2009 Off-Season Roundup
The News Stories You Need To Know ... March 4
By

* Auburn's offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is ready to make
fans on The Plains forget all about last year's Tony Franklin
experiment. And he's going to do it by picking up the pace: "You
hear a lot about no huddle and a lot about 'fast,' but our goal is
to play fast. That's who we are. That's what we do. We're not so
much a no-huddle, look-to-the-side team. I like to think we're a
little bit different than everyone else." Just so we're clear:
Auburn is going to play fast. You know, fast like the speed at which
some Auburn fans turned against Gene Chizik.
* One team that definitely plays fast - well, except for in BCS
title games - is Oklahoma. But those who expect the high-octane
offense to resume shattering records this season should take note:
the Sooners lose four starters from the offensive line, including a
two-time All-American and a trio of all-conference standouts. If the
rebuilt line can't play up to last year's near-invincible wall, we
may not be treated to another Billy Sims "Boomer" barrage at the
Heisman ceremony.
* Wake Forest has suffered a loss of its own: backup quarterback
Brett Hodges has quit the team. But it's not for the usual troubled
reasons: he's going to concentrate on internships and education. How
are the Demon Deacons supposed to consistently compete at the
highest level until they get their priorities straight?
* A positive update on the Corey Wilson front: the
Oklahoma wide receiver's condition has been upgraded from
critical to serious following last week's traffic accident.
