Big 12 Game of the Week

Colorado 28 … Iowa State 24
Colorado hung on as Iowa State got down to the Buff one with time running out, but D.J. Dykes stopped Alexander Robinson on a final run to seal the win. After filling in for an ineffective Tyler Hansen, Cody Hawkins threw four touchdown passes including two in the final 7:05, including a five-yarder to Cody Crawford with 1:30 to play, to pull the Buffs into the lead for good. Iowa State took a 24-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter on Alexander Robinson’s second touchdown run of the game, and then Hawkins took over. Ryan Walters made 16 tackles for Colorado.

Big 12 Player of the Week
Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell completed 40-of-50 passes for 456 yards and six touchdowns in the 56-20 win over Oklahoma State

Conference
Roundup

Baylor … Baylor has become way too reliant on Robert Griffin. He’s the team’s best weapon, by far, but against a team like Texas, the offense needs several players from several places to step up and produce. That didn’t happen, and the close game in the first half turned into a blowout. There was nothing happening with the passing game, Griffin was under tremendous pressure, and while he was able to tear of a few big runs, he wasn’t able to give his defense any help by moving the chains. It’s a road game against Texas, there isn’t anything to be too upset about, but the Texas A&M game next week is winnable.
Colorado … Colorado saved its season, and possibly the Dan Hawkins era, with a few late touchdown passes from Cody Hawkins and the goal line stand to beat Iowa State. Hawkins wouldn’t have been fired with a loss, but it would be a bad sign and would’ve firmly entrenched Colorado at the bottom of the Big 12 barrel. Cody Hawkins picked a great time to come up with his best game in a long, long time, pulling the Buffs out of the fire late. The big problem continues to be the field goal kicking. CU has only hit one of ten attempts since the West Virginia game, and missed two against the Cyclones. A bowl game is still possible with a win over either Oklahoma State or Nebraska.
Iowa State  … Now we’ll get to see what kind of mental toughness Iowa State has. On a seven-game losing streak following the heartbreaking last second loss to Colorado, the bowl dream is long gone with Missouri and a trip to Kansas State to close things out. There are positive signs to take away from the loss. Austen Arnaud had a nice day and Alexander Robinson ran extremely well. However, the offense couldn’t close out the game. It was as tough a loss as they come, but an upset over Missouri would erase this week in a hurry.
Kansas … Kansas might not be anywhere near as good as it was last year, but it’s still not all that bad, even in a loss. The offensive line struggled against the Nebraska defensive front, and while QB Todd Reesing was under consistent pressure, He proved time and again how tough he is. He took shot after shot and kept coming back and making plays even when the tide had turned. Kansas will go bowling, the Big 12 has plenty of spots to fill, but the season is on the verge of quickly turning sour unless the lines don’t start playing better. On the flip side, it KU can beat Texas and/or Missouri to close out the regular season, 2008 will take on a different look.
Kansas State … Kansas State played like it normally does in the loss to Missouri, and that’s part of the reason why it’ll be looking for a new head coach. 10 penalties, little offensive balance, and no consistency on either side of the ball were all problems. To be fair, this was a jacked up Tiger team playing its final home game of the year, but the KSU offense wasn’t even close to being able to keep up the pace with Josh Freeman failing to get the passing game going while the ground game did nothing outside of the final few minutes. Even with all of the problems, the Wildcats can still go bowling by beating Nebraska and Iowa State in the final two games.
Missouri … Missouri, after a sluggish win over Baylor, stepped up and took care of business by putting away a reeling Kansas State team right away. Jeremy Maclin showed once again that he deserves to be in the discussion with Michael Crabtree and Dez Bryant as one of the Big 12’s, and nation’s, best receivers. The defense had one of its better games as Sean Weatherspoon and company swarmed all over the Wildcat ground game. The race is all but over, Missouri will be almost certain to win the North for a second straight season, so the hope has to be to beat Iowa State with ease so everyone can rest up during the off week. And then the Kansas game can be played like a preseason game. At this point, it’s all about winning the Big 12; beating Kansas might not actually matter.
Nebraska … Ndamukong Suh made himself some money against Kansas. Always considered a good talent, he was unstoppable against Kansas as the main man in the middle for the defensive front dominated throughout. Offensively, the shift has officially kicked in as Roy Helu Jr. appeared to have permanently pushed Marlon Lucky out of playing time. The coaching staff is adapting and adjusting on the fly, and it’s working. Coming off the blowout loss to Oklahoma, the Huskers regrouped and came up with their best win of the season with winnable games against Kansas State and Colorado to close. Now, just getting bowl eligible isn’t enough. A nine-win season, if Nebraska wins its bowl game, is possible.
Oklahoma … The OU offense comes out firing with Sam Bradford spreading the ball around and using all his weapons, the other team can’t keep up, and then everyone goes home. It seems so simple for the Sooners after blasting Texas A&M with the most points ever put up by a visiting team in College Station. OU got the big break with Texas Tech beating Oklahoma State, so after a week off, the battle against the Red Raiders could end up forcing a three-way tie in the South. If OU blasts Tech and Oklahoma State, it’ll probably be ranked higher than anyone in the Big 12 and would then play for the Big 12 title.
Oklahoma State … Didn’t Play This Week
Texas … Texas appeared to suffer a wee bit of an intensity hangover in the first half against Baylor, and then Ryan Palmer turned everything around with his pick six that appeared to wake the Horns up. Colt McCoy got plenty of time and produced when he had to in the second half to make the game a blowout, and the defense tightened up. Robert Griffin got his rushing yards, but the Longhorns didn’t allow anyone else to do anything. The defensive front, especially Roy Miller, did a good job of picking up the slack with Brian Orakpo out.
Texas A&M … Texas A&M simply couldn’t stop the bleeding early on against Oklahoma. As good as Jerrod Johnson might be, he couldn’t handle the pressure from the Sooner defensive front and was way too off on too many passes to keep up the pace, and the blowout was on. In a perfect world there would be some semblance of a running game to settle everything down and allow the defense time to rest, but Mike Goodson and Jorvorskie Lane combined for 15 yards on 10 carries, and the team finished with 26 rushing yards. Now the Aggies have to beat Baylor and Texas on the road to become bowl eligible.
Texas Tech… The Texas win might have been the biggest in Texas Tech history, but the win over the Oklahoma State was when everything came together. This might have been the best performance in the Mike Leach era with the quarterbacks (Taylor Potts came in late) competing 45-of-55 passes for 516 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. The team proved that there wouldn’t be a letdown after the Texas win, but now there’s a week off before going to Oklahoma. Will the consistency and explosion cool off? It’s unlikely. The team will have to be used to playing in adverse situations; Oklahoma will be certain to keep up the pace.
