Pac 10 Game of
the Week
Oregon 35 … Stanford 28
LeGarrette Blount powered his way in for a three-yard touchdown run with six
seconds to play to get by Stanford and avoid the upset. The Ducks were down one
when they went on the final march, helped by a 25-yard scramble from Jeremiah
Masoli, and closed it out with the run and a two-point conversion. Blount tore
off a 38-yard run in the third quarter for a 27-20 Duck lead, but Stanford got a
safety and a three-yard Anthony Kimble touchdown run for a late lead. In the
rain, Oregon turned it over four times, Stanford once.
Pac 10
Player of the Week
Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers ran 31 times for 144
yards and a touchdown, and caught three passes for eight yards and a score in
the win over UCLA.

Roundup
Arizona
… Is there any reason to worry that the
defense had a few problems with
Washington State? The running game ran
like there wasn’t anyone trying to stop
it, while Willie Tuitama did a decent
job considering he wasn’t needed all
that often. No matter how it happened,
Arizona is now bowl eligible under Mike
Stoops, a huge accomplishment
considering how rough the last few
seasons have been. Getting to six wins
was nice, but now it’s time to make a
statement against Oregon and/or Oregon
State.
Arizona State … Arizona State
needed an easy win to pull up out of the
six-game nosedive, and it didn’t get
one. However, having to battle against
Washington might not have been the worst
thing in the world. Rudy Carpenter
showed he could lead the offense in the
fourth quarter to pull away from a bad
team, while Keegan Herring and the
running game were strong. However, to
blow past Washington State and UCLA over
the next two weeks, the penalties have
to slow down and there has to be more
consistency. ASU has a real chance to be
5-6 going into the Arizona game with a
shot at a bowl bid.
California … Cal didn’t get the
offense moving with Nate Longshore under
center against USC, and although he was
accurate, he was a sitting duck. Kevin
Riley, concussion and all, didn’t do
much better completing just 4-of-16
passes for 59 yards with an
interception. The running game never got
any room to move. Jahvid Best is deadly
in space, but he never got into the
clear. While the loss might have been a
setback, the No. 2 spot in the Pac 10 is
still up for grabs. If the Bears can
beat Oregon State next week, they have a
shot.
Oregon … Oregon should have a big
advantage playing in the rain, it should
be used to it, but it seems to struggle
in poor weather. No matter, the Ducks
overcame the four turnovers against
Stanford and
came through clutch when needed.
Jeremiah Masoli might not have done too
much through the air, but he kept things
moving with his legs when he had to
late. The Ducks aren’t going to win the
Pac 10, but they’re still alive for the
No. 2 slot and the Holiday Bowl. First
they have to beat Arizona and Oregon
State, and they’re going to have to show
more of a passing game to win those two.
Oregon State … Oregon State
remains alive and well for the Rose Bowl
needing to beat Cal, Arizona and Oregon
to get in. That’s not that bad a task.
The offense might not be humming
smoothly, at least it didn’t in the
first half against UCLA, but the Beavers
have as many weapons as anyone in the
league outside of USC. Jacquizz Rodgers
continues to amaze as he’s being a
workhorse as well as a major playmaker.
The emergence of Sean Canfield as a
steady pass has helped. He’s not making
the big mistakes Beaver quarterbacks are
known for coming up with.
Stanford … If Stanford doesn’t go
to a bowl game, it’ll point to the final
drive against Oregon when the D couldn’t
come up with the big stop needed to save
the day. Tavita Pritchard didn’t push
the ball down the field much, but he
came up with a decent, effective day to
balance out a great effort from Anthony
Kimble on the ground. With USC and
California to go, a win over either one
would be a sweet moment for the Jim
Harbaugh era regardless of the bowl
implications. However, this is no longer
a little-engine-that-could team. The
Cardinal can play.
UCLA … UCLA should be getting
better as the season goes on, but the
offense is still sputtering on third
downs, there are still too many
penalties, and the running game still
isn’t working. Injuries and suspensions
turned out to be a killer against Oregon
State, but the team held up for a half.
The lack of offensive production helped
the roof to cave in as the game went on,
and to get back on the winning track,
the D will need more of a break. Kevin
Craft has to figure out how to make a
third down throw.
USC … Basically, if you’re a
non-running quarterback, you’re going to
get beaten up by USC. Actually,
everyone’s getting beaten up by USC,
which is playing some of the
hardest-hitting, most physical defense
of the Pete Carroll era.
While the pass
rush did a good job of providing
consistent pressure on the Cal
quarterbacks, the real key was the play
of the back seven. Taylor Mays was
killing the Bear receivers. The offense
was fine, but it’s still not quite
special yet. Will this win bring the
respect to show that USC belongs in the
national title discussion? Not really.
Washington … Washington at least
is trying to make this all a little bit
of fun. Head coach Ty Willingham emptied
the playbook against Arizona State, and
Ronnie Fauch wasn’t afraid to start
bombing away deep, but it didn’t matter.
The Sun Devils came through with decent
drive after decent drive late with a
good offensive balance to get the win.
The Huskies get it a little bit easier
over the next two week against UCLA and
Washington State.
Those two
offense shouldn’t be able to produce too
much on the UW defense as long as the
Husky offense doesn’t start turning the
ball like it did against ASU.
Washington State … On the plus
side, Washington State actually scored a
little bit and was competitive for about
20 minutes against Arizona. On the down
side, the defense isn’t even close to
coming up with
a meaningful stop. The defensive front
is having a nightmare of a time against
the run, Arizona did whatever it wanted
to, and the offense can’t keep up the
pace. At this point, anyone with a
helmet will hang 50 on the Cougars, so
getting more out of the offense for a
full sixty minutes is a must to avoid
further embarrassment against Arizona
State and Washington.
