Best
Golden Eagle Bowl Moment:
TCU entered the 2000 Mobile Alabama Bowl with the nation’s No. 1
defense, top rusher in LaDainian Tomlinson, and a nifty 10-1 record.
The Horned Frogs left the Heart of Dixie with their second blemish.
Southern Miss rallied in the fourth quarter to stun the TCU 28-21
when Jeff Kelly found Kenneth Johnson for the game-winning touchdown
with eight ticks left in the game.
Best Trojan Bowl Moment: In its brief stay in the FBS, Troy
has split its two bowl appearances, losing to Northern Illinois in
the 2004 Silicon Valley Bowl and routing Rice in the 2006 New
Orleans Bowl. As was the case throughout the season, QB Omar
Haugabook was the headliner for the Trojans, accounting for 319
total yards and five touchdowns.
The Last Time You'll See ...
Southern Miss:
TE Shawn Nelson. Nelson’s outstanding career as one of the game’s
premier pass-catching tight ends is coming to an end. He’ll begin
the New Orleans Bowl with 120 catches for 1,498 yards, and 11
touchdowns. A big target with the speed to stretch the secondary,
you’ll be able to catch Nelson’s act on Sundays beginning next year.
Troy:
FS Sherrod Martin. Finally healthy for an entire season, Martin got
a chance to put all of his potential on display. And he has
delivered, making 80 tackles and four interceptions, while
attracting the attention of NFL scouts. Martin has received a
coveted invite to the Senior Bowl, where he’ll be asked to play some
corner as well as safety.
Breakout Player ...
Southern Miss:
LB Korey Williams. Before getting his jaw broken in an off-field
altercation, Williams was beginning to look like the next big thing
in a Southern Miss linebacker. In the first four games of his
career, the redshirt freshman had 21 tackles and four tackles for
loss, including nine solos in a loss to Marshall. Although he hasn’t
suited up since, the Eagles are hoping to see him in pads one more
time before spring practice.
Troy: QB Levi Brown. Brown is one of those feel-good Sun Belt
stories that usually only gets told this time of year. A walk-on
transfer from Richmond, he took over for injured starter Jamie
Hampton in October and threw 14 touchdown passes to a mere three
picks. Once Hampton recovers from his ACL tear, the Trojans will be
faced with a good old fashioned quarterback battle in 2009.
