The News Stories You Need To Know ... March 6

* You may have heard about the Mountain West Conference's new
proposal for an eight-team college football playoff (cue the
naysayers claiming it'll never happen, even as Wall Street implodes
and researchers clone previously extinct animals). Tom Buchanan,
chairman of the conference's board of directors, said, "I will put
this as bluntly as I can. We all believe that change is needed. The
current system is not fair and somebody needs to stand up and say
that and ask for dialogue amongst all the parties involved." Tom, I
will put this as bluntly as I can: the next time the BCS apologists
care about what's fair will be the first time. Good try, though.
* Not content with ruling all college sporting matters on earth,
the University of Florida wants a jump-start on the afterlife, too.
The school wants to establish a cemetary on its Gainesville campus
for its most diehard fans, and it's working with state lawmakers in
an attempt to set aside space for a Gator graveyard. In case you
ever wondered if SEC football was a matter of life and death, now
you have your answer.
* Georgia coach Mark Richt says he has a secret weapon when it
comes to recruiting: "I put a lot of things to prayer, and this is
one thing I put to prayer. I ask the Lord to 'Give us the guys that
belong at Georgia. The ones that don't belong, work it out.' This
explains why all that first round NFL talent continues to flock to a
school that hasn't won a national title since 1980: they have the
Greatest Recruiter Ever on their side.
* See if you can guess who OU coach Bob Stoops is talking about
here: "They've been very inconsistent that way in how they work and
their toughness and discipline." The Sooner coaching staff in BCS
games? No, he's talking about that young offensive line of his.
