Lane Kiffin has nearly assembled his coaching staff in Knoxville. The Vols new head coach has introduced his father Monte on Friday as the official defensive coordinator to the gathered media.

Monte Kiffin was the longest tenured defensive coordinator in the NFL at 26 years and as developer of the Tampa Cover 2 defense, is generally considered one of the modern era's best defensive minds.

"As a coach with a background in offense, it was imperative for us to find the best defensive coordinator we could," head coach Lane Kiffin said.

"We feel we got the best defensive coach at any level. The addition of Coach Kiffin not only puts us in position to play great defense, but also gives us the ability to sign the best defensive players in the nation if they want to prepare for the NFL every year they are here."

Kiffin now returns to the collegiate ranks at Tennessee, where, in fact, he previously considered a position with the Vols under then head coach Johnny Majors.

"I was last here in 1983 when I was under consideration for the defensive coordinator's job," Kiffin said.

"I chose instead the Green Bay Packers to start my NFL career, but this was an impressive place. Now that I'm back 25 years later, it's bigger and even more amazing than I remember.

"It is more than just the facilities, though. I felt it when I arrived at the airport and no one even knew who I was. I could just feel what it means here to be a Tennessee Volunteer.

I've never coached when there have been 102,000 fans watching us play. And what's really great is these 102,000 fans will be Tennessee fans and this will be our home field. I can't wait."

Ed Orgeron Added As D-Line Coach

When news broke that the LSU Tigers were interested in Orgeron, Monte and Lane Kiffin bolted for the airport to make sure that door was going to be sealed off totally.

It also circumvents the reason John Chavis' name reticulated once again on Monday when the Kiffin's claimed Ed was their man. Chavis is all LSU can do at this point.

"I'm so excited," Orgeron said Wednesday night. "I get to coach with Monte and I'm getting to recruit again. It's pedal to the metal, and I can't wait to get up there."

Orgeron had last visited Tennessee in 2005, as the head coach of Ole Miss.

The former Rebel head coach was a highly renowned recruiter at Southern Cal with Pete Carroll and at Miami in the Hurricane's hay days of Big East Football.

Orgeron has two national championship rings from Miami in 1989 and 1991. He has two more national championship rings from Southern Cal in 2003 and 2004 in his collegiate trophy case.

He has a strong prominence in his home state of Louisiana and was able to pull recruits from both LSU and Tennessee while head coach at Ole Miss.

Jim Chaney Hiring Not Yet Confirmed

The fans know it, the St. Louis press released it, but there is still no official word from the UT Athletic Dept. in Knoxville that Kiffin has now hired the Rams TE coach and the former offensive coordinator from Purdue.

Chaney coached in the college ranks at Purdue from 1998 through 2005 as offensive coordinator, and coached Drew Brees. Chaney came to Purdue from Wyoming, where he coached from 1993-96.

During the course, the Boilermakers led the Big Ten in passing offense five times and were also ranked in the top 10 in the nation in total offense six times.

Brees was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, a Heisman Trophy finalist, who earned All-America honors, leading the nation in total offense with 349.1 yards a game.

The rebirth of Tennessee Football is well under way. In less than 1 month the Vols are putting together a powerhouse coaching staff like no other in the history of the tradition rich program.

To date the Vols have also hired David Reaves from South Carolina and James Cregg from the Oakland Raiders. There are only a couple of spots left to fill for Kiffin, who is working steadily recruiting and hiring.

Since his hiring, Kiffin has been in 18 states visiting players in less than 30 days time.
