GAME OF THE WEEK

BYU 14 … Oklahoma 13
Max Hall connected with McKay Jacobson for a seven-yard score with 3:03 to play leading the way to a one-point lead, but OU had one last shot. Tress Way’s 54-yard field goal attempt fell short and wide, and BYU had the shocking upset. Sam Bradford was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury, and backup Landry Jones couldn’t get the offense moving as Jimmy Stevens connected on field goals from 35 and 22 yards out after BYU tied it at seven on an Andrew George five-yard touchdown grab. OU started off the scoring on an eight-yard Ryan Broyles catch from Bradford. The two teams combined for 22 penalties.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert completed 25-of-33 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 39 yards and a score.

CONFENCE ROUNDUP

Baylor … Baylor 24 ... at Wake Forest 21 ... Baylor committed too many penalties and let Wake Forest back in the game late, but to go on the road and come up with a nice win over a bowl team shows just how far the program has come. The Bears aren't going to power over anyone, but they showed excellent speed on both sides of the ball, and outside of a fumble and the penalties, they didn't make a slew of big mistakes. Robert Griffin was sharp early, but he didn't get his running game going nearly as well as he needs to, but that's nitpicking. With home games against Connecticut, Northwestern State, and Kent State ahead, a 4-0 start is now within reach.

Colorado … Colorado State 23 ... at Colorado 17 ... Where's the offense? That Colorado didn't get blown away by CSU was a shocker considering the Buff O line was destroyed, there was no running game, and Cody Hawkins didn't appear to make any strides from last year. 29 yards of rushing is an embarrassment considering the talent at running back, and after an offseason of excitement about last year's super-recruit, RB Darrell Scott, there was only one carry for one yard. Dan Hawkins had better have some tricks up his sleeve, or this might be the beginning of the end.

Iowa State …  at Iowa State 34 ... North Dakota State 17 ...  It might just have been a win over North Dakota State, but Paul Rhoads has already won a third of what Gene Chizik was able to come up with during his time in Ames. The defense might not have been a rock against the run, and that’s going to be a major problem against Iowa next week, but Jesse Smith got in on everything with a 15 tackle game with a key forced fumble. Grant Mahoney showed that he’s going to be a major weapon with his 50-yard field goal and his miss coming from 57 yards away, but the excitement has to be over the way Austen Arnaud played showing a good command and a nice connection with Marquis Hamilton that has to continue to keep up with the high octane attacks in Big 12 play.

Kansas … at Kansas 49 ... Colorado State 3 ... It was a true warm-up game but the Jayhawks were in midseason form. Todd Reesing was sharp and showed off his mobility to go along with his passing arm, while the defense never let Northern Colorado into the game. Jake Sharp further cemented himself as the team's top back with a strong game, while Toben Opurum looked quick and good in mop-up time. Now comes a step up in play against UTEP, but it's not a big jump. It'll be important to get the backups as much work as possible, and they'll get their chance against the mediocre Miners.

Kansas State … at Kansas State 21 ... Massachusetts 17 ... The running game came up with 225 yards and there was pop to the passing game, but mistakes and inefficiency let UMass get back in the game and made it a lot closer than it should've been. There will be another chance to tune up with Louisiana-Lafayette coming up next, but QB Carson Coffman has to be a bit more effective. He hit on enough big plays, but he barley completed more than half of his passes and he didn't keep the chains moving until the final drive that closed out the game. Bill Snyder has a lot of work to do, but there are signs that this might not be a disaster of a season. There's good speed and just enough athleticism on defense to get by against the average offenses.

Missouri … Missouri 37 ... Illinois 9 ... Any more questions about whether or not Missouri could reload? The running game didn’t do as much as it should’ve, Derrick Washington was held in check, but Blaine Gabbert has the makings of a superstar with a mature presence, a nice, live arm, and the mobility to make linebackers respect the run. This wasn’t just a blowout, this was a statement that this underappreciated team is going to come out roaring. Now it has to show some consistency, while the defense has to continue to be as tough against the pass as it was against the loaded Illini receiving corps.

Nebraska … at Nebraska 49 ... Florida Atlantic 3 ... Zac Lee might not have been perfect in his debut, but he was solid enough to keep the Florida Atlantic defense from teeing off on the ground game. Once the offensive line got into a lather, Roy Helu and the ground game got rolling and the game was over. It doesn't matter that it was just against FAU; averaging 8.1 yards per carry is impressive. With Arkansas State up next, the Huskers have to work a bit more on the passing game and make it a little bit crisper before dealing with Virginia Tech.

Oklahoma … BYU 14 ... Oklahoma 13 ... Oklahoma wasn’t just without All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham, but it completely lost its fire after Sam Bradford’s shoulder got crunched. Even so, the defense came up with a good enough performance to get the win, even if the offense didn’t do anything once Bradford left. There were too many penalties, not enough pressure on Max Hall, even with four sacks, and the team held on to the ball for just 22:58. Basically, OU lost its stars, and the rest of the team didn’t pick up the slack.
 
Oklahoma State … at Oklahoma State 24 ... Georgia 10 ... Good teams are often able to win even with things aren’t going well. The running game was stuffed, Dez Bryant, two touchdown grabs and all, was thrown off his game by the physical Georgia defenders, and Zac Robinson had some awful stretches, but the defense was phenomenal, allowing just 257 yards. The D was popping, with the secondary coming up with big shot time and again, and Georgia was never able to get into a rhythm. Going forward, OSU has to cut down on the penalties, committing 15 for 106 yards, and it has to be a bit more patient on offense. If the defense is going to play like this, the O won’t have to crank out 50 points a game.

Texas … at Texas 59 ... ULM 20 ... 7 for -3. That might be one of the most important stats to come out of the easy layup of a win. Those are Colt McCoy’s rushing stats, and it shows how there’s going to be a de-emphasis on his running. The offense was able to stretch its legs a little bit and McCoy was solid, but the offensive line wasn’t consistent, even though it wasn’t bad. There was a nice overall balance, backup QB Garrett Graham got in some work, and the running game looked great, helped by the emergence of D.J. Monroe, who also looks like a potential star kick returner.

Texas A&M … at Texas A&M 41 ... New Mexico 6 ... This is how the Aggies were supposed to be by the end of last year. Jerrod Johnson, at least for one week, justified the coaching staff's pick of him as the No. 1, while the defense was more productive and aggressive than it was throughout last year. Christine Michael was terrific as the team's new star runner, averaging 8.5 yards per run showing off an impressive burst. If the offense can continue to be this explosive, and if Johnson can continue to spread it around and get big plays out of several targets, then this should be a hot start with Utah State and UAB to follow before facing Arkansas.

Texas Tech… at Texas Tech 38 ... North Dakota 13 ... It's going to take a little while before Taylor Potts is perfect, but he was good enough in his first shot as the main man. However, all head coach Mike Leach wants is steady play without too many mistakes, and Potts threw three picks. That was fine against North Dakota, but Potts will have to be sharper in next week's layup against Rice to be fully prepared for the showdown against Texas. The defense got decent defensive pressure in the backfield against the Fighting Sioux, but it has to be more consistent and will have to make more big plays.
