The News Stories You Need To Know ... April 17
By

* A diehard Florida fan survived several years
of captivity in a Colombian jungle because the Gators' multiple
national titles lifted his spirits. Keith Stansell said that even as
he was held captive with chains and guns, the Colombian rebels asked
him why American football was so violent and barbaric. To that we
can only say... rebels, you guys sure don't understand the SEC.
* Bobby Bowden has written a letter recommending former adversary
Gino Torretta for the College Football Hall of Fame. He said, "If it
wasn't for Gino Torretta, there would never have been a 'wide
right.'" Don't underestimate how classy and difficult a move that
was for Bowden: a 'Nole supporting a 'Cane ranks right up there with
being imprisoned in the jungle by Colombian rebels.
* Oklahoma All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham was arrested on
a warrant issued over his failure to pay a seatbelt citation.
Compared to a Sooner recruit allegedly threatening to kill his
girlfriend with a screwdriver a few weeks ago, this is almost good
news.
