Monte Kiffin will be coaching in Knoxville this spring - officially. The longtime defensive coordinator has told the Tampa Bay Buccaneer's of his official decision. "I made the decision last weekend and I went back and forth," said the Buc's longtime coach.

The longtime NFL coordinator said, "It was a very, very hard decision because of players, our fans. When you've been in a place since 1996, you don't just jump ship."

Kiffin informed the Buccaneers on Wednesday he could not overlook the chance to coach with his son. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the family.

"It boiled down to one thing, it was your son, and that's what it is," Kiffin said. It was known the father-son duo hoped they could work together.

"I addressed it Wednesday. I told (GM) Bruce (Allen). Jon (Gruden) was the first person I told. The head coach, he should know first.

I told the defensive staff before I went downstairs at a quarter 'til 4. We had a team meeting at 4 o'clock and the whole team was there."

The announcement shores up an already strong class of defensive players headed to Tennessee to play college ball. The Vols should be a tenacious and nasty unit under his leadership right off the bat.

Finishing number four in the nation in total defense for '08, finds that there is still a lot build with currently in place. The Volunteers had only gave up 263.5 yards per game this season.

Coaching All-American Eric Berry will be an added plus for the senior Kiffin in his first year in Knoxville. Berry noted he was excited at the Orlando, FL Football Awards Show on Thursday and that he looked forward to it.

Kiffin will draw players, and if you're going to win championships, it all starts on the defensive side of the football. The Vols had noted defensive recruits take visits this week-end.

Kiffin played both sides of the ball for Nebraska from 1959-63 at tackle. He then went to the CFL with Winnipeg, returned to Nebraska as a defensive coach later.

From there he made stops at Arkansas in '77, and became head coach at NC State in 1980. He moved the NFL three years later coaching at Green Bay, Minnesota (twice), Buffalo, NY Jets and New Orleans.

In 1996 he became the defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay. He had been offered the head coaching job in San Francisco before the Buc's had won the Super Bowl in 2003.

Kiffin is responsible to the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, which is a standard in the game today. Kiffin prefers to use speed in his defense, likes using one formation to shadow and run numerous schemes from.

He is red zone intolerant, which will become the "orange zone" intolerance when the Buccaneer's season concludes. Kiffin is known as a master at teaching ball stripping techniques to players.

Kiffin likes using big quick linemen up front, who can move on their feet to break away from opposing offensive lineman's grasps. He likes to send players to break up specific plays with special calls, has had great success doing that.
