The Spring Games So Far ...
Army
April 10 – The Black team used the new Rich Ellerson offense to a 20-0
win over a Gold team that used a variety of formations. Chip Bowden had
a strong game for the Black completing 7-of-10 passes for 58 yards and
ran for 90 yards on six carries highlighted by a 75-yard dash. Also
getting his reps to show what he could do was Max Jenkins, who ran for
39 yards and a score but only completed 2-of-8 passes for 49 yards and a
score. Carson Williams, the much-heralded recruit of a few years ago,
struggled for the Gold team completing 6-of-16 passes for 33 yards and
two picks, but he ran for 47 yards.
Navy
April 17 – QB Ricky
Dobbs only got two series to work, leaving with a sprained ankle, and he
was able to make them count leading the way to two Jon Teague field
goals from 42 and 22 yards out in the Gold’s 19-0 win over the Blue. The
Blue team got 42 yards from quarterback Mike Stukel, but it was LB Craig
Schaefer who had the best game making eight tackles with a tackle for
loss. While the running game worked for the Gold team, Dobbs only
completed one of his four passes for 11 yards, while Kriss Proctor
completed three of his four passes for 22 yards. The Blue quarterbacks,
Mike Stukel and Greg Zingler, combined to compete two of seven passes
for 23 yards and an interception.
Notre Dame
April 18 – The
Blue team, the offense, beat the Gold 68-33, and while the playbook
wasn’t opened up on either side of the ball, some questions were
answered. There isn’t any semblance of a quarterback derby going into
fall camp even though Jimmy Clausen completed 8-of-17 passes for 70
yards and a pick-six interception to Robert Blanton, but Dayne Crist
struggled completing just 4-of-10 passes for 40 yards. The play-calling
was relatively vanilla, but the running game was effective. Robert
Hughes led all rushers with 21 carries for 93 yards and two touchdowns
from eight and two yards out, while Jonas Gray ran 20 times for 89 yards
and a score. Nate Montana, Joe’s son, connected on both his passes for
54 yards including a 34-yarder to Mike Ragone. Harrison Smith and Ethan
Johnson each came up with two sacks.
