2009 Off-Season Roundup
The News Stories You Need To Know ... March 2
By
Phil Guidry
* The world has been clamoring for these two to join forces, and
it may soon be happening: Kurt Warner spoke to Tim Tebow on the
phone a few days ago. Warner said, "I wanted to touch base with him,
I was talking to him about a charity event I was doing, wanted to
touch base and hope we can build a relationship moving forward." We
can only hope. Maybe the Apocalypse isn't upon us, after all.
* Nebraska and Arkansas are similar programs in many ways:
tradition-rich former powers trying to claw back to national
relevance in cutthroat conferences... and now, both are dealing with
alcohol-related issues off the field. Cornhusker tight end Ben
Cotton was cited for alcohol possession after an argument at a
campus residence hall, while the Hogs' Ryan Mallett (the Michigan
transfer who is the likely starter at QB next season) was booked on
a public intoxication charge outside a campus-area nightspot. But
they're not the only ones showing up on the News Roundup police
blotter because...
* A pair of Ohio State offensive linemen, Mike Adams and J.B.
Shugarts, have been cited for possessing drug paraphernalia. Cue the
journalists who drank and smoked their way through their undergrad
days raking Cotton, Mallett and the Buckeyes over the coals for
being irresponsible, and cue the fans not bothering to care as long
as those guys can still play.
* Best wishes to the family of Oklahoma wideout Corey Wilson, who
was critically injured in a rollover collision over the weekend.
Stories like that truly put college football and all its silliness
into proper perspective.
180 days and counting...
