The News Stories You Need To Know ... May 7

* How much influence does the winningest coach in the
history of college football's major division carry? Not much,
apparently. After Joe Paterno lobbied for the Big Ten to expand to 12
teams, commish Jim Delany said that there are no plans to expand and
make Joe Pa happy. They're apparently content with going into
hibernation as the SEC and Big 12 steal the national spotlight in
December, and no amount of lobbying from cocky young upstarts like Joe
Pa will change that.
* Vandal scandal: Idaho defensive coordinator Mark
Criner was charged with a DUI early Monday.
* Alabama's Julio Jones, the team's leading receiver
as a freshman last season, has undergone sports hernia surgery. He is
expected to be back for fall camp, when he can resume giving opposing
defensive coordinators migraines.
* Every week, there's a new story about how the spread
of the spread offense is creating a dearth of pro-ready quarterback
prospects. Yes, there's a spread of 'the spread of the spread' stories.
