Pac 10 Game of
the Week
Oregon 55 … Arizona 45
In a wild shootout with 1,031 yards of total offense, and 626 of it coming on
the ground, Oregon got out to a 48-17 lead helped by two touchdown passes from
Jeremiah Masoli, who also ran for scores from 66, 5 and 6 yards out. Patrick
Chung returned a Willie Tuitama pass 31 yards for a Duck TD, Terence Scott
caught a 44-yard touchdown pass, and Jeffrey Maehl took a pass 65 yards for a
touchdown as Oregon appeared to be cruising to an easy win. And then Arizona
made things interesting scoring 28 straight points, helped by three Keola
Antolin touchdown runs, to pull within three, but LeGarrette Blount was finally
able to put it was for the Duke with a 40-yard scoring dash. Arizona held on to
the ball for 41:46.
Pac 10
Player of the Week
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli competed 21-of-26 passes for
298 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 10 times for 89 yards and three
touchdowns in the win over Arizona.

Roundup
Arizona
… The loss to Oregon was almost like a
basketball team that uses all of its
energy in the comeback, but doesn’t have
anything left in the tank to get over
the hump. Arizona was tremendous and
breathtaking in the way it was able to
make a huge second half comeback, but
the offense stalled late in the fourth
quarter and now the Cats will have to
try to get their season back on track by
ruining Oregon State’s dream. The
defensive front got ripped up by the
Oregon running game; OSU star Jacquizz
Rodgers will be licking his chops when
he looks at the game film. Far too often
the Arizona defensive back seven didn’t
come up with the right angle or the big
play, but the intensity should crank up
a bit on both sides of the ball over the
next few weeks,
Arizona State … ASU kept its bowl
hopes alive with a blowout win over
Washington State, but it was a bit more
of a fight than the team might have
liked. 10 penalties for 104 yards killed
the team’s momentum, but Rudy Carpenter
and the passing game did enough to get
by. To beat UCLA and Arizona for bowl
eligibility, the Sun Devils need to be
more consistent and they need to get
more from the offensive line. The pass
protection wasn’t awful against Wazzu,
but it wasn’t a brick wall.
California … Cal’s offense has
sputtered at the wrong time. It
struggled against USC, but that was to
be expected. It couldn’t get over the
hump against Oregon State and didn’t do
anything consistently after the big
Jahvid Best touchdown run. That the one
other play that worked was a trick play
goes to show just how desperate the team
is for points; there isn’t any
consistency. Even with all the issues,
if the Bears can beat Stanford they’ll
get Washington to close out and that
would mean an eight-win regular season.
That’s not too bad for a team that had
as many issues as this one.
Oregon … Oregon appeared to have
found something in Jerermiah Masoli, who
showed against Arizona that he really
might be the type of playmaker to carry
the team into the future. He did a
little of everything right except for
closing out the game. Everything worked
for the Duck offense in the first half,
but even so, there’s no reason to not be
giving LeGarrette Blount the ball more.
He manages to come up with the really
big play every other time he touches the
ball. Now the team gets two weeks off
before the Civil War showdown against
Oregon State, and if the Beavers can
beat Arizona, the battle in Corvallis
will be, for Oregon, a chance to be the
spoiler. A ten-win season is still on
the radar needing to beat OSU and to win
the bowl game.
Oregon State … Oregon State is
still in it, and this might have been
its biggest test down the stretch. Cal
might not be dominant, but it was
supposed to give Oregon State all it
could handle. It did. James and Jacquizz
Rodgers continue to amaze on OSU’s
current five-game winning streak, while
Lye Moevao had a not-that-bad outing as
he didn’t make many bad plays. He threw
the one interception that didn’t turn
out to be a killer. Now it’s on to
Arizona to hope to come away with the
win before hosting Eugene. If the
defense plays like it did against Cal,
the Beavers might be in Pasadena.
Stanford … Stanford certainly
puts forth the effort for a full four
quarters, but the offense got too
little, too late against USC. On the
flip side, USC is shutting down everyone
and the Cardinal was able to roll up 202
rushing yards thanks mostly to Toby
Gerhart. The defense got steamrolled
over in the second half as it didn’t
have any answers for the vast array of
Trojan weapons. Now it’ll take a win
over Cal to be bowl eligible, and for
that to happen, QB Tavita Pritchard has
to do more to take the pressure off the
running game. Gerhart can’t do
everything.
UCLA … You think Rick Neuheisel
wanted this win over Washington? The
former Husky head coach who was canned
because of the scandal involving an NCAA
tournament pool (which later resulted in
a lawsuit that Neheisel won) seemed to
be extra involved in a win over the
awful Dawgs. The defense shut down the
UW passing game and was never threatened
after the first quarter, but it didn’t
help that QB Kevin Craft isn’t getting
any better. He threw three interceptions
and is still not quite reading things
the right way. He has one game to get
sharper, a date at Arizona State, before
dealing with the USC defense.
USC … USC’s offense had way too
many weapons for Stanford. After a
sluggish first half, the running game
got rolling as it pounded out scoring
drive after scoring drive, but for the
first time all year, the run defense
looked vulnerable as Toby Gerhart
pounded his way to a big day. This
turned into a blowout win, but there
will still be questions about the USC
offense’s ability to keep up with the
better teams. Could the Trojans keep
pace with a team like Oklahoma or
Florida? It’s possible it’ll at least
take blowout wins over Notre Dame and
UCLA to get
within range.
Washington … Washington keeps
getting worse and worse. Yes, Ty
Willingham is a lame duck and injuries
have been an issue, but that doesn’t
mean the Huskies
should only be coming up with 135 yards
against UCLA. The passing game is a
total mess, with Ronnie Fouch only
throwing for 39 yards, and the five
turnovers didn’t help. As awful as the
season has been, and even though the
program is on a 12-game losing streak,
Washington State is up next.
Washington State … Wazzu isn’t
finding anything it can count on.
Against Arizona State, the offense
didn’t come up with any sort of passing
game averaging just 4.1 yards per throw,
while the running game gained seven
yards. Sacks were a problem as the
offensive line didn’t do much of
anything to keep the quarterbacks clean,
and there wasn’t any push for the ground
game. Fortunately, as bad as the season
has been, the Cougars get their shot at
a real, live win with the Apple Cup
coming up against Washington. If nothing
else, finishing up with a trip to Hawaii
isn’t a bad thing.
