Knoxville, TN – The early Wednesday news reports coming out of Knoxville were that Tennessee has hired Lane Kiffin. UT had denied the accuracy of the statements and news stories were quickly retracted.

By Friday those rumors are now regaining momentum. Multiple sources are stating Lane Kiffin will be named the Vols Coach this upcoming week.

The 33 year old Kiffin has coached as an assistant at both Fresno State and Southern Cal from 1997 to 2001. In 2005 Kiffin took over the Trojan offense as offensive coordinator through 2006.

Kiffin then went to the Oakland Raiders as head coach, but had troubles with owner Al Davis. He was released several weeks ago and has been a hot name commodity since.

Kiffin had interviewed for the Clemson job, but the Tennessee coaching job is the number one job in America says FOX SportsSouth and ESPN polls.

An ESPN Poll on the top job in the nation saw Tennessee with 83% of the vote over an expected release of Charlie Weiss - Notre Dame, Washington and Clemson vacancies.

Names circulating to be joining Kiffin in Knoxville are his father Monte of the Tampa Bay Buccaneer's and Ed Orgeron of the New Orleans Saints, via Ole Miss and Southern Cal.

It is expected that UT will not hold a press conference until departing Phillip Fulmer has finished his coaching career on Saturday night. AD Mike Hamilton said weeks earlier he wanted to give Fulmer the respect he deserves until the season is completed.

On Wednesday, University of Tennessee public relations director Tiffany Utsman Carpenter said the search is still ongoing and no offer has been made.
