.
There can’t be a let down against
Stanford.
Oregon State … Jacquizz Rodgers
continues to be fantastic and the
offense moved the ball on Arizona State,
but the offense had a hard time putting
the game away and the pass rush couldn’t
stop Rudy Carpenter on the final drive.
Even so, this was still a decent win
with a trip to UCLA up next. Oregon
State controls its own destiny, but it
needs Lyle Moevao back under center. He
has a banged up shoulder and while Sean
Canfield isn’t bad, he had a great game
against ASU, he’s not Moevao.
Stanford … Stanford is one game
away from being bowl eligible. After
battling in game after game for over a
month, the team got its first true
breather with the win over Washington
State. The final three games aren’t
going to be a breeze with trips to
Oregon and California along with a home
date against USC. However, if Toby
Gerhart can get hot, and if there can be
more from the passing game that didn’t
have to show up against Wazzu, Stanford
should be able to play with anyone. This
has been a special year, and the team
appears to believe it can win any game.
UCLA … Didn’t Play This Week
USC … The Trojans are getting
more than their share of light
scrimmages, but now the truly impressive
wins have to start coming. Blowing away
Washington and Washington State mean
nothing; it’s time to beat up California
and show the world that all the great
numbers being put up by the defense
might be for real. Mark Sanchez, after
being maligned a bit after the Arizona
win, was almost perfect against
Washington, but he got ten days to
throw. Seven players ran the ball, the
backups continue to see key minutes.
Washington … Washington never had
a chance to keep it remotely close
against USC. Now that the Ty Willingham
era is close to over, it’s about
developing the talent for the next head
coach. This won’t stay the nation’s only
winless team, the Huskies are better
than Washington State, but there are
several job interviews on the line. The
new head man will go on what he’s seeing
over the final few games, and those
players who step up and fight will
likely get a
leg up.
Washington State … Four early
turnovers, and five overall, and a
blocked field goal began the demise of
Washington State in yet another abysmal
loss. Washington State isn’t finding any
silver linings in this abysmal season,
even through Kevin Lopina completed
16-of-28 passes. After losing the last
three games by a total score of 193 to
13, and with Arizona up next, the
Cougars need to find something positive,
and fast.
