2008 Oregon Ducks
Dec. 30
2008 Holiday Bowl
Oregon 42 … Oklahoma State 31
Oklahoma State controlled the first half, taking a 17-7 lead into the locker
room highlighted by a 33-yard Dez Bryant touchdown catch, but Oregon came out of
the second half roaring with a big kickoff return leading to the first of three
Jeremiah Masoli touchdown runs. The Duck quarterback blasted over OSU defenders
on his way to a 41-yard touchdown run a few minutes later, and the shootout was
on. OSU was able to keep pace with the second short Kendall Hunter touchdown run
and a one-yard Zac Robinson scoring run, and then the Duck running game took
over with LaGarrett Blount ending the fun with a 29-yard touchdown run with just
over three minutes to play. The Ducks ran for 307 yards with Jeremiah Johnson
getting 76 of them on a first quarter touchdown run. Both Robinson and Bryant
were hurt and tried to play through their injuries.
Player of the Game:
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli completed 18-of-32 passes
for 258 yards and a touchdown with an interception, and he ran 16 times for 106
yards and three touchdowns. In a losing cause, Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant
caught 13 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Oregon 65 … Oregon
State 38
Oregon obliterated the Beavers with 694 yards of total offense and with 37 first
half points to all but ruin OSU’s Rose Bowl hopes. Jeremiah Masoli threw three
touchdown passes and ran for a 14-yard score, while the defense helped out with
two interception returns for touchdowns as Walter Thurmond took one back 40
yards in the second and Spencer Paysinger returned a pass 70 yards for a score
in the fourth. Oregon State, without star RB Jacquizz Rodgers, came up with some
offense of its own as Lyle Moevao threw five touchdown passes with two to Shane
Morales, but the defense couldn’t stop the Duck big played. Jeremiah Johnson ran
for an 83-yard score in the second and Terence Scott took a pass 76 yards for a
touchdown in the fourth.
Player of the game:
Oregon RB Jeremiah Johnson ran 17 times for 219 yards
and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: Oregon State - Passing: Lyle Moevao, 27-51,
374 yds, 5 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: James Rodgers, 7-56. Receiving: Sammie Stroughter, 7-145
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 11-17, 274 yds, 3 TD
Rushing: Jeremiah Johnson, 17-219, 1 TD. Receiving: Jeffrey Maehl,
5-79, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon did
everything big against Oregon State with big play after big play, a near-perfect
day from Jeremiah Masoli, and even some big mistakes with 15 penalties for 129
yards. While Oregon State had all the pressure in the
world on its shoulders, Oregon played loose and effective showing tremendous
team speed and the potential to build on going into the bowl season and next
year. This might be the game that propels the program into a monster 2009.
Nov. 15
Oregon 55 …
Arizona 45
In a wild shootout with 1,031 yards of total offense, and 626 of it
coming on the ground, Oregon got out to a 48-17 lead helped by two
touchdown passes from Jeremiah Masoli, who also ran for scores from
66, 5 and 6 yards out. Patrick Chung returned a Willie Tuitama pass
31 yards for a Duck TD, Terence Scott caught a 44-yard touchdown
pass, and Jeffrey Maehl took a pass 65 yards for a touchdown as
Oregon appeared to be cruising to an easy win. And then Arizona made
things interesting scoring 28 straight points, helped by three Keola
Antolin touchdown runs, to pull within three, but LeGarrette Blount
was finally able to put it was for the Duke with a 40-yard scoring
dash. Arizona held on to the ball for 41:46.
Player of the game:
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli competed
21-of-26 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 10
times for 89 yards and three touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Arizona - Passing: Willie Tuitama,
29-45, 328 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Keola Antolin, 20-87, 4 TD. Receiving: Rob
Gronkowski, 12-143, 1 TD
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 21-26, 298
yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Jeremiah Masoli, 10-89, 3 TD. Receiving: Ed
Dickson, 7-84
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon
appeared to have found something in Jerermiah Masoli, who showed
against Arizona that he really might be the type of playmaker to
carry the team into the future. He did a little of everything right
except for closing out the game. Everything worked for the Duck
offense in the first half, but even so, there’s no reason to not be
giving LeGarrette Blount the ball more. He manages to come up with
the really big play every other time he touches the ball. Now the
team gets two weeks off before the Civil War showdown against Oregon
State, and if the Beavers can beat Arizona, the battle in Corvallis
will be, for Oregon, a chance to be the spoiler. A ten-win season is
still on the radar needing to beat OSU and to win the bowl game.
Nov. 8
Oregon 35 …
Stanford 28
LeGarrette Blount powered his way in for a three-yard touchdown run
with six seconds to play to get by Stanford and avoid the upset. The
Ducks were down one when they went on the final march, helped by a
25-yard scramble from Jeremiah Masoli, and closed it out with the
run and a two-point conversion. Blount tore off a 38-yard run in the
third quarter for a 27-20 Duck lead, but Stanford got a safety and a
three-yard Anthony Kimble touchdown run for a late lead. In the
rain, Oregon turned it over four times, Stanford once.
Player of the game:
Oregon RB Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette
Blount combined for 225 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries
Stat Leaders: Stanford - Passing: Tavita
Pritchard, 15-22, 138 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Anthony Kimble, 24-106, 1 TD. Receiving:
Delano Howell, 4-29,
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 11-21, 144
yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Jeremiah Johnson, 15-135, 1 TD. Receiving:
Jeremiah Johnson, 3-43
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon
should have a big advantage playing in the rain, it should be used
to it, but it seems to struggle in poor weather. No matter, the
Ducks overcame the four turnovers against Stanford
and came through clutch when needed. Jeremiah Masoli might not have
done too much through the air, but he kept things moving with his
legs when he had to late. The Ducks aren’t going to win the Pac 10,
but they’re still alive for the No. 2 slot and the Holiday Bowl.
First they have to beat Arizona and Oregon State, and they’re going
to have to show more of a passing game to win those two.
Nov. 1
California
26 … Oregon 16
A slew of Oregon mistakes on a rain-soaked field, highlighted by a
muffed punt that led to a two-yard Shane Vereen touchdown run in the
fourth quarter, kept Cal in control of its own Pac 10 destiny. In
the storm, Cal lost five turnovers with four tumbles, but were able
to crank out 348 yards of total offense with Kevin Riley, throwing a
22-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Ross and Nate Longshore, who filled
in for an injured Riley, hitting Nyan Boateng for a two-yard score.
The Ducks pulled within three late in the third on a 17-yard
Jeremiah Johnson run, but mistakes prevented them from getting any
closer.
Player of the game:
California DB Michael Mohamed made 14
tackles
Stat Leaders: Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli,
7-21, 44 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Jeremiah Johnson, 20-117, 1 TD. Receiving:
Terence Scott, 3-35
California - Passing: Nate Longshore, 13-27,
136 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Jahvid Best, 16-93. Receiving: Verran Tucker,
6-83
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon
couldn’t seem to handle the lousy weather conditions against Cal.
There were too many slips, too many mistakes, and no passing game
whatsoever when the Bears were able to slow down the running game.
Jeremy Masoli was bad throwing the ball, but Justin Roper was worse.
Now that the Pac 10 title is out of reach, it’s about trying to
secure the No. 3 spot, or maybe even the two, by winning out. There
can’t be a let down against Stanford.
Oct. 25
Oregon 54 …
Arizona State 20
Oregon
ripped up Arizona State with 304 rushing yards, including 140 in the
first quarter, as Jeremiah Johnson ran for a 43-yard score less than
three minutes in, while Jeremiah Masoli ran for a three-yard score
late in the first quarter. Johnson finished with two touchdown runs
while LeGarrette Blount scored from 10 and 19 yards out on the way
to a 37-6 lead early in the third quarter. Arizona State got a few
touchdown passes, including a 15-yarder from Rudy Carpenter to
Michael Jones, but Oregon kept on rolling as Masoli connected with
Terence Scott for a 27-yard score late in the third and Chris Harper
took a Justin Roper pass 62 yards for a touchdown in the fourth.
Oregon outgained ASU 537 yards to 333.
Player of the game:
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli completed
17-of-26 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown with an interception,
and he ran eight times for 85 yards and a score.
Stat Leaders: Arizona State - Passing: Rudy
Carpenter, 17-33, 146 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Ryan Bass, 10-56. Receiving: Nate Kimbrough,
4-66
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 17-26, 147
yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Jeremiah Masoli, 8-85, 1 TD. Receiving: Chris
Harper, 5-85, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... The
running game is making up for the potential problems with the
passing game. The offensive line crushed Arizona State and owned the
game from the start. The Sun Devils were never in it. The coaching
staff held out on the starting quarterback situation until the last
second with Jeremiah Masoli getting the nod over Justin Roper, and
while the passing game didn’t roll, Masoli ran well. Still tied for
the Pac 10 lead, the Ducks can make a major statement if they can
beat California next week. The Rose Bowl is still a possibility with
a few breaks.
Oct. 11
Oregon 31 …
UCLA 24
Jeremiah Masoli struggled to get the passing game going, but he made
up for it with his legs running for 170 yards and a five-yard
touchdown. Masoli completed just 5-of-19 passes, but one of them was
a 24-yard touchdown throw to Chris Harper for a 14-0 halftime lead.
UCLA stayed in the game with short third quarter touchdown runs from
Derrick Coleman and Kahlil Bell, but LeGarrette Blount kept the
Ducks ahead with a six-yard touchdown run and a brilliant, bruising
69-yard scoring dash with just over two minutes to play. UCLA WR
Terrence Austin suffered a scary-looking injury when his head hit
the turf, and he was immobilized and taken off the field on a cart,
but he had movement and should make a full recovery.
Player of the game:
Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli completed
5-of-19 passes for 42 yards and a touchdown, and he ran 24 times for
170 yards and a score
Stat Leaders: UCLA - Passing: Kevin Craft,
27-43, 288 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Kahlil Bell, 14-32, 1 TD. Receiving: Ryan
Moya, 6-63
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 5-19, 42 yds,
1 TD
Rushing: Jeremiah Masoli, 24-170, 1 TD. Receiving:
Chris Harper, 2-25, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Thanks
to all the quarterback issues, Oregon is going to be hit-or-miss
offensively. Jeremiah Masoli struggled way too much throwing against
UCLA, and while his running was able to save the day, he’ll need to
be far more efficient. The secondary continues to be a major
problem, and it’ll likely continue to be an issue with ASU and Cal
ahead. The running game that leads the Pac 10 has to keep on
rolling. LeGarrette Blount has the potential to be a special runner.
He makes big things happen.
Oct. 4
USC 44 … Oregon 10
Oregon scored first on a one-yard Jeremiah Johnson run, and took a
10-3 lead midway though the second quarter on a 24-yard Matt Evenson
field goal. And then all thoughts of Oregon State Part 2 quickly
faded as Mark Sanchez kicked off a run of 41 unanswered points with
a 34-yard strike to Damian Williams. A 63-yard bomb to Ronald
Johnson gave the Trojans the lead for good, and then a 10-point run
in the final 40 seconds, with Sanchez hitting Patrick Turner for an
11-yard touchdown with 16 seconds to play to capitalize off an
Oregon fumble. The Trojans finished with 598 yards of total offense
including 443 yards passing, helped by 111 from backup Mitch Mustain.
Player of the game: USC QB Mark Sanchez completed 19-of-28
passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli,
18-29, 156 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Jeremiah Johnson, 13-45, 1 TD. Receiving:
Terence Scott, 5-46
USC - Passing: Mark Sanchez, 19-28, 332, yds, 3 TD
Rushing: C.J. Gable, 10-49. Receiving: Joe McKnight, 5-86
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean,
Basil? ... The secondary is an issue. Fine, so USC’s
passing game is going to get moving from time to time, but the Duck
defensive backs allowed way too many big plays and made it too easy
for Mark Sanchez. After getting ripped up by Boise State and USC in
losses, the Ducks have to use the UCLA game next week to stiffen up
before dealing with Arizona State and Cal on the road. Jeremy Masoli
was fine, but he didn’t get his usual help from the running game.
LeGarrette Blount ran for no yards on nine carries.
Sept. 27
Oregon 63 … Washington State 14
LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Johnson each ran for three touchdowns
and Walter Thurmond came up with two interceptions as Oregon won in
a laugher. Down 21-0, Washington State got a nine-yard touchdown
catch from Jeshua Anderson midway through the second quarter, but
Johnson ran for a ten-yard score and Blount ran for a three-yard
touchdown to end the first half and as part of a 42-point run. The
Ducks outgained Wazzu 346 yards to 79 on the ground.
Player of the game: Oregon RBs LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah
Johnson combined to run 25 times for 187 yards and six touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Washington State - Passing:
Marshall Lobbestael, 22-41, 192 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Logwone Mitz, 6-59. Receiving: Brandon Gibson,
10-103
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 9-16, 161 yds,
2 TD
Rushing: LeGarrette Blount, 15-98, 3 TD. Receiving:
Jaison Williams, 4-102, 2 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon’s
running game is in high gear as LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah
Johnson are combining forced to stomp over everyone. Washington
State didn’t have a prayer of slowing down anything the Duck offense
wanted to do, while the Oregon defense dominated up front. There
were 11 penalties, but that’s nitpicking in a near-perfect game.
Considering the problems against the Boise State passing game,
Oregon tightened up the pass defense. Now it has to be better at
USC.
Sept. 20
Boise State 37 … Oregon 32
Boise State exploded with a 24-point second quarter with Kellen
Moore throwing for two short scores and Ian Johnson running for a
six-yard touchdown. Oregon tried to answer on the first drive of the
second half with an 18-yard Jeremiah Johnson scoring run, but the
Broncos answered with a 73-yard Vinny Perretta touchdown catch and
two of Kyle Brotzman’s three field goals for a 37-13 lead. Oregon
lost quarterback Jeremy Masoli to a concussion, and freshman Darron
Thomas came in to throw three fourth quarter touchdown passes with
two to Ed Dickson to pull within five with less than two minutes to
play, but the Broncos recovered the onside kick.
Player of the game: Boise State QB Kellen Moore threw for 386
yards, three touchdowns, and an interception on 24-of-36 passing.
Stat Leaders: Boise State - Passing: Kellen Moore,
24-36, 386 yds, 3 TDs, 1 INT
Rushing: Ian Johnson, 19-40, 1 TD. Receiving:
Jeremy Childs, 4-100
Oregon - Passing: Darron Thomas, 13-25, 210 yds, 3
TDs, 1 INT
Rushing: LeGarrette Blount, 18-99, 1 TD. Receiving:
Ed Dickson, 7-103, 2 TDs
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Much will be made
about the Oregon quarterback situation and how the injuries were the
reason for the loss to Boise State, but the quarterbacks don’t play
defense. Boise State came up with too many big plays through the air
against the Oregon secondary, and while the Duck D line was great
against the run, it didn’t generate its expected pass rush. The Duck
running game was fine, with LeGarrette Blount and Jeremiah Johnson
running well, and while Chris Harper was awful when he got his
chance under center, Darron Thomas became a playmaker in the fourth
quarter.
Sept. 13
Oregon 32 ... Purdue 26
2OT
Oregon got a three-yard touchdown run from LeGarrette Blount in the
second overtime to finish off the comeback. Purdue jumped out to a
20-3 lead helped by Kory Sheets touchdown runs from 80 and two
yards, and had a chance to win in regulation but Chris Summers badly
missed a 44-yard field goal. The Ducks roared back in the second
half with an
87-yard Jairus Byrd punt return for a score and a five-yard Blount
touchdown run, but they could only manage a 38-yard Matt Evenson
field goal in the fourth quarter to tie it at 23. Summers hit a
22-yarder in the first overtime but missed a 47-yarder in the
second.
Player of the game:
Oregon RB
LeGarrette Blount ran 12 times for
132 yards and two touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Purdue - Passing: Curtis Painter, 26-50, 207
yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Kory Sheets, 29-180, 2 TD. Receiving: Greg Orton, 9-82
Oregon - Passing: Justin Roper, 20-48, 197 yds, 2 INT
Rushing:
LeGarrette Blount,
12-132, 2 TD. Receiving: Ed Dickson, 7-93
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... Oregon showed heart
and toughness being able to come back to beat Purdue. It wasn't the
prettiest performance, and it took a while for the offense to show
up, but LeGarrette Blount did what he needed to do both short and
with a 72-yard dash. Defensively, Nick Reed had a whale of a game
with two sacks and several pressures. The big issue going forward
will be at quarterback with Justin Roper leaving late with a knee
injury.
Sept. 6
Oregon
66 ... Utah State
24
Oregon set a school-record with 688 yards of total offense and six
different Ducks ran for a touchdown in the blowout. Oregon got up to
a 21-0 lead before Utah State got on the board with a 15-yard Curtis
Marsh touchdown catch, and then
LeGarrette Blount answered with his
second touchdown run of the first half. Oregon finished with 408
yards on the ground and averaged 7.7 yards per carry. Oregon hung up
24 points in the second and 21 in the second.
Player of the game:
Oregon RB
LeGarrette Blount ran 18 times for
132 yards and two touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Utah State - Passing: Diondre Borel, 16-24,
157 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Diondre Borel, 11-31. Receiving: Otis Nelson, 7-72, 1 TD
Oregon - Passing: Justin Roper, 13-18, 173 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
LeGarrette Blount,
18-132, 2 TD. Receiving: Ed Dickson, 6-70
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... The offense is
humming on high gear. Now the win over Washington looks better,
considering how easy it was and with the Huskies' performance
against BYU, and 688 yards, even on Utah State, is still impressive.
Justin Roper appeared to be more than fine after suffering a
concussion last week, while
LeGarrette Blount had a fantastic
game running the ball. This team is loaded with weapons.
Aug. 30
Oregon 44 ... Washington
10
Oregon started off the scoring with a four-yard Jeremiah Johnson run
and a 60-yard Terence Scott touchdown catch, but Washington rallied
to pull within four going into halftime on a one-yard Paul Homer
touchdown run. The second half, particularly the fourth quarter, was
all Oregon. Starting quarterback Justin Roper was knocked out with a
concussion, but Jeremiah Masoli came in and his Jaison Williams for
a 48-yard touchdown and Jeffrey Maehl from 25 yards out to put it
away. Johnson added a 13-yard scoring dash in the third quarter.
Oregon outgained UW 496 yards to 242.
Player of the game:
Oregon RB Jeremiah Johnson ran 15 times
for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a pass for 13 yards
Stat Leaders: Washington - Passing: Jake Locker, 12-28, 103
yds
Rushing: Jake Locker, 16-57. Receiving: D'Andre Goodwin, 8-67
Oregon - Passing: Jeremiah Masoli, 9-17, 126
yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Jeremiah Johnson, 15-124, 2 TD. Receiving: Terence Scott,
6-117, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean, Basil? ... And the quarterback
problems continue. With Nate Costa already lost for the year with a
knee injury, it didn't help to get Justin Roper knocked out against
Washington with an apparent concussion. Jeremiah Masoli was strong
in relief, and he should be fine if he's the main man against Utah
State, but the Ducks can't afford any more QB problems. The running
game was a plus cranking out 256 yards against the Huskies. Jeremiah
Johnson was fantastic as the new No. 1 back.

Recap:
Not a whole lot went according to the script for the Ducks in 2007.
Not the blazing start or the bowl upset, and certainly not the
devastating knee injury to QB Dennis Dixon that transformed Oregon
from a national championship contender to a rudderless ship at the
end of the regular season. When Dixon was healthy in September and
October, he was building an impressive Heisman resume, and the Duck
offense was a locomotive that could drop 50 points on any unprepared
defense. Seemingly on a collision course with New Orleans or
Pasadena, Oregon never recovered from the loss of its superstar,
losing the final three league games to earn a consolation Sun Bowl
berth.
Offensive Player of the Year: QB Dennis Dixon
Defensive Player of the Year: DE Nick Reed
Biggest Surprise: Blasting South Florida in the Sun Bowl with
first-time starting QB Justin Roper at the controls. Given up for
dead weeks ago, the Ducks shredded a very good Bull defense for 56
points and 533 yards, getting four touchdown passes from Roper and
253 yards rushing and a pair of scores from Jonathan Stewart.
Biggest Disappointment: Dixon’s ACL tear against Arizona
State and hastening of the injury a week later at Arizona will haunt
Duck fans for years. So, too, will the Sept. 29 loss to Cal, in
which WR Cameron Colvin fumbled through the end zone reaching for
the game-tying score with just seconds left in regulation.
Looking Ahead: Is Roper a long-term solution at quarterback,
or just a one-game wonder that’ll go down in Oregon lore? The answer
to that question will go a long way to determining the 2008 fate of
a program that loses Dixon and probably Stewart to the NFL.
