Tennessee sophomore Eric Berry and Florida junior Tim Tebow have been named the Southeastern Conferences players of the year by the Associated Press.

Berry was Defensive Player of the Year, and Tebow the Offensive Player of the Year.

Berry is one of just five sophomores to be named first-team All-SEC, while Tebow is one of thirteen juniors named to the team. Both players exemplified all the good in college football in 2008.

Berry is tied for the national lead with seven interceptions and also broke UT and SEC records for interception return yards in a season with a 265 total.

His 222 interception return yards from 2007 allowed him to also take possession of the UT and SEC career records in that category.

He enters next season just 14 yards shy of the major college career record of 501 interception return yards set by Florida State's Terrell Buckley from 1989-91.

The Fairburn, Ga., native finished the 2008 season third on the UT team with 72 tackles while breaking up six passes in addition to his seven picks. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns and also posted 8.5 tackles for loss.

Berry has already had All-American honors bestowed upon him by the AFCA, was just one of four sophomores named to that team last week.

Tebow was once again Mr. Everything for Florida in 2008. Superman flew high and far as he is now put his team in a 2nd national title game in three seasons.

The Heisman winner is a favorite this week to take a 2nd trophy back to Gainesville.

Behind Tebow, the 2008 SEC Football Champions were first in Total Offense, first in Scoring Offense, first in Passing Efficiency, first in 1st Downs among all 12 teams.

The Heisman candidate finished the season with 2,299 passing yards and added another 507 yards running the football. Tebow added 72 points for his team by scoring 12 touchdowns.

Both players will return next season to lead their respective teams for yet another season of SEC Football that was dominated with junior and sophomore play-makers.

Out of the twenty five players selected, only six seniors were named 1st team, that will depart in 2008-09.
