Richard Samuel, who rose to number two on the Georgia depth chart at tailback during the 2008 season, will miss spring practice after undergoing surgery Wednesday on his left wrist. Samuel injured the wrist in the Bulldogs' Capital One Bowl victory over the Michigan State Spartans. He is expected to fully recover and be 100 percent in time for fall practice. Samuel is widely regarded as the top candidate to replace the recently-departed Knowshon Moreno, who is one of 46 underclassmen who declared early for the NFL Draft in April. As a freshman, Samuel carried the ball 26 times for 133 yards and a touchdown last season. Because of the injury, rising-sophomore Caleb King will be the only Bulldog participating in spring practice that carried the ball last season. King, who was an all-everything recruit two years ago, saw his playing time as Moreno’s backup diminish last year, as Samuel emerged late in the season. The news of Samuel’s injury continues the injury trend that has marred the Bulldogs over the last year. Fifteen Bulldogs will miss spring practice recovering from various injuries. During the 2008 season, Georgia lost 19 scholarship players to season-ending injuries, 24 total players, including scout team members, and projected starters missed an eye-popping 50 games for the Bulldogs. Samuel will wear a cast for three months, before undergoing another surgery to remove surgical hardware. Samuel was Georgia’s third-leading rusher in 2008 behind Moreno (1,400 yards) and King (247 yards).
