2009 Off-Season Roundup
The News Stories You Need To Know ... March 3

* Michael Crabtree may have been a part of the most
scintillating play of the 2008 college football season, but he won't
be scintillating anyone with his 40-yard dash time. The former Texas
Tech receiver will skip the dash to have a screw surgically inserted
into his left foot to repair a stress fracture. That's not to be
confused with the screw he surgically inserted into Texas' national
championship hopes.
* One team that has national championship hopes heading into the
upcoming season is LSU. What they don't have, apparently, is a
starting quarterback. Les Miles said that while Jordan Jefferson -
the MVP of LSU's bowl win over Georgia Tech - is the favorite at
this point, nothing is certain: "The start and finish - where you
start spring, it's like being ahead at halftime. I think Jordan made
a heck of a point with how he finished the season, and he should be
a strong consideration for the quarterback spot." Not that The Hat
has ever been known to play mind games with the media or anything.
* A new trend in the sport's upper echelon is forking over big
money for assistant coaches, but The Ohio State is not getting
suckered into that game. Athletic director Gene Smith said the
school will not follow in the footsteps of Tennessee: "We're just
not going there... For one thing, I think it's not right. And two,
financially it's not being responsible with the dollars that our
fans provide us." Yes, folks, we are truly entering a dark and
sinister new world: fiscal responsibility has come to big-time
college football. Batten down the hatches.
