Big East Game of the Week

Cincinnati 28 … Louisville 20
Dominick Goodman caught a 23-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter and John Goebel ran for a six-yard score in the fourth as Cincinnati came back to beat the Cardinals. Louisville got a three-yard touchdown run from Victor Anderson in the second and a two-yard James Bryant catch in the first, but the offense was stuffed late on a last-gasp drive and only managed a 23-yard Ryan Payne field goal in the second half. Mardy Gilyard started out the scoring for the Bearcats with a 48-yard catch on the opening drive.

Big East Player of the Week
Rutgers QB Mike Teel completed 18-of-29 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions, and he ran for a score in the win over South Florida.

Conference
Roundup

Cincinnati … After getting beaten up over the last few years in the rivalry game against the Cardinals, UC came through with a big win to establish itself as the leader in the Big East pack. The BCS spot is there for the taking by winning out, and if it get the steady production from Tony Pike and the passing game, and the defense can hold up like it did in the second half against the Cardinals, the chances are good for the big game. It would be nice to start generating more of a pass rush, but that’s nitpicking after a good win like this.
Connecticut … UConn might have blown away Syracuse, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t problems. There was next to nothing from Tyler Lorenzen and the passing game, and the running game was inconsistent beyond a 50-yard run from Jordan Todman and a 49-yard dash from Donald Brown. The defense didn’t allow a thing from the SU passing game, getting off the field time and again with a third down stop. UConn might not be pretty, and it’s rarely consistent, but it’s 7-3 with big games against South Florida and Pitt to come. Win those two, hope for a Cincinnati loss, and hope for the best in the hunt for the Big East title.
Louisville … Hunter Cantwell threw well enough against Cincinnati, completing 19-of-35 passes for 204 yards, but he didn’t lead the team to any big drives in the second half and he didn’t change the game when he had the chance. The running game has been decent, but nothing special. Overall, the Cardinals played a decent game against UC, but the O failed to come through late. Now UofL needs to beat either West Virginia or a hot Rutgers team to go bowling.
Pitt … Didn’t Play This Week.
Rutgers … On a terrific four-game winning streak to save a dying season, Rutgers has cranked up the offense, has gotten good aggressiveness and intensity from the defense, and overall, the team is clicking at just the right time. QB Mike Teel is playing like a Big East Offensive Player of the Year, but his line deserves credit for doing a good job in pass protection. After destroying South Florida in Tampa, the team has to focus on Army and not get too puffy-chested. There’s still plenty of work to be done, Rutgers still has to get bowl eligible and it doesn’t want to go into an off-week before facing Louisville worrying about getting the sixth win.
South Florida … Does anyone struggle with negative momentum more than South Florida? The Bulls were in the game against Rutgers, but turnovers, missed tackles, and generally sloppy play made it a blowout. A bowl game isn’t a sure thing at this point, even though the team is eligible. If they keep playing as poorly as they have over the last few weeks, and if they get blasted by Connecticut next week with West Virginia still to play, Step one might be to get the ground game working to provide some semblance of consistency. Matt Grothe is great, but he can’t do it all.

Syracuse … And that’s it for the Greg Robinson era. His firing wasn’t a shock, but after the way the team struggled so much against Connecticut, it showed just how many problems there have been all the way around. The SU quarterbacks combined to complete 6-of-23 passes for just 51 yards with three interceptions, and the running game couldn’t pick up the slack. When you convert 1-of-14 third down chances, you’re not going to win much. On the plus side, the defense wasn’t bad against the Huskies, especially against the pass. But everything else didn’t work. There are still two dates with Notre Dame and Cincinnati to close things out.
West Virginia… Didn’t Play This Week
