ACC
Game of the Week
Miami 16 ... Virginia
Tech 14
Miami's defense came up with six sacks and Matt Bosher hit three field goals in
the tight battle. The Canes, who also got a three-yard touchdown run from
Javarrais James, seemed to have things well in hand, but Virginia Tech's Tyrod
Taylor ran for his second score of the game with 3:28 to play to pull the team
within two. The Hokies got the ball back, but the Miami D stuffed the Hokies on
three straight plays before a sack of Taylor to end the drama. Virginia Tech
gained 250 yards of total offense to Miami's 247.
ACC
Player of the Week
Clemson RB C.J. Spiller ran 10 times for 71 yards and
a touchdown, and caught seven passes for 108 yards and a score in the win over
Duke.

Conference
Roundup
Boston College
… Now where does BC stand in the ACC
title chase? After bouncing back from
the rough losses to North Carolina and
Clemson with wins over Notre Dame and
Florida State, the Eagles are back on
track going into key games against Wake
Forest and Maryland.
If they win those two games, they’ll be
playing for the ACC title. The defense
did the job against the FSU running
game, while the secondary gave the
depleted FSU receiving corps problems.
QB Chris Crane bounced back from a rough
day against Notre Dame to had a decent
outing.
Clemson … Playing Duke cures a
lot of ills. Clemson wasn’t perfect
against the Blue Devils, but it was
close. Cullen Harper played one of his
best games of the year, while C.J.
Spiller showed once again why he’s one
of the nation’s premier all-around
weapons. A win like this might not spark
an overall turnaround and it might not
change the outlook on the season, but
for a team that was struggling so badly
over the previous few weeks, it was an
important win with Virginia and South
Carolina to close.
Duke
… Thaddeus Lewis got knocked out of
the game against Clemson and the offense
failed to do anything. The defense
wasn’t a prize, especially against the
pass, as C.J. Spiller and Willy Korn
completed just about everything they
threw. This was one of those games when
having a steady running game would’ve
helped, but there wasn’t one with just
83 yards and 32 of them coming from
Asack. The Blue Devils need to beat
Virginia Tech and North Carolina to
become bowl eligible.
Florida
State … While the Noles might
blame the loss against Boston College on
losing a few receivers to suspension,
they still had Greg Carr and they still
had Preston Parker. The weapons were
there to beat BC, but Christian Ponder
had a lousy day. The running game was
worse as punter Graham Gano was the
leading rusher; BC bottled up Antone
Smith for 19 yards on 10 carries. While
the Noles don’t control their own
destiny, they can stay alive in the ACC
race by beating Maryland. That might be
a key game for conference play, but the
home date against Florida will be the
big one. Win that, and all of a sudden
Florida State football is on the map
going into next year.
Georgia
Tech… Didn’t Play This Week
Maryland
… Just when it seemed like
Maryland was going to bow out of the ACC
title hunt, it goes off and stuns North
Carolina to get right back in it. The
defense did a phenomenal job of keeping
the Tar Heels under wraps, especially in
the second half, while Chris Turner came
up with his best drive as a Terp taking
the offense to the winning score. Now
the momentum has to carry over against
Florida State and Boston College. Win
those two, play for the ACC title, have
a shot for the BCS … it’s that easy.
Miami … The win over
Virginia Tech might not have turned a
corner for the program, but it showed
tremendous progress. Now on a five-game
winning steak, the Canes have a shot at
the ACC title by winning their final two
games, or at least splitting and getting
some help. Robert Marve did a good job
of keeping the offense viable, even if
too many drives finished with field
goals instead of touchdowns. The defense
was suffocating as Marcus Robinson and
the pass rush were all over Tyrod Taylor
all game long. Up next will be road
trips to Georgia Tech and NC State, and
the defense will have to play even
faster to stop both teams' running
games.
North
Carolina … For all the
athleticism and all the strong young
talent UNC has amassed, it can’t come up
with the consistent drives when needed
because the running game has been no so
poor. With just 75 yards against
Maryland, there wasn’t any big drive to
get any momentum, while going 1-of-11 on
third downs didn’t help. The ACC title
could still be there for the taking by
winning out and getting a little help.
This night not be the last time the Tar
Heels and Terps meet.
NC State
… Is NC State making a late
season surge for a bowl bid? That might
be asking for too much needing to beat
North Carolina and Miami over the final
two weeks pull it off, but at the very
least the team is playing night-and-day
better over the second half of the
season than it did in the first. Russell
Wilson appears to be a keeper as he
carried the offense for a key stretch,
while the defense came up big when it
had to. The defense has come up with two
great performances in a row at just the
right time.
Virginia
… Didn’t Play This Week
Virginia
Tech … Virginia
Tech managed to stay alive against Miami
even when nothing was going well. There
were dropped pass on potential big
plays, no production from RB Darren
Evans, and the offensive line got
destroyed by the Miami defensive front.
However, Tyrod Taylor had a fantastic
day trying to keep the game alive. His
stats might not have been great, but he
was under constant pressure and didn't
have much room to move. Even with the
big loss, the Hokies aren't out of the
ACC race quite yet after having beaten
North Carolina and Georgia Tech earlier
in the year. With Duke and Virginia at
home to finish up, 8-4 is a possibility,
and now the team needs a ton of help to
have a shot to defend its ACC crown.
Wake Forest… Wake Forest
just can’t put it all together. Just
when it seemed like it was ready to make
a big run, it couldn’t handle NC State’s
Russell Wilson and the
offense
couldn’t put together any significant
drives. Riley Skinner struggled to
loosen up the State D; WR D.J. Boldin
did that with his fantastic touchdown
pass. With home games against Boston
College and Vanderbilt to close, Wake
needs to win one of the two to move up
in the bowl pecking order, but to do
that, it’ll have to find a new offensive
wrinkle, particularly on the ground.
