A brief snapshot on what's going on this off-season in the nations' best football conference.
Vols WR Released From Hospital
Tennessee WR Ahmad Paige was released from the hospital late Friday night, and is expected to make a full recovery, after suffering a scary neck injury after colliding with a brick wall at Neyland Stadium earlier in the day.
Paige was attempting to haul in a deep pass from Vols QB Jonathan Crompton when he collided with the wall in the left corner of the end zone, silencing the estimated 2,000 fans that were in attendance for the first practice in full pads under new Vols head coach Lane Kiffin. Paige was immobilized and taken to UT Hospital for precautionary tests, which were returned normal.
Gators Lose Sophomore DT
The University of Florida has confirmed that sophomore defensive tackle Torrey Davis, who made two key tackles in a goal-line stand late in the second quarter of the BCS National Championship Game against Oklahoma, has left the Florida Gators.
The reason for Davis' decision to leave the football team has not yet been released. Davis has run into some problems in the past, including citations for driving with knowledge of a suspended license and illegal possession of alcohol.
There were rumors late on Thursday that Davis may be allowed back on the team in the fall, but confirmation of Davis' departure has been made by the school.
Davis made two clutch tackles on Oklahoma RB Chris Brown on back-to-back plays on the goal-line in the second quarter of the BCS National Championship Game while the score was tied 7-7. The plays gave the Gators the momentum in the game; as they went on to beat the Sooners 24-14, earning their second national championship in the last three years.
Davis made 15 tackles in two seasons with the Gators.
Saban Suspends Two Linebackers
Alabama started spring practice without linebackers Brandon Fanney and Prince Hall, who have been suspended by head coach Nick Saban for rules violations.
Fanney, who is projected to start for the Crimson Tide at OLB, was the team's third-leading tackler in 2008 and was second on the team with nine tackles for a loss. Saban said that he doesn't know when Fanney will return, but that he will be back at some point.
Hall's situation may be a little more serious. He's been suspended by Saban three times during his Tide career, including in the spring last year and the first two games of the 2008 season. Saban terms Halls' suspension this go around as "indefinitely."
