CFN 2008 ACC Player of the Year

Mark Herzlich, LB Boston College
Entering the season, Brian Toal was the big name at linebacker for Boston College. Herzlich wound up surpassing Toal and a deep field of qualified contenders in the ACC to be this season’s Defensive Player of the Year. He is, by many measures, the ideal linebacker, who can defend the pass as well as the run. Not only does Herzlich lead the Eagles with 105 tackles, but he’s also picked off six passes, taking two back for touchdowns.

Offensive Player of the Year – Jonathan Dwyer, RB Georgia Tech
Whatever concerns Dwyer had before the year about the installation of a new offense are long gone. He’s been an ideal B-back, or feature runner, in Paul Johnson’s triple-option. A 228-pound battering ram with enough wiggle to make people miss in the open field, he’s rumbled for an ACC-best 1,328 yards and 12 touchdowns on just 190 carries. For such a big and powerful back, his average of seven yards a carry is almost unfair to opposing defenses.
